No need root if your USB HD is in fat32 format. I have no problem connecting to my Samsung 1TB drive n no additional power input required. I purposedly have the USB HD in fat32 format to have greater flexibility. And I don't have any single files more than 4gb

I have 5 times in past 4 years. And each time warranty honour n I got free service. I have replace motherboard, replace battery, sim module, usb port . One time tablet even booting up with yellow triangle. I dont think I am the only user n quite several similar too. Note2 many users got motherboard replace foc due to hardbrick failed flashing
Depends how you present your case . Be polite n dont condemn the phone. I m honest n always tell them phone is rooted first. However be mentally prepared warranty is always void . Try your luck claiming.

Since your phone is rooted, backup all your stuffs using Titanium Backup ; SMS with SMS Backup & Restore. If you have whatsapp - copy the whatsapp folder to external SDcard. Or just Copy all your 3rd party stuffs in the viewable internal memory to PC and just copy back everything incase your stuffs get wipe off. You can take it another step further and flash back a stock rom using Odin in PC . Clean the flash counter if you have with triangleaway app before flashing the stock rom
Yes is troublesome - that is why I had never bother as I am ready to pay if so need to . I was told even going through these steps, if the tech wish to void warranty , he can still detect all these root/flashing in the hidden files in the phone. But I was so lucky the past several times that warranty was given FOC

Replacement of motherboard just took 2 days only. No symptoms of potential failure. It just went dead suddenly while he was taking a call. Phone cannot boot to even download mode n cannot be switched on

As name implied - SUDDEN death without any notice-lah!!! No symptoms of possible failure . Phone was always working fine and never even hang/freeze

If you suspect your motherboard is affected, go and have it change as is under warranty. Don't wait till warranty end

To some it is just like iphone 4s an upgrade from iphone 4
Many users perception are easily influenced by outlook/design/appearance
Expectations are high the S4 will be different but Samsung had chosen a proven safe route n to maintain their signature look. Time will tell whether such a strategy will still work

Boot phone to download mode again and connect to PC
Make sure there is no error message that phone is not detected or in the midst of installing the drivers
Only when you are certain, than only proceed to flash
Did you install first the Samsung USB phone drivers before that ? Google for "samsung usb phone drivers download" - plenty of sites you can download this. Install this first

girl83 : And to answer your question, these are usually wakelocks due to apps that has audio. Refer to note2 official thread page 1, post 5 . I have described my experience tacking this audiout issue : quote here again:
These are audiout wakelocks. You need to identify each app that uses audio and uninstall it . Than reinstall back each one by one. At each reinstall , allow phone to idle for 30 mins and than see whether you see such wakelocks appearing. Continue to do so until you find the culprit app
Some said it is also due to user selected sounds in settings - try disable such sounds except for calls, SMS,MMS, mails, whatsapp etc
It is strange such apps will only affect certain roms/or even phone models only
i have this serious wakelock audiout problem only in my Butterfly and i traced it to Vol+ app; removing it eliminate these audiout wakelock. It was irritating than , for every hour phone is idle, this wakelock shows 1 hour active
