BlackBerry has announced the Q5, a new mid-ranged handset which should replace the Curve in its Qwerty keyboard-packing form.

So there are now two Qwerty keyboard handsets that run BlackBerry 10: the Q10 and the Q5. But which should you choose? How do they compare? Read on for the key differences between the BlackBerry Q5 and Q10.

1. Camera

This is one of the main differences between the two phones. In short, the Q10 has an 8-megapixel camera similar to those you might find on current flagship handsets across iOS and Android.

The Q5 uses a 5-megapixel camera, which is more comparable to those found on feature phones and cheaper Android devices. The camera unit is probably one of the biggest cost-saving pieces on the Q5.

2. Display

The other area in which the Q5 gives itself away as a value for money phone is the screen. The display is a 3.1-inch 720 x 720 resolution IPS LCD, which doesn’t come close to the deep blacks and contrast-rich visuals found on the Super AMOLED screen on the Q10.

Both are the same resolution however, and the same size, so the sharpness and space you have to play with is identical. Viewing the Q5 straight on also results in colour vibrancy nearly as good as the Q10, to be fair.

3. Processor

There isn’t a huge difference in the performance stakes between the two phones. The Q5 is slightly less powerful than its bigger brother, at 1.2 GHz compared to the 1.5 GHz of the Q10.

Both are dual-core though, and the efficiency of BlackBerry 10 really means that a difference in speed is difficult to notice. You also have 2GB of RAM to play within both phones, so multi-tasking is decent enough.

READ: BlackBerry Q5 pictures and hands-on

4. Battery

Again, one of the less significant differences between the phones. The Q5 has a non-removable 2100mAh battery whereas the Q10 has a removable 2100mAh unit.

For power users and those intending to use push email, this is actually fairly important. Being able to carry a back-up battery and just swap it out when one goes flat should mean your Q10 lasts longer.

5. Design

The build quality of the Q5 doesn’t match up with the premium feel of the Q10. Having spent only a brief time with the phone, we can’t say for absolute sure, but the keyboard doesn’t appear to perform as well. There is some flex and wobble in the Q5 keyboard that isn’t there in the Q10.

The Q5 also loses some connectivity, in that it lacks a micro HDMI port. You do save on weight however, with BlackBerry’s value for money proposition tipping the scales at 120g to the Q10’s 139g.

Size differences are pretty negligable, but if you want specifics, the Q5 is 120 x 66 x 10.8 mm and the Q10 119.6 x 66.8 x 10.4 mm. There really isn’t enough there to notice a difference.

6. Memory

Last but by no means least is the difference in storage between the two phones. With the Q5 you have 8GB of memory to play with and microSD support for up to 32GB of storage.

On the Q10, there is 16GB of internal space and support for 64GB microSD cards, meaning there is a lot more memory to use on the Q10.

7. So which to choose?

If you are on a budget the Q5 looks like a very impressive Qwerty keyboard phone. While BlackBerry hasn’t announced exact costs yet, it is aimed at emerging markets and the budget end of the scale in other countries (including the UK), so don’t expect it to be hugely expensive. That given, the specifications are very impressive.

My industry sources say mid-end July. Definitely not a budget phone more like between budget and mid-range of there is such a thing! I've been using Z10 for months not and I love the new OS. Been able to load many android apps. Check out my website for a walkthrough on how to load (practically) any android app

I'm bringing these guys in. Stock arrives 5th of July. PM me if your interested!

Thanks

I think it's more like Bold price range rather than Curve. The specs are obviously better too, so $400 is sensible.
Although I was hoping (wishful thinking) that it would do $350-ish the most instead.

The non-removable batt might be a bit worrysome as sometimes we need battery pull. But anyway I like the design, and believe there's a workaround on the batt pull thingy smile.gif

They will most likely subside the price to below 1k on a 12 or 24 month contract. Most likely to some Malaysian number like RM998 or RM888.

I think some sellers already started selling right?

I recall BB Q5 even launching stated 15th July, official price RM1299 as said on thread title

as for launching they already did a media launch earlier this month, so I don't think there will be another big launching event happening. Maybe expect them to setup some booth during the weekend for promoting Q5 i guess

it's 3GB by the total of 3 months, it's actually 1 GB + 60 minutes per month for 3 months, and it's RM38 per month, still, worth RM100++ and I'd say it's quite worth to buy

agreed.

my cuzz wanted to change to Q10 but changed his mind because the price is too expensive. many people don't really want to pay premium price just for the build quality even if it's stainless steel + glass weave back.

hi, just wanna ask, is the price still maintained at RM1299, or has it been lowered?

Not interested in getting a new postpaid plan (i got an unlimited data plan, so planning to keep it even if the speed is only a little faster than EDGE)

RM1299 is still the official price.

Street price is lower. You could probably get an AP set that is less than RM1k if you're lucky.

no need to subscribe any kind of BIS/BES for OS10 already. Use normal data package will work.

RM1299 is still the official price.

Street price is lower. You could probably get an AP set that is less than RM1k if you're lucky.

It's rm1080 for ori. No need go for AP set now.

Just turn of mobile data. Though i'm not sure if that feature is available for BB10 or not (legacy OS can do that, turn on wifi, turn off mobile data)

Q5 all workings without BIS. BB10 is different with BB7

Q5 can use by WiFi.

Can work on wifi. Now the new BB OS 10 don't require you to subscribe to BIS/BES. And for malaysian set, supposedly all is 4g enabled. Unless you're buying them from overseas, best check their model number or ask seller. But if you're type that like to be connected at all times, should get data plan (unless your area has wifi easily available) though you should take some time to research the phone before buying it. Since their app selection is limited.
P.S. I'm also waiting for the price to drop further before I get one.

Just bought a Q5 to replace my ancient and marked for death by Micro$oft N97 (mainly because it's the only phone sold in Malaysia with a keyboard, and the Android compatibility layer intrigues me). I think it's a solid phone, and comparing it to the ChaCha (which I also own) is unfair- this thing is far more powerful than the ChaCha and better designed. I've chosen it as my main phone, so far it works fine. The only problem with it is that the Android compatibility is somewhat limited- Amazon app cannot scan barcodes although it still works for the main purpose of mobile online shopping, Shazam cannot scan music, and both eBuddy and Opera Mini crashes the compatibility layer (although that doesn't crash the phone, but the inability to use Opera Mini is painful because DiGi has no 3G coverage in the mountains i.e. Frasers Hill and certain Cameron Highlands towns, and most islands off the east coast i.e. Tioman and Redang).

It also doesn't support Blackberry 7 Java programs- which Amazon app, Shazam, and Opera Mini is available for, so you're locked out of all the older but useful programs available for older BB phones.

If you are feeling adventurous, there's a way where you can run almost 90% of Android apps except GAPPs, natively. But it still will have Android style interface.

I'm aware of the method, but I don't really feel like wiping it and putting in the beta 10.2.1 at the moment. Plus, it read somewhere that BB plans to have the FW out by Febuary earliest, so I'm fine with waiting.
