hmm guys, would like to have a decent upgrade for my secondary rig. Mostly will be used by my gf to play some The Sims 3.

Current spec (if my memory serves me right)

i3
2GB ram
5850

Just wanted to have a minor upgrade to have a smoother gameplay for her. Any help is appreciated thanks!

Would like to add that I have everything else. Just wanna upgrade the components required when upgrading the processor.

Nothing too fancy, mostly casual gaming like the Sims 3 and some casual MMOs or some Diablo 3.

Zotac GTX760 RM799
Kingston Value Ram 4gbx2 RM200

or add another 2gb ram
and i3 is good enough for gaming

Really it's the graphics card? All along I thought it was the processor. It was previously using an even weaker nVidia card but I gave it my second 5850 but it was still laggy for the Sims 3.

And I still have spare memory left while running the game. But RAM, as far as I've read, only affects up to 3-5 fps yes? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think for experiment sake, I'll try running the sims 3 on my main rig (i5, 2gb, 5850 as well).

You don't need that for Sims 3. Even a GTX 650 vanilla would be complete overkill for Sims 3.

You're right, it's the processor that's going to be the biggest upgrade.

If it's a HD 5850, then it will be more than enough to run Sims 3 on highest settings.

Think about it, what kind of game dev would release a game in 09 that would require a 2013 graphics card to run on high?

I have the same thought actually I was only looking to upgrade the proc and mobo.

he got 1k budget, why not?

I mentioned 1k budget, but that's the max, and if I can use less than that to achieve my goal, that will be my goal.

Because the money could be better spent elsewhere?

Do you have some recommendations on proc and mobo ? biggrin.gif

Which i3 you're using by the way?
*
Sorry, I was wrong. It is actually a Intel® Pentium® Processor E6300 (2M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB).

A cheap B85 board would suffice for your gf. Prices seem to be around 260 ish to 300.

I'd get a 4570 over a 4670, generally more bang for buck, 4670 only if you want every bit of performance increase at whatever the cost.
*
So
mobo B85 = RM250-300
i5 4570 = RM?
