@scarxxx
@pastacarbonara

You two got the i5-3230M processor right? Can elaborate further on the battery life? How long does it last under usual conditions?
And how hot will the laptop be under usual conditions after some time (under the laptop and beside the mousepad)?

I want to get the Ubuntu model because I don't like win8 and feel I need a long time to get used to it, which I don't have time for as I need to do a lot of important assignments. Don't want to fork out extra for an OS that I dislike.

But Ubuntu versions don't have the ULV processor. Will it be a major problem on battery life? I know that processors is very difficult and not worth to upgrade unlike RAM, SSD and so on where you just take out and put in.

By the way, has anyone found out whether SSD can be installed? @pastacarbonara, have you done your upgrade? How was it?

As for the battery life, I can't comment as I am just about to test it tonight. smile.gif
As for the heat, it will release at the back of the laptop not at the side. If normal usage like, surfing and Youtubing, it will not be hot.

If you decided to use Ubuntu, you try to tweak the power management to save extra power.

Okay, keep us updated tonight! Thanks  rclxms.gif
Hmm..back of laptop? Means will feel quite hot when use on my lap instead of putting on table? Is the heat bearable?

Do let us know how long does battery last without any tweaking, cause will be using win7, so Ubuntu power save may not apply smile.gif
*
So far, the heat is bearable and it is not extremely hot. If you put it on your lap should be fine. Somehow if you want to put it on your lap, you gotta be extra careful as the machine is very light...

I will run the laptop on 100% brightness and no tweaking of the power management. Let's see how long the laptop can last.

Just finished my testing on the battery life.

Machine Spec: Stated in my signature
OS: Stated in my signature

Settings:
- 100% brightness
- no screensaver
- power management turned off
- WIFI connected

1. Turned on my laptop without any power from the adapter.
2. WIFI connected automatically.
3. Leave it as it is on my desk.

Result: It can last approximately 3.5 hours (left 5%)

Other Findings:- The heat is very minimal.

Wow
Thanks for the feedback
So i think its safe to assume it can sustain about 2 hours if surfing and do a heavy task rite?
*
You assume that amount of time.

Perhaps tweaking the power management will help to gain extra few minutes? Anyway tweak around with the setting to find the suitable one..

just my 2 cents.

I tried to look at the user manual but nothing stated about the size of the mSata. sad.gif
Since kam_4160 have shown in his post above, I think I will scrap the idea of installing a mSata and get a SSD instead. hmm.gif

SSD too costly with limitation of space...... 256GB cost RM600 to 800....... =.=''
better get Msata 64GB to install OS, and 500HDD for storage......
js the Msata used by dell is kanasai non-famous half-size....... cry.gif
*
I have been thinking about this option for a very long time but now I know that the mSata size for this laptop is kinda odd.
kam_4160, do you have any idea where can by that mSata?

do call to ask dell CS, they don't sell msata separately  cry.gif
no much option for this size of msata, 64gb one gt sandisk and few china brand only in taobao.
which sandisk is sata3, and china brand gt sata2 only.
just wonder whether ori or not if order from taobao china

maybe perhaps any owner of the highest spec for this laptop can help by taking off the mSata and identify the brand and model of the mSata. from there we should be able to find the mSata in malaysia market.. hmm.gif hmm.gif

Dear Vostro 5460 user:

DON't BUY half-sized mSATA SSD. This is because its BIOS itself doesn't support using MSATA SSD as boot-up, only can be used as cache. If you really want a cache mSATA, u should buy ultrabook version.
*
aristotletan where do you get the source stating that? Don't get me wrong here but I just want to read them. biggrin.gif

All words written in chinese, if you are Malay you can use google translate.
FYI, that guy is Dell Expert in China, so I don't think he will made mistake here.
*
Thanks aristotletan... Too bad I can't read chinese even though I am a chinese. tongue.gif
If what he mentioned is correct then even we plug in the mSata into the machine, mSata will not be appearing in the device to boot from in the bios screen? If yes, then there is no point getting mSata

in order to confirm this, owners with the highest spec can only verify by going into the bios and check em out.

But then the statement below is quite confusing:

Translated: If you want to use mechanical drive (HDD) with SSD hybrid, you may disassemble optical drive??
But there's no ODD present in Vostro 5460, maybe use the ODD slot? Seriously I'm not sure.
*
this is weird.. We dont even have an optical drive. sweat.gif sweat.gif

is there any default option with msata from dell outside malaysia? i can see all malaysia option doesnt come with msata. The mini slot is identical with one of acer or asus laptop, anyone manage to get that size of msata locally? or it is useless since some of you stated it wont display in the system?  rclxub.gif
*
The highest spec in Malaysia come with mSata but the mSata only act as cache. Unable to install any OS on the mSata which rule me out from getting a mSata to slot into my machine.
