Whats the difference between Inspiron and Vostro anyway? Is the Vostro build quality much better and can withstand constant trips?

I thought Vostro series would be well suited for trips. The thing I want is:

1. Fast boot up, so I don't have to wait forever to get to the desktop (Core i3 is enough right?)
2. Laptop that doesn't feel like its fragile and about to break.
3. Got enough juice for about 3-4 hours.
4. 3-4 USB slots.
5. Light, but not Ultrabooks as those are expensive.

I sometime wonder if there are significant difference between Inspiron and Vostro unit. I do a lot of work outside which requires me to bring laptop. Need it to boot up fast and furious, while still able to use it for entertainment like web surfing/youtube in situation where I go travelling.

normally Inspiron will be bulky in design, comes with low or mid range of spec.
Vostro focus more on mid range performance since it aim for business people. vostro tend to ignore their design since business people wont look into design anyway.

but i wonder why this model Vostro 5460 is different case. It seems like Dell focus more on the design, slim, light and portability but they ignore the performance of the laptop. Lots of complain on its WIFI telling that it only cover short range and the signal detection is very weak.

I thought Vostro line was sort of for business people (build tough for travel) while Inspiron would be for students/home use.

If given choice I go for Vostro, but I just keep hearing issues with the Vostro so I am hesitate to purchase one at the moment, especially since it still on 3rd gen iCore processor.

Between Latitude and Vostro, I suppose Latitude is more solid and that of higher quality?

The vostro ultrabook suffer from this

1. Harddisk failure (Eithe the HDD will die or the Board will fried)
2. Battery failure (New notebook barely last 2hours)
3. Fragile (Dont drop)

We (as a company) uses 20++ of this notebook not even one escape from Harddisk failure or IC board burn...

Aih..this is kind of a bummer. I'm just a few days of wanting to get a notebook. Its between Acer and Dell now.

You mean your company can get Vostro 5460 / 5470 with W7P?
Our IT has checked, Dell don't entertain. Anyway, for the previous batch, we decided to stick with Latitude E5430 for the juniors. Currently checking if Latitude 14 3000 is ok or not (cheaper than E5430), otherwise may wait for Latitude 14 5000 later this year.

You from dell for real?

If so, any word on when is Inspiron 7000 series coming to Malaysia?

Should I:

1. Wait for Inspiron 7000 (and will it be a light like Vostro)?

2. Go for Vostro 5470?

vostro 5460 and 5470 only got 1 slot
i think max can go only 8gb  nod.gif

8GB is good enough, even 4GB is okay with me. Its not like we're going to run uber gaming rig.

I've decided to wait till early next month to purchase a laptop. Word has it that the new aluminium Inspiron lappy will be out that time, so don't want to be regret for not waiting just a little bit longer.

bros, i've been using the 5470 for a few hours now. I really hate the touchpad i would say...but the multitouch gestures do come in handy.

However, i have been looking at my Performance Monitor and I notice that Disk Writes is at 100% many of the times while my CPU hardly reaches 90% and at normal usage i am using 70% of my RAM.

I do feel some lag somehow, I wonder it's windows 8 or its due to the 100% Disk writes.

and wow...i can tell you that the battery rocks...it doesn't seem to end

What is it you hate about the touch pad? Yours is icore3 with or without nvidia?

Dell repairman told me Vostro is the model to go for if you are very mobile. Inspirons are what he said "fragile".

I'll say Vostro 5460 / 5470 are quite "fragile" as well tongue.gif (i.e. the body / shell twist as much as the normal Inspiron tongue.gif. In fact, I'll say the new Inspiron 7000 series is slightly more "solid" than this Vostro  hmm.gif ). The repairman may be referring to the older Vostro 3460.

For mobile workforce on a tight budget, if you are into Dell, may want to have a look at Latitude 14 3000 (Latitude 3440) as well. Weight 2.0kg (about the same as Inspiron 14 7000), but solid enough (not as solid as the Latitude 6430 that I'm using in office, but still good), and can opt for 65Whr battery tongue.gif Price is also quite competitive for proper business class laptop (< RM3k). No docking port though (need to use USB docking). (in fact, I have the sneaky feeling that Dell has "move" the old Vostro line into Latitude 3000 series (since we don't see any Haswell refresh for Vostro 3360 / 3460 / 3560), and let Vostro brand run with 5470 type of models  hmm.gif )

The dell repairman talked to me about laptop model reliability, and he did mentioned about latitude being the better choice, although funny enough he was repairing a faulty new latitude right in front of me (motherboard issue).

Considering that Inspiron 7000 is very new its hard to tell if it is tough as the old and new Vostro.

I would really like to go for Inspiron 11 3000 series (RM1399 on dell.com), but the cheap price has me worry about its reliability.

Latitude seems like a b**** to find. In fact it was the first model I wanted to go for but for some oddball reason Dell refuse to put up the series for sale online. The RM4k price being sold on retailers aren't helping either.
