I choose Y580 instead of the Y500 due to this reason, i need more storage space than gaming power...

Would like to ask some Y580 user here, the Mute button on top will lights up when in Mute mode or only lights up on press and gone upon release?

QUOTE(kuroneko0509 @ Jun 30 2013, 10:52 PM) no idea, did it just happened or from the start? Well, i think from start it's like that, or at least that's what i see in Win7Ultimate 64bit, not sure how it goes when in Win8... let me try boot into Win8 and see how it goes... you register your system online, then later when you wanna claim the warranty, the service center just can check the machine detail from their server... i think |

Oh, one verification for the Mute button. When I'm using the USB Digital Speaker, it only light up upon press but this button can Mute and Unmute. While with the laptop speaker, it will Mute and lights up along as it's in Mute mode, and pressing it again will not unmute... anyone else agrees with my observations?

QUOTE(mrl @ Jul 1 2013, 12:31 AM) kinda confuse with your explanation... Yes, that is observed when you're using the laptops' speaker but i can only use it to Mute it and when in Mute mode, I cannot unmute with pressing the button as nothing happens. While another case was that I'm using external USB Digital Input Speaker, so the mute button will only lights up when i press it, release it and it will go dark again, even in mute mode, but funnily the button can use for both mute and unmute function, not like when using the laptop speaker which only can used for muting and not unmute. but mine will light up if muted, and doesn't light up if it isn't mute... win7 and win8 both behave the same... |

QUOTE(tennytyy @ Jul 3 2013, 12:46 PM) Currently using the 10.0.0.209, after work will try update to 10.0.0.234 and see how it goes. Or else might consider to change some other wifi card... PS: Just checked the list there and there was no 209 version listed so it might not be a stable version which might be causing the problem... Last time I use to make a recovery USB to install the Win8 into my SSD, but the trick is that I need to install one Win7 as dummy to trick the recovery USB and let me to install the Win8 onto the SSD. The steps for making the recovery USb can be found here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/...?DocID=HT076024
Not sure does it work for the mSATA but hope it does helps... |

QUOTE(Cynox @ Jul 18 2013, 09:21 AM) so those AP sets sellers claiming the AP sets has international warranty are just misleading us? Actually i did input my Y510p's serial number in the Malaysia Lenovo website and it indicate a valid 1 year warranty. But I dun know what is the actual situation when really need to RMA at local service centre. Finger cross i never need to RMA it. About the HDD caddy you mentioned, is it going to be the original from Lenovo or any brand of caddy will work? As for Y500 and Y510 are designed for SLi so is the connector port is same or different then what you see on Y580?BTW, tested with some games yesterday, BF3 only fine to play in 1680x1050 in single player campaign, Full HD will bring a black blank screen. For multi-player, after loading into games, straight black blank screen, any reso won't help. I do see some playing BF3 with it at Youtube though. I already updated my video driver to the latest. Test Company of Heroes 2 - can only play in all setting low in FHD. My Y510p is single GPU only. Took out the original hard disk and put a Plextor m5s 128 SSD inside and loaded Windows 7. Will get a hard disk caddy for the original 1tb hard disk and do dual boot. The exhaust fan is blowing out hot air while gaming but no very noticeable higher noise. The left hand palm-rest area is heating up during gaming too. |

QUOTE(funkydude @ Jul 31 2013, 07:31 AM) Ok guys, I need your help for my dilemma. Any opinions/recommendations are greatly appreciated. Maybe can try the Windows disk error check for a fix for the freeze/lag. While for the SSD, it all boils down to what you can afford and which specs that you favor towards, either higher capacity or speed along with your range of budget. But for me, i will always go with capacity, as no matter how fast your SSD able to run, the capacity will always be the 1st limit to hit on, given that all of those nice high end game now-a-days will be like at least 8GB and above... I been a Y480 user for almost a year now and I always do love my Y480. Never had much of a problem with it. But lately, an occasional freeze or lagging (though just for a short second) happened now and then. I suspected these occurred due to the HDD (Mine is stock 5400 RPM HDD). So I'm thinking of replacing it with a SSD. And that is where my dilemma begins. I'm a bit clueless about SSD. All I know is that SSD performs way way better than HDD. I know there are many brands and types? of SSD available on the market. So the question is which SSD should I get? I'm curious which SSD is the best suited for my Y480. I got many deliberations in choosing the SSD to buy. I will put them in number form so it is easier. 1. Performance over money? Should I buy the "best of the best" one on the market? Or should I buy the one with the best bang for bucks? Or just anything as long it is a SSD (Cheapest one is good enough?)? Because I'm wondering if it is worth it to buy the best of the best for my Y480 here. I do play a lot of high-end games. Current released games and future anticipated games. And I do a bit of heavy Photoshopping and video rendering now and then. 2. Capacity? I read an article stating that higher capacity SSD performs much better. My choice is either 128GB or 256GB. 512GB is out of my budget. So I'm wondering if is worth it to get 256GB or perhaps 128GB is enough? I did my calculation and I found that 128GB will just barely be enough for my need (Probably 5GB left of free space). Honestly I'm leaning a bit to 256GB because I like to have a bit more space. But that is just me. If thinking rationally, would having a massive 50-100GB free space worth it? Maybe there others factors I should consider but so far this is my main concern. If there are other factors worth considering, please let me know. tl;dr Need help with choosing the best SSD for my Y480. Plays high-end games. A lot. And heavy Photoshopping and video rendering. Oh about my budget. Around RM600-RM700 is acceptable. But I'm willing to spend a bit (a lot?) more IF it is really worth to extra cash. Thanks in advance This post has been edited by xyz_cityhunter: Jul 31 2013, 10:04 AM |

QUOTE(funkydude @ Jul 31 2013, 12:09 PM) Tried checking the disk for error but no problem reported. It just that I don't think anything else have a problem. My HDD do makes lot of loud whirring sounds constantly. Like it is under lot of strain. Since I really do want to upgrade my Y480 anyway, I thought swapping the HDD for SSD would be the best. Maybe your HDD is about to spoil, try get some HDD diagnose tool from WD or Seagate to check it out. And about the capacity, though I agree more is better, I still had to consider the price of owning a 512GB/960GB. My wallet will fly Now I really think I should go for 256GB. I have this huge irritation if my drive is almost full so 128GB probably not good enough haha. And I can always buy more external HDD to store my movies/anime if 256GB also not enough Your Y480 should be able to run at full speed if you connect it to the SATA3 and move the HDD to the SATA2, the rest will be the software optimization, i do notice that load time for games is faster but if compare the speed ratio of HDD to SSD, the load time doesn't really goes as fast as the SSD top speed so mostly the SSD Read/Write speed are for transferring large files. And do remember, when one SSD fails, you can pretty much expect all of the data inside are not recoverable so I go for the most secured brand, Intel. For Y480 that comes with Intel i7 and 4GB ram as the most basic model in M'sia, maybe you can consider to upgrade the ram to 8GB or higher if you're running heavy software/games to avoid that bottleneck. Or else, i don't think anything else that you can upgrade... except for upgrading the whole laptop... |
