QUOTE(rawrkun @ May 28 2013, 09:10 PM)
Recently I got an offer from a consultant eng firm with a starting salary of SGD2800. Initially I though it was okay and I assume that  most company will have a standard pay for new hire... so I don't really bother to negotiate...

but... people told me that the salary is way below market rate for Singapore standard... and the rent there is freaking expensive sad.gif
Now I feel kinda stupid and feel that I'm being taken advantage of...

My academic qualification is fairly above average and I am currently attached with a MNC in Malaysia... but after 6 months I fell like I'm not really learning anything and I was bored... that's when I decided  to explore my options else where...

but now I'm having second thoughts about the offer but I feel obliged honor my agreement with the SG company...

Any advice for some one who is just starting out like me  icon_question.gif  icon_question.gif  icon_question.gif

If you are fresh, i'd say that salary is fairly decent. (1 year or less consider fresh for this argument ok?)
Consultants usually start low, so 2.8k is considered high for fresh consultants as the mentor will need to actually hold ur hand and guide u on how to do the design works.
when u have enuff experience, u will have the leverage to request for more.

geotech consultant... can't reveal anything more than that coz its a very small field...
Thank you so much for the info  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif

So a year and a half ago I will fall under the median category hmm.gif  hmm.gif  hmm.gif

Damn... should have nego properly before accepting the offer  sad.gif

Not sure whether I should just stick to my current job in MY or go for SG and try to negotiate after the probation period....
*
one thing u can do, provided u r really good....
ask for X amount (what u think u deserve), then take 2.8k for probation period
tell ur boss if u perform to expectation, after probation u r expecting X.

but u have to lay it out 1st what is expected of u...
a bit hard for freshie...since it's hard to set KPI then

Now too late to renegotiate the offer liao...  sad.gif  since my S Pass is already approved. Later will give a very bad impression to the employer...
Already asked HR about increment, but the personnel just said that it depends on my performance... but usually this is the HR way of saying that there's none...
Hope I'll get a good mentor, then at least it will be worthwhile and I am learning something.
Will use this pay as a motivation to work harder. Hopefully everything will turn out okay...
*
if that's the case, then u will just have to bear with it
learn as much as u can, knowledge is power....
with enough knowledge, money will come to you eventually...

I face the same situation with you before, mine even worse where they mentioned that there are increment after probation yet i did not get (before sign offer letter), i even asked my manager and he helped he ask HR, the reply is that is not company culture, vmad.gif
*
that's y all these things, said verbally must request to put them in black n white somewhere.
then u will have some proof to demand when the time comes.
else, that's the response you are gonna get

i face the same situation before, so i got them to confirm the increment stuff via email although it's not written in the offer letter
it is also stated that it's not a company policy, but they will review
fair enough, my company kept to their side of the bargain and gave me the requested increment

if you feel that the company has short changed you, it's best to leave early
if they can go back on their word on things like this, what makes you think they won't do anything worse?

all the thing i do it in black and white only the non company policy, but when come to the not company policy issue, they can easily say after review and feel that no necessary increment needed. so far, only the initial increment issue bugged me, the rest still ok.
*
if they say so, then it's your choice to stay or to leave
you have the option too

Hi guys, need your help.

I'm trying to reach an old colleague of mine - Rufin M. He should be working in the banking sector in Sg.

I saw his photo taken together with a bunch of LYNers in Sg. (photo taken late 2012 for a LYNers in Sg BBQ) hence this question posted here.

Thanks in advance.

What I mean here is I cant figure out why they are willing to spend 90 mins instead of going to the next door to have Western?

I seldom see this kind of scenario is KL. I wont waste this kind of time.
*
err...those that queue, are those that really want to eat at that particular shop and don't mind waiting.
for ppl like u (n me), just go to any other empty shop.
usually i go to hawker stallr or kopitiam, queue also 5 minutes or so.
lol!

Agreed with you.

This is one point I hate SG.

Imagine you wanted to buy today's papers at a 7-Eleven. You go round and round the car-park in a HDB for 15 mins to search for a parking lot (perhaps in the 5th floor in the car-park if you are really unfortunate that day).

Thereafter, you walk down and buy your papers which only takes you 10 secs and you walk-back to collect your car. Does it make sense to you?

In KL, no one really cares whether you park your car legally or illegally. Take your own sweet time to have a pack of nasi lemak while buy your favourite magazines at the 7-11.

Now, this is call human rights freedom.
*
I disagree with your statement.
I hate it when ppl block my car. I know it's not totally the driver's fault (the municipal council didn't provide enuff parking sometimes), but most of the time it's for the convenience of the driver.
imagine the trouble one have to go through when there's an emergency n there's another car blocking.
that's just being inconsiderate

I got a job offer in Sg with the offer 3k. Was it a lot or was it little? I have a offer from Sg and 2 from Msia. Which is better? The idea of leaving my KL life and work in SG is a bit depressing  But I wonder why so many people wanted to go Sg and work??
I have 5 yrs experience. If dollar to dollar vout conversion, obviously I got less.
I want to know from those who are already working in Sg, izzit really so much better working in Sg? (best if you stayed in KL before and working in Sg now)
*
if you can get 1:1 then it's best.
i worked in KL prior to moving here. Not much difference i would say. Travelling time, lesser for me.
Expenses, lower except for rental
workload & stress, no difference for me. Maybe not for other ppl

Hahahha..

I have rejected the Singapore offer biggrin.gif  rclxms.gif
I feel so relieved. One less option to consider. But I construct the e-mail with a very heavyheart.
Opportunity don't knock my the same door twice, if i give up the opportunity I got in M'sia, I might not get it again.
Same thing with Sg tho. But I do not want to compromise my happiness.

I am happy with my Swift so won't be changing.

Good for you. Move forward and don't regret.

Hi all,
This is my 1st post. Hope to get some suggestion I am Penang people (26 years old) who working for automation industry for 5 years already. Recently thinking to change job.

I get a offer from Singapore (SGD 3600) and a offer from Penang (RM 4000).

-Singapore-
Salary: SGD 3600 (No epf)
Rental : SGD 700
Transport and other expenses : SGD 1000
Left SGD 2000.

-Malaysia-
Salary : RM 4000(epf 13%), Total RM4520
Rental : RM 210
Transport and other expenses : RM 1000
Left RM 3310.

After compared, Savins in SG minus savings in Malaysia. The differences is around RM 1500. I love staying in Malaysia. BUt the extra income that can earn from SG is kinda attractive too.
Both is waiting for me to sign my offer letter. I have a very hard to struggle where to choose.
Hope I can get some opinion/suggestion here...

One point is, I will definately come back if I'm working in SG.
*
I send back about 60% of my salary at the moment.
if u dun have commitment in Malaysia, then coming over to SG is the right choice. Plus, u r only 26...

QUOTE(NoiZy @ Jun 12 2013, 03:13 PM)
Yes, I do understand this. But when probing on tax, what I want to know is just the tax that is enforced unto the employer, I just need to know that the salary offered is really the salary given, don't want SGD 3000 offered, but end of the day, they say SGD700 paid for tax etc.
The reason why I want to clear this is after checking with some friends over there, they say they have seen similar cases and adviced me to be sure that I won't end up in that situation. Proper management will tell that the salary is SGD2300, and not SGD3000.
*
If ur salary is 3k, the tax won't be as high as 700
plus, SG tax u the following year
so ur salary will still be 3k
the following year, u can choose to pay lump sum or installment

Yes, I know my personal tax won't be that high.

Because this is what I've learnt from my friends in SG, one of them was actually in this situation before, and due to contract, can't resign within 2 years. There is a tax/fees that the employer is charged, but they include it into your total salary, so they can say they are offering SGD3000 instead of SGD2300. My friend's case and some of their friends faced these issue. I just want to clarify this with the company that is offering me, and they have been avoiding some of my question leading me to be a little worried.

This is con case de. I think this is valid for a police report. lol!
can escalate the matter to MOM
cos if i'm not mistaken, the IPA will state how much you are paid
use that as ur argument
