IINM you can use up to $150 for $100 + $50 (deposit), but of course you can't get back your deposit after that as it need min $50.

If you want to get back, then just use the second method you proposed and also for peace of mind

u can top up octopus card at everywhere...7-11 etc......and u can use it to shopping as well... so wondering why u worry so much  ...its not like our stupid touch n go...failed project ...

the 4 star hotel wont be so rajin to charge on your 3rd person so you cna no worry about it .

Just came back from hk yesterday

nice place to visit but its really hot there now...ocean park is no no coz hot n too many people there,better go disneyland for 2 day pass really worth it n the new mistic point is awesome...avenue of star now have to walk about 10 minute from mtr station coz the construction....the peak tram n sky terrace is the best n the tactic is u must go there before 10am n wait for the sky terrace to open then get the best spot up there hehe.... 
hk airport is so big have to take train n bus to boarding gate 
forgot to return the octopus card n get refund...anybody want the card can pm me i have 2 card...one have 90++ crdt n others have 40++ ...2 for rm80 n if u also want simcard i also have 2 one2free microsimcard i give u for free coz u have to topup....

hk is the best place to visit    really want to go there next time in winter   ...enjoy urself guys

I went to Ocean Park on a Monday & Disney on a Tuesday last week. Both are packed with hordes of people. Ocean Park better in terms of more variety and space to breath. But remember to bring lots of water bottles, I went pokkai spending close to HKD100/- on mineral waters alone as it cost HKD20/- bucks for a 700ml bottle of water.
