Review of Works Engineering Teflon Gear Knob Type HS

Bought this knob from Kent Goh recently, received and install last Thursday afternoon. In the past three days I've driven about 200 km with it so I think it's about time for a review.

The stock gear knob already has the perfect size and shape, but the plastiky-rubbery material doesn't feel nice. Originally I thought a bare metal knob would be nice but I settled for Teflon instead.

Knowing that Teflon is one of the most slippery materials, the Teflon knob does not feel as if it's been coated with engine oil. Instead, it is really smooth, but once your hand grips the knob it won't slip off accidentally.

I have long lamented the horrible shifting feel of the Aichi Pockai gearbox and I think it's the most horrible thing I can think of about this Gaga. Those of you with the FLX should be very grateful that Potong decided to upgrade the original gearbox and it's a pity I bought the Gaga one year too early. My original intention of buying the knob was just to have my left hand feel a nicer material while shifting, however, I was pleasantly surprised to find that because of the hard, rigid knob (as opposed to the stock rubbery and plasticky one), I can feel exactly where the lever is going while shifting and while it doesn't change the shifting feel (on the contrary it highlights how rubbery and vague the shifts are), I shift a lot more accurately and I really wished I bought this knob (along with all the other stuff I've done to my Gaga) much much earlier.

My only gripe is that I was expecting the whole knob to be spherical (except for the bottom, of course) just like the stock knob but instead the top is actually slightly flattened (see the comparison picture). Even worse, there was a slight crevice to stick the gear position sticker, which was something I didn't want to do and the crevice had a sharp edge. The first thing I did on Thursday night when I got home was to sandpaper off the sharp edge and now it's a lot nicer to hold but I still wished it was spherical. Other than that I'm really happy with this knob. Thank you again, Kent Goh.

To those of you who are suffering with the Aichi Pockai gearbox, do consider getting a rigid gear knob. It really helps.




PS it looks as if that the Teflon knob is a lot shorter than the stock knob, but when installed the position is exactly the same, it's just that the stock knob has a longer base that covers more of the gear stick, that's all.
