it's nothing to do with the update - it's because of the storage problem..do more readup dude...my old n7 still running very well on cyanogenmod which is btw on 4.2.x

Oh well, if s4 pro got problem with 4.4 later, then I think Nexus 4 users are also having the "lag" issue that you are facing now in your old Nexus 7 since Nexus 4 is using s4 pro too.
Lowyat plaza or any other Asus authorized store etc. It should be easy to find after the official launch just like last year when old Nexus 7 was launched, you can find them through online store and physical store.

Just want to clarify (a basic thing for some here, I guess), if I root and install a custom recovery like TWRP (assuming I don't do anything else - no other customisations), I won't be able to receive OTA updates from Google in the usual manner, right? If I want those OTA updates in the usual manner, I will have to stick to stock recovery?

Yes, it does. But maybe I'll delay root for now, on second thoughts. KitKat 4.4 will be out by the end of this month (if not sooner), so I'll just delay root till then.
