I realized my laptop disk usage always 100% in task manager, happens randomly and especially the first 10 minutes or so after reboot, anyone know what causes this?
*
Always happens to me nowadays... but that's because i dont turn on my laptop that much so all sort of updates are being installed once I turn it on...

Who is still using Y480 now?
My Y480 still rock after 2 years of usage...XD
*
I'm still with my Y580 (rarely turn on though, only when travelling) and still rocking Battlefield 4 at 720p medium.... XD

Though somehow Windows 8 decides to be a jerk to me, leaking memory all over when playing not at desktop resolution mad.gif

Used to run fine, but this time it decides to give me headache... But, disassembly process and applied new thermal paste really worth the effort as it managed to keep the CPU and GPU well below 90'C (IIRC around 78 - 80'C) at Malaysian room temperature without any additional cooler... thumbup.gif Last time I run BF3 in US winter time (turn off heater, room well below 20'C) it runs 100'C

I ran The Sims 2 as well, 75'C for GPU but CPU is a little bit hot at 85 - 90'C... thumbup.gif

So, whoever hasn't disassemble and replace the thermal paste yet you are recommended to do so... Once opened, you will be surprised at the quality of the paste Lenovo used... they really cut corners there... completely dried up for me... not to mention the thermal pads get thinned and didn't even touch the memories/vrms... after replaced, I've never touched 100'C even once on CPU and GPU...

Thanks for replying guys. So will you say it is a good buy for someone who plan to use it for just gaming???
*
If you can wait, wait for Y50/Y40... It would be much better...

but if you can't wait, Y410P is a good buy for gaming... just don't expect it to run any newer games at 1080p if you ever hook it up to external monitor...

I'm afraid, not even the 510p can be purchased anymore. EOL'ed to make way for Y50/Y40
*
you're right... but I was under assumption he knows someone who still has stock though... laugh.gif

thing is, I checked last few days Y50/Y40 still doesn't appear on Lenovo Malaysia's website... I wonder if it's officially available in Malaysia right now or not...

I am wondering which one is better, nvdia 650m vs 710m as in y480 and s410
bigger number better? no?
*
The difference is like heaven and earth... 650M scores double than 710M in PassMark benchmark. Not to mention they are both in 2 different categories fighting 2 different league.

Go for 650M. Sometimes I just wonder what the heck is 710M is doing there when the performance is pretty much IGP level.

hmm... I was wondering if I upgrade Y50's 8gb to 16gb... will there be any significant changes or improvement ??
*
If we are talking about framerate in gaming, 0% improvements

If we are talking about multitasking, video encoding then yes....

Hi all...
It's me again...
Gonna come here and update some information regarding my laptop...
Today went to Google Images and download some pictures...
This time when I download the first picture..
Google Chrome went not responding for 1min...
Afterwards it went smooth...
And in the afternoon I checked my Task Manager the Disk Reading Percentage went up to 100% for no reason...
There weren't any programme running above 2MB/s...
Most of them just stay around 0.1MB/s or 0MB/s....
I wonder if this is related to some programme pre-installed when I bought my Y50...
Is it possible that McAfee is causing these kind of problems???
(Normally I use AVG but since the McAfee is comes along with the laptop and it is a 3-year version....might consider using this Anti-Virus on the laptop..)
*
I would recommend uninstall McAfee. I do face this kind of issue as well with any system that I have McAfee installed. It has become my compulsory-things-to-do to uninstall McAfee. They will slow down your system but the scenario it happens might differ from system to system I guess (because of usage differences between individuals I would say).

You can also check which process is actually taking the resources. Go to Resources Monitor (accessible from your Task Manager) and check the process with high disk usage there. It should display every single process. Task Manager normally hides certain process (in Windows 7, McAfee processes are hidden. You need to click "Show Processes From All Users" to view it. I assume, Windows 8.1 will be the same)

Help....I'm flying back Sarawak today.....but I forgot to bring my power adapter.

Model: y510p single gpu...

Question: can I use other brands charger? I need to know if it's compatible.....I'm unsure whether my model is 120 Watt or 170 Watt......thanks....
*
single gpu should be 120w. as long as the output voltage is 20v (dont count me on voltage, please double confirm) and the plug can fit your laptop should be fine. but dont buy one too cheap if you plan to buy non oem one. too cheap means cheap components, one voltage spike and your laptop is gone...

Well I can't say that it is a bad laptop since it's serving me quite well...
Except for one time where I was doing my programming and the software goes not responding and I need to start everything again...
For some reason even though the laptop is using core i7...
The response time is quite low....
Maybe you can go to the Lenovo Outlet and give it a try on the laptop...
Try opening some files and try multitasking a while...
If you feel that it is nice just get this thing already...smile.gif
*
Do you still use McAfee???

Sometimes I wonder why they still use 5400RPM harddrive... battery life? cost? or simply there's no 2.5" 7200RPM hard disk out there (which, I don't think so...)???

128GB quite ok leh, my setup is 128gb + 1tb Hdd. all windows in SSD, and all games in 1tb. and i notice even if u put games in SSD, the game start up time doesnt really improve much (my case dota2), like no significant improvement at all, and i guess those loading time is CPU driven, so u can actually save alot of spaces for games
im using samsung 840.
*
I dont know in case of Dota2, but since it's an online game it's possible that most of the loading time require online interaction, not local storage interaction...

Guys. need some advise.

I'm currently using a Y580 with 1tb hssd but even so, dota 2's fps is around 30-40 only.

Any solution?

Still same even after I formatted it.
*
it will not change even if you are using ssd.

so im not the only one experiencing this?
*
Increasing your storage speed doesn't increase the FPS. It might speed up your loading time given your game is an offline games, online elements still tied up to internet speed.

Reduce the resolution or details if you want to speed up.

If I'm not mistaken the SSHD from Seagate should be 5400rpm. I'm trying to look for other brands that is 7200rpm.
*
maybe you want to try WD Black2 Dual Drive then? I dont know the price, should be cheaper than SSD I guess but heard quite good review on it. Not as fast as SSD but definitely faster than 5400RPM HDD....

I posted in an old thread earlier,

I am using Y580, my HDD is failing (still runs though!) so I replaced with it an SSD.

As I did not have any CD or DVD to burn the factory restore, I installed a new Windows OS download from digital river, authenticated the windows installation by phone and installed the drivers from the old harddrive recovery partition.

However, i just found out about this below:
http://vinhboy.com/blog/2013/11/25/how-to-...actory-restore/

Is there any difference or advantage if I use that method to restore factory default compared to a fresh OS install like I did? The main difference I see is that there is no Lenovo logo in Systems in Control Panel and the login screen.

I am would like to ask if I should bother installing the factory default over the fresh OS.

Thanks.
*
It's preference really. I prefer to do it the old way, fresh OS installation as it gives me more control on what I have in my laptop/desktop.

But, if you find yourself using the Lenovo utilities you probably will prefer the factory default restoration as all the utilities (some may refer them as bloatware) is installed.

Hi guys..been enjoying my y400 just over a year now...I think i updated mine to windows 8.1 maybe 6 months back?

And i would like to know is it possible to revert back to Windows 8?and what are the steps to do so?

Is it possible using the one touch recovery button? or in the "recovery" settings under "Refresh your pc"?

Thank you and any advice is much appreciated!  notworthy.gif
*
does it come with Windows 8 or Windows 8.1?

If if comes with Windows 8, I guess OKR should revert back to Win8... All Win8 users won't have installation media to Win8.1 so cannot recover straight to Win8.1 and has to go back to Win8 and update to Win8.1 through Windows Store.

So, yeah... If it comes with Win8, just use OKR.

Guys.. sorry to disturb, I can't find any thread related to S410p here. Can I know if any of u guys have issues with Lenovo's keyboard software? My ideapad have a weird problem with this, when i press the brightness key for my lcd.. i don't get any animation or notification on my screen that i am reducing/increasing my brightness & everytime i disable the touchpad using the shortcut key... my touchpad gets enabled back after my laptop went to sleep.
*
If your laptop doesn't come with Win8 and you do upgrade installation to Win8, I'd recommend you to re-format and do clean install the Win8/Win8.1. Upgrade installation does tend to have problem, and I haven't experience issue-free with upgrade installation since WinXP to be honest. Mind you that you might lose some Lenovo stuff like OKR.

If you have done that and problem persist, I'd recommend you to update all drivers from Lenovo website to the latest version. Like what gregyong said, Win8 does eff up big time but I blame both Microsoft and OEMs as well for not providing proper drivers leading to underwhelmed experience; still, personally I dont think this is as bad as Vista. I've had worse problem, bigger performance hit on Vista... but I can agree in some department, Win8 does worse than Vista (WiFi drivers if you need an example)

if none of that works, well... time to go back to Win7 I guess...

hi all sifu just bought the y50 one week , i wan to know whether y50 need a cooling pad or not cause recently play assasin creed black flag kinda hot , beside that i wan to know whether u all play all those high end games eg dota2 got select the high performace to game it ? if yes what the differenet between the balanced mode and the high performance mode ?? thx  smile.gif
*
This depends on games really... some AAA games like recent ubisoft's title are shitty ports (Assassin's Creed 4 is one of them) that seriously unoptimized, to the point that even i7-4770K and GTX680 is having hard time to run at high settings 1080p 60fps. On my Y580 i would just play it 720p at minimum settings. It still looks gorgeous on the 15" screen though...

Others that fair better, I usually play at 900p or 720p still, but at medium or high settings.

Old titles, I just run it 1080p with highest settings.
