The Xeon E3-1230v2 processor has the a performance level equal or close to the Intel Core i7 3770, and it's cheaper too, so it makes it a rather worthwhile purchase. However if you insist on going with an Intel Core i7 processor instead, there's the i7 3770 for you to choose.

Marketing strategies and brand name, source of components used for their cards, circuit layout, and others. Other than that they both offer cards which have similar performance (if same model, e.g HD7970 with HD7970).

They have a similar level of performance depending on the game you play.

If you're talking about durability, it's a hit or miss with most people. It may last for several years, or it may last for just a year or two before requiring replacement.

Performance wise they should be able to satisfy you for quite some time to come, but don't expect too much as the prettier new games are, the more graphical processing power they'll require. Expect to change your card once every two to three years depending on what you have bought, and depending on how much you demand when playing .

remember tho, the only setbacks regarding xeon is that its not capable to overclock AT ALL
and
there is no Integrated GPU on board, so you need GPU attached at all time

just in case you going to send your graphic card for a warranty, you won't be able to use motherboard graphic input/output as usual since the proc doesn't support any on board graphic.

well, that's why for non oc'er, i'd prefer to take xeon if they wish to get performance of i7
