Hm, anyone know of any software tools to check on faults on Wifi Card? Somehow lately see like my Wifi speed suddenly drop (not all the time but random) when i was clicking into new page (from 400kBps suddenly into almost 0bps). Really considering to get a Wifi dongle or Intel Wifi card to replace if the current one is faulty... =S

why not sent to SC for replacement? smile.gif

Because it does not happens all the time but at random cases, and since the wifi card model is already a lousy one, it's better to replace with a more reliable one cause i need to compete for bandwidth in a house with shared internet... hmm.gif

I usually just do ping to router in such cases... if it drops without any reason, with high signal, probably it is faulty... though if you are on win8 try to google around if your card got driver updates cause one thing for sure win8's driver for wifi is problematic...
*
I'm on Win7... Last time saw the release of the latest driver on July 2013 and i've been using that since Aug then it started to give me problem a month later after i update. At first i thought it was some faulty hardware because the problem didn't arise directly after driver update so i didn't suspect that was the problem. Since then the problem escalated and it's giving me more problem as times goes by (like when playing Dota2, i'm getting delay at first, then spike lag and lastly always sudden dc), and then just now the problem was so serious that the wireless status was like toggling between 'searching', 'connected with internet access', 'connected without internet access' and 'wifi network available' in an infinite loop... rclxub.gif
First i tried to take out the wifi card and clean the connector pins to see if it helps but still same. Then i ruled out that the problem was with my router by testing with my handphone, and lastly I just try my luck on deleting the Wifi card driver and let the Win7 to reinstall with an older version which seems to be the solution for my problem... shocking.gif
Hopefully with this my problem is solved... sweat.gif

whoahhhhhhhh... another driver issue?? and it get released....  shocking.gif
they are getting scarier by days...

Maybe my unit affected because I did have one cloud storage software which was listed as one of the wireless adapters, hell broke loose after i uninstalled that. And also it seems that my wireless mouse also having some effect on the wireless traffic, can see a spike drop of the download speed when i wake up my mouse from sleep mode... cry.gif And since I'm using SSD in the main SATA slot and the HDD caddy in the optical bay, I'm having problem with running video/music files from my HDD when on battery only, by random timing, the video/music will be halt and the player will seems like not responding, I do notice that whenever this happens, there will be a huge spike in the Memory 100 hard faults/sec inside the Resource Monitor. I do suspect that either the core or the south bridge on the motherboard is faulty but still didn't manage to catch the main culprit yet... rclxub.gif

QUOTE(mrl @ Oct 15 2013, 09:08 PM)
judging from the wireless mouse effect, maybe you got interference between mouse and wifi... try to change the channel of the wifi.

though there's a probability it's just a whole system problems but i dont expect it to be on the hardware side since you mentioned all hell broke loose after you uninstall the cloud storage software... easiest way to test, format... if it comes back good, means that software probably messed up your driver... else, it probably got to your hardware already.

alternatively, you probably can try to cleanly uninstall drivers and re-install every driver all over again...
*
Yeah, change from 1 to 6 and now seems better... While cloud storage software only cause the wireless adapter to become haywire, the video/music player problem was observed way before that. When i first got my laptop, i encountered this problem then traced back toward HDD, send to SC and they changed a new HHD for me. And now again the problem but not really the HDD problem as now only happens when i'm on battery only, previous HDD happens either on power supply or battery. So i suspect either the voltage supply or the south bridge connecting the SATA channel to the optical bay to be the main culprit, the only problem on identifying which is that the problem does happens at random and since those 2 are on board components so i cannot swap with new ones... hmm.gif And DAT wifi card, really damn weak. Use my handphone can still steal some bandwidth to browse when this laptop cannot access... doh.gif

Think of reformatting the Win7 to see if it's a system problem but got lazy to reinstall all my software so not doing it at the moment... tongue.gif

Would like some confirmation from any Y580 user or any Y series user with the Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wifi card, for my Y580, the Wifi antenna cable connection is that the black one connected to the MAIN while the black with white shrink tube is connected to the ALT, can anyone confirm that this connections are same or only mine got swapped? shakehead.gif

Wireless LAN Driver (CyberTan/Broadcom, Liteon/Atheros) for Microsoft Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit)
this, BTW I hope we can change to Intel Wi-Fi card...lol
the poor signal is due to the antenna I think, we got only two if compare to other laptop which got three
and also atheros wi-fi card is not so good la....

Planning to upgrade the Atheros card with an Intel card... Either 7260 or 6205... Will post the results after i finish bargaining with the eBay seller from China... hmm.gif
While the antenna does have effect on the signal strength but will have to look at the wifi card as well. And if your laptop wifi not running at Wireless N protocol which support the multi T:R stream then 1 antenna is enough for a/b/g, the number of stream does limited by the numbers of antenna but only applies on N (2 needed) and AC (3 needed) protocol, go have a read on MIMO Antenna on how things work.

i don't quite understand.. mind explain me more? I'm still not getting a full bar even placed just beside my router..
how do you change the wifi card? is it replaceable by dyi?
*
Hm, which part which you would like to understand? The not getting full bar is pretty much due to either the antenna or the cheap wifi card, in which I will need to change either one with better one then only i can say which is the main cause for getting weak wifi signal, since the antenna will take quite some effort so i opt for the wifi card first. And yes you can DYI changing the wifi card but will need to flash a modded BIOS as the original BIOS only allows certain wifi card model to be connected at bootup (which they call it the white list). Do mind that flashing the BIOS will void the warranty if got caught by the service center when you send in for claims... whistling.gif
The N and AC protocol will be wireless router dependent so if you want then just list the model of the router you're using and i will look into it then suggest which model suitable for your use... icon_rolleyes.gif

Any Y480 or Y580 (With Win8) user here that still have their HDD partition untouch? Would like to ask for some files from the recovery partition to test some Win8 reset function as I have deleted all my partitions to install Win7...

I have them intact... but not sure how to pass them to you...

Can you list out the partition you have under the Disk Management? Mine is 500GB so may need the same size for reference... as for the files, i'm trying to find some factory reset OKR from China to factory reset the unit and see how it goes... Worst case is to sent it to SC and ask them to reformat for me.

ooouuhhhhh... i thought you meant one running on Win8.... didn't realize you meant one that comes with Win8...  sweat.gif

Then I think your OKR button won't function properly since you upgrade from Win7 so i think you better prepare a recovery media of ur current windows so that you can upgrade again from factory reset...

And one good news is that I was able to upgrade my Win8 into Win8.1 using the Lenovo Engineering OKR 8.0 with OEM Win8 (PRC) leaked version... Lucky i made a Win8 Recovery Media before i wipe the whole HDD... sweat.gif

You're spot on on that... OKR doesn't function. Thing is, I dont really care about that function actually. I can always do clean install and get drivers from the web, that's much preferred by me. I know that OKR is easy, but I probably gonna spend another bunch of time cleaning up the mess of the bloated apps that I'm not gonna use...

so, yeah... that's what I prefer, it's just me...  tongue.gif
*
Since urs is upgrade version then you have the serial number which any normal retail version of Win8 or Win8.1 can accept then should be much problem not to use the OKR. Mine is built into the BIOS and somehow Microsoft recognize it as OEM version so a normal retail version of Win8 or Win8.1 will not be able to activate using it and hence problem... Luckily for me, the internet is friendly enough for me to get hold of a leak OEM Win8 version for me to fix my OEM serial number problem... thumbup.gif

I have never tried this, but have you checked out the restore to factory settings options in Win8? Win8 does have a feature that can wipeout everything and restore it to default condition but never tried that...

I was thinking that can replace OKR though OKR will be more useful if you like the bundled apps I guess. hmm.gif
*
Well, the Reset function will have some limitations so be careful as one error msg will come out (My case is missing partition, cannot proceed) and you will be left high and dry...

As for the OKR, if you're able to create a new backup image (.wsi i think) then should not be any problem. The only problem i can think of is the OKR version where Win7 run on OKR 7.0 while Win8 needs OKR 8.0. The different version might explain the difference of partition of native Win7 and Win8 units. If you can create a new backup image of your fav Windows+Software bundle then hell yeah, no need to manually install all the side software that you use or at least when doing recovery, it will be done in one shot instead of need you to attend to each of the software installations... thumbup.gif

Check which software is eating your processing power in the Task Manager (malware or something), and try Firefox which have better graphic processing compared to Chrome.
