read previous posts.
owner of 5460 had no problem swapping HDD out for SSD.
*
dont worry, 5460 can support SSD, just remember you will need 7mm size since 9mm won't fit

may i know how big and the weight for the adapter? because i'm torn to either buy vostro 5470 or toshiba u840t for my wife. if laptop only, the vostro is lighter than the toshiba, but toshiba's power adapter is small and light. I reckon the power adapter for the vostro should be quite big and heavy since it's going to power the nvidia gc inside it, right?
*
medium in size light in weight, although it is not that "flat type" which is provided for netbook. you should go to shop and have a look to have better view.

I guess is a known problem for the whole fleet of 5470 not only to this particular model.
Oh wells, will live with it.  sweat.gif

many slim-book have problem with wifi (weak signal) not only from dell. the previous 5460 also faced similar problem, wifi in living room, signal lose 1-2 bar when close door compare to open door in bed room and it happens in apartment, i wonder how it is in a double story house.

My laptop is Acer V5-473PG (direct competitor to Dell 5470). Unfortunately I didn't encounter any wifi problem. I am staying at hostel 4th floor but I able connect my uni wifi hotspot located at LG. Somemore you know there's many hotspot and limited wifi channels will interfere with each other to make the signal weak, but it works perfectly. I almost purchase Vostro 5470 but luckily I didn't.  biggrin.gif

Lucky, but i heard that some asus and lenovo have problems also, maybe after all depends on your roll on luck biggrin.gif

Unless I'm wrong, the mb doesn't support boot up from normal ssd (replacing hdd). However it does boot up from half size msata ssd.
*
5460 yes, you can boot from ssd (7mm), 5470 dunno.

My 5470 doesn't have wifi issue & its on Intel not Realtek card. However, I discovered that it cannot boot from msata despite reading several forums on this subject that it can. It seems Dell uses different MB on the Vostro model for different countries & this has lead to different experience by owners of the same model. I have also tried several bios version (A05 & A06) for 5470 downloaded from Dell Msia & Dell USA to test..no luck.

Another issue is that after installing kingfast half height msata 128GB, the nb hangs for about 80-90sec at POST. This i read could be due to incompatibility to mb. But after the longer boot up time, the bios recognizes the msata & windows could accesses the drive as per normal. There were several occasions after POST, bios could not detect msata & Windows didnt show it either. However after reboot, it gets detected. Digging further from Dell site, there is a special driver for Liteon msata but it can't be installed for other msata ssd. So I'm not sure if the Vostro only recognizes Liteon msata & require msata driver to work properly. Googling, I couldn't find anybody selling Liteon half height msata on the net.

If i have some time will test if it can boot from 7mm ssd...

your boot partition in harddrive or Msata?

Boot sector & OS is now on hdd & msata is only another drive. POST is experiencing the boot up delay.

I tried installing Win8 in msata with & without hdd installed. While I managed to install Win 8 on msata ignoring warnings, it won't boot up from msata.
*
put the boot sector (100mb EFI system) on your hdd(drive1), and your window on your msata (disk0).

then you will need to remap your boot address of your bootloader to read the win file from msata. recommendation = EasyBCD.

bios set to boot from (drive1). i got it work in win7, not sure about win8.

Dont know where this was copied from but my bios under advance tab dont have iRST. I have read this earlier before I bought the Vostro. However after looking at the actual bios options following my purchase, found that its not the same. Also under device boot priority, there is no msata option for me to escalate up as first boot device.
better censored your service tag... biggrin.gif

if you can't boot from msata, you can try to boot from hdd with hdd boot partition to read the os from msata

I think the msata i got might not be very compatible with this vostro. Or else POST won't hang for longer than usual. The compatibility is an issue here cause occasionally the nb wont recognize the msata. If the OS is installed there, the nb will require a hard reboot should it not recognized the msata. I dont have time at the moment to test if this vostro 5470 version can boot from ssd. I have one 7mm ssd 128gb in my nettop which I could swap over for the testing. Busy on my work matters for now... Will appreciate if others have time to try booting from ssd.

5460 definitely no problem booting from ssd. 5470 might not, since dell official configuration doesnt have ssd in the selection only msata.. hmm.gif previous 5460 got ssd setup for official purchase.

I have recently changed to this wifi card (N5460) and see no improvement (only 5mbps on 100mbps broadband but it can max my upload speed (6mbps)).

I stuck my N2230 to a Toshiba thick laptop with the antenna built into the monitor and have good reception, speed and stability --> The problems is not the card itself but the laptop antenna.

I am using a cheap realtek card RTL8723AE (G band) taken out of my Toshiba and it works better than intel card, but still limited speed based on the placement of the laptop. I conclude dell has compatibility issues with intel card and poor placement (inadequate) wifi antenna.

So frustrated I bought Linksys AE3000 in Sep 2013 and it never fails me in any categories (low latency, consistent network speed, maximize speed, etc.) but that's just too inconvenient.
*
nod.gif they change the antenna, then the card from intel to realtek to killer, finally gave up and getting refund. whistling.gif

Don't ever buy DELL laptops!

I have been using DELL computers and laptops for more than 10 years, I know what I am talking about.

DELL laptops will conk out just after the warranty period. If you still insist on buying DELL desktops or laptops, pay more for longer warranty period and pray for the best.
*
Yes nod.gif , at least 2 years, you can opt for refund/replacement within the period rolleyes.gif

thanks! so i just have to call dell and inform them izzit? sorry for asking, pretty new with this thing
*
Yes, tell them you are "unsatisfied" with the performance and bla..bla. bla.., they will ask you to connect to internet for troubleshooting, they will only come for repair after they "acknowledge" your problem.

if they ask you to use speedtest or similar website, ask them to f*** off, speedtest is for web traffic not hardware.
