Here's our brief hands-on with the device:

http://www.lowyat.net/2013/04/12/6955/hand...indows-phone-8/

Must say, I like the price and design although a lil bit too bare for users - no front-facing and no flash for its camera.

Got this phone yesterday and I realized something is missing... It has no Mail tile. Not the messaging tile, but the email Mail tile. The one with the Gmail symbol.

Does anybody have the same problem? or you guys have the tile?

Nokia Lumia 520 user guide states the phone has a Mail tile so I have no idea what is going on. Can't find the tile for download from marketplace also

you need to add the account 1st.
go to setting -> email+accounts -> add an account -> choose the type of account

after successfully adding the account, you will see an extra tile / icon on your live tile screen.
each account will have an extra tile which directly access the mail account.

i have 2 accounts added. works like charm

yes it's working already! thanks!

everything's good with lumia, only problem is there will be a learning curve lol

oh yes, sometimes synchronizing doesn't function well. Syncing new emails, new contacts from FB into People can take a while :/

Bought Lumia 520 at RM520, not bad at all with the price drool.gif
Only white available at the stall, since it can change the battery cover, doesn't matter for me what colour is the cover.
1920X1080 MP4 video can play at Lumia 520, quite impressive.
Ringtone is loud and clear.

the problem is merely related to the built quality of the phone. the casing & the camera/volume button is not as nice as 620.

620 oso low end phone. but the back cover quality is way better.

so... its not because of the phone itself. jus the cover and the button is not nice.

if you ask me, 620 is really quite good at that pricing. atleast the 150bucks extra compared to lumia520 is worth the quality

Bought this phone last week,

Pros - so far the best RM500+ range phones, OS is smooth, gps is good and camera is best at this price range believe.

Cons - battery used up quite fast, the auto brightness seem abit too dim. The camera button is hard to press.
and being new to these lumia windows experience, i can safely say that access to software is kind troublesome, especially wifi and stuff where you have to go in settings to set whereas a android is one swipe away from it.

overall the phone is one of the best low end phone out there provided that the user utilize the gps and camera which is their strength in lumia phone!

Me an ex-Lumia 800 user. I noticed WP never really done a good implementation with the brightness sensor. Can you try to disable the auto brightness and switch to medium? See if you get improved battery life.

the matte back shell gets dirty easily, i suggest you use anti-rust spray like WD40 or alcohol to clean it.

I bought the Lumia 520 for my son. Here's my view and it is not meant to influence anyone.

For the price, I would say the phone is excellent. Just nice for an entry level phone and for secondary schoolies like my son.

The feel is there, the touch screen is receptive and behaves as expected.

The Achilles heel lies in its wifi capability. It can connect to the router but the phone cannot open any internet addresses. I realised first when I noticed that my son's prepaid credit depleted. So, I connected to the wifi router but I am still not able to open any web page.

I rang the Nokia shop in 1 Utama and the sales guy kept telling that the wifi router is the culprit and that I am to get te Unifi guys to come and sort it out for me. I then called in the unifi contractor and he tested other devices I had including this notebook I'm using, galaxy note and one ipad. All were able to connect to the wifi spot and access the internet.

So I rang again the Nokia shop in 1 Utama and they told me to go to the Nokia service centre to sort it out. I was really pissed off coz since I bought the phone on 11 May 2013, I'm still not able to use the wifi connection.

Now, I regret for not buying a Samsung for my son. Seriously.
NO-Nokia for me and the rest of my family...forever!

Seriously.
NO-Nokia for me and the rest of my family...forever!

one thing about 520.. is

the cover quality is really really lacking till the point it affects the buttons on the side.
so far this the most common problem i get back from my buyers.

if can fork out a bit of extra money, i reckon my buyers to go for 620. since should be noticing a minor price drop on 620 in the market.

Hey folks, bought a lumia 520 for my dad and this is my/his experience about it.

Good:
1. Great build quailty.
2. Windows Phone 8 is a notable improvement over Windows Phone 7.8
- apps now open much faster
- better internet explorer experience ( pages now load faster; and disqus comments loading quicker)
3. Battery life is moderate; with his feature phone style usage lasting him 2 days.

Bad:
1. Due to the design of the phone, the unlock button, volume buttons might be hard to press. The shrap corners of the phone partially masks the button, and people with big hands wont be able to press it easily. (e.g my dad)
2. Gets hot very easily. (sweaty palms are not fun.)
3. App related, but whatsapp notification are often delayed, sometimes by 15 minutes or more.

I gotten it at RM 599 PLUS RM200 charge, BECAUSE the lady at One Utama Nokia Shop used my dad's NON EXISTANT data plan (READ: RM0.10/10kb) to create a new microsoft account AND download whatsapp . The manager incharge at that store was NOT friendly. He insinuated my parents were lying, that maxis does not charge data at such an expensive rate (look at the link provided) and when I demanded compensation, only returned RM50 for the whatsapp installation, AND asked his staff to delete whatsapp after that. Pretty pathetic manager and experience. Oh, and the lady there also said the lumia 620 had super sensitive touch screen (it does not). So yeah, she is a lying asswad too.

All this happened in a span of 30 minutes. And thank goodness maxis kept sending smses informing of the amount of data used. If not, i would have walked away none the wiser.

TLDR; Dont buy anything from One Utama Nokia.

Wrong way lah bro. The store gave him back RM50 but he still lost RM150 of credit cuz of those dumbasses.

You should go to the consumer tribunal or something man, RM200 is nothing to sneeze and these people clearly tried to con you out of your money. Even if it was unintentional at first, they clearly ramped it up to avoid paying compensation. Don't let them get away with it.

ive been using lumia 520 for a month i think maybe almost...first problem i encounter is the physical camera button is not working, but i already found out how to overcome the problem, just need to allign the button from the phone with the physical button on the case..now mine is working perfect(altho kinda hard to use it). Not a heavy user just light browsing and gaming, battery life is mediocre..but got 1 time the phone get warm(almost hot) even tho there no app running at he back. The OS is smooth and screen is good. Im working at construction site and always had my phone with me.Surprisingly there is not single scratch on the screen right now. The speaker sound is kinda thin but still loud at some point. The nokia map and nokia Drive here is a good sofware. The Qualcomm snapdragon S4 chip is really good..even tho running at 1ghz still can beat my samsung galaxy s2 on locating my location.its fast and almost 98% accurate..really helps me when i need to meet clients. I prefer this nokia over my S2 because it feels "stronger" and rarely hang. No compass but still i think this is the best bang for buck phone ( erm maybe lumia 620 better) because the difference in price is like rm 40 only. Im happy using it.

How to force your Nokia Lumia to use 3g/WCDMA only

Dail ##3282
Press ... then Settings
Network type -> 3G only
UTMS band -> automatic
Press Window home button to quick.

Now you can enjoy 3G/WCDMA network only on your Lumia 520.

eventually the issue will arise again. as its the cover / button quality problem
the quality built of the cover and the button is a not as good as 620.

520 might be cheap and value in terms of the hardward & software / OS that you will be getting.
the casing is neglected though...

I'm planning to get Lumia 520. After some extensive research online, I found there seems to be quite a few users complaining about phone getting very hot. According to them, the heat buildup within 5 minutes when using 3G web surfing or using the camera.

Any Lumia 520 user here experience the same situation?

Owh I see. Hopefully the telcos will somehow open their own apps market and allow us to purchase the apps by our telco's credit. That would be easier for many people. Just 1 sms and you can download those fun apps.

That is why I think it is a good idea if windows apps can also be purchased like that. I think it would make a very good business to the telco operators. Maybe if there is any celcom, maxis or digi staff here that read this may suggest this to their boss.

It will also increase the awareness and popularity of windows phone and this will lead to more windows phone users and then lead to more windows apps be developed by developers out there. rclxm9.gif

Yeah, I know. I just think if there is any other alternative aside from credit/debit card, it would be better. More flexible and it could benefit those who doesn't own any debit/credit card.

Btw, any interesting games that u may recommend for Lumia 520?

Could someone share his/her experience using the phone outdoor, especially using HERE Map and HERE Drive? According some reviews, the screen is reflective and not readable when using it under sunlight.

These 2 apps are my main considerations of considering this phone, besides a relative cheap smartphone.

I was wandering is it true that the screen protector shouldn't cover the top part of the phone?
The shop told me there's sensor up there and they need to cut the top part .
The part where the Nokia wording is.

hi, i was been using this phone for almost a month, so far i felt it was a pretty good phone as a basic phone, can't expected a lot for this entry phone. some more, it's my 2nd phone as company phone c/w data plan, so far sufficient for whatapps, email and surfing net. and most important, it easily hide behind my note 2 and can be attached as 1 phone~ rclxms.gif
Camera wise pretty decent, enough for me to take photos for my report. os wise pretty smooth, but apps, such as whatapps sometimes respond quite slow. this was my first win8 phone and i'm satisfy with it. thumbup.gif

1. PURE OFFLINE for both HERE maps and HERE drive. but do take note that HERE lens does take up data when using.
so far its works like charm for me in KL, PJ, subang area. never tested it at klang or other selangor area.

2. NOPE. but its not hard to find another standalone music app. there's actually dozens at store

Wow that Maxis promo is actually pretty decent. Even though you're getting jacked off by the RM66 monthly price (you can get comparable value from a UMI28 plan for a mere RM28 per month), together with the RM330 advanced payment rebate, you'll still save RM117 more than if you bought it off contract and then went with one of umobile's prepaid plans. Savings of RM4.88 per month biggrin.gif

My sentiments exactly!

The thing is i'm located in subang jaya and work place in kl sentral area. I've tried subang jaya dealers but all of them have no stock. Any idea if there's any MEPS dealers around kl area which have stock?

Also if you mind sharing, what are the available colours for the maxis promo? Tq

Can try Gurney Plaza. The Nokia shop or the Sun Global shop nearby.
Do check the price - on the high side.

Awesome. The one in Maxis Centre Gardens had that shutter problem. But the ones at 2 nokia centres i tried was working ok.

For maxis package almost all dealers out of stock. Orange mobile at aeon tmn maluri also only have 1 in stock.

Apparently maxis centre in KL Sentral informed me that the maxis promo units will only be in black & white. Anyone knows where to find the covers? Also will using non-ori covers affect the unit somehow?

Thanks

I tested Lumia 520 in Nokia store...turned out it has shutter issue. Ahnien is correct; the alignment issue will come back even after you re-aligned it again. I don't understand why Nokia dropped their ball on this one. BTW, I proceed to purchase an Asha 501....flawless although it is a much lower end phone.

Hi all,

I have a quick question to ask.

My lumia 520 this morning gets warm around the camera there. and it continue for a few hours until the phone died (battery flat).
I'm not sure what caused it.
And my battery life is poor. The review around the net seems to be praising this phone for its battery life.

If i send it to nokia service centre to check, how much will they charge me?

I just bought Lumia 520 yesterday just was curious to ask that how long does your phones battery last for? I used it for 1 hour or so with WiFi then 1 hour of calls and other times for like 5 hours just observing the features and it lasted for 25 hours is it ok?

ya. what i mean is, i can't search for location to navigate. so, how to use that map if its offline?
do u use data for location search & then turn it off?

big big location no need internet connection,
but if you are looking for something like

kedai perabot ramasamy, no1246, jalan sesame, kota baru..

then u require internet for search the address and pinpoint only,
not for navigation, because the here drive will determine it offline..

u can turn off data after u search if u want..

srcondly it uses data when u click the traffic button,
it will display traffic conditon at the moment, but this function is useless in malaysia since it is not updated like waze

my wife has been using it for few months. great phone for her. those apps u mentioned should work fine. youtube also.

as added bonus, the cam and gps app is also good.

no problem so far, except the issue with the side buttons sometimes are pushed inside the cover & can't be use. but when properly installed it's no more an issue. i dont like the search (bing) button on the right. always push it by mistake (coz normally its the back button on the right)

So far I only experienced minimal lag when browsing the internet.

The phone is quite smooth but not silky smooth as the iPhone.

Seriously, L520's camera does not perform well in low-light conditions.

Get at least L720 if you want a good camera.

But other than that, L520 specs are quite good for a cheap phone, such as good battery life (it charges fast too), design, tough display (although it is not Gorilla Glass) and 800 x 480 IPS display.

Anyway, below are some pictures taken with L520 in low-light conditions as you requested.

Have you set "Highest connection speed" to 3G in "mobile network" settings ?

Also try to look in Settings > access point.

AFAIK, there is no Opera Browser for WP8 yet, but there are some alternative browsers that you can try such as UC Browser and Maxthon.

then check and update items like Extras + Info, etc

and fm radio should be found under Music + Video

To all L520 users, you can now also record video in 24/25fps instead of just the default 30fps by using Nokia Camera.

Not really IMO.

Some apps are not yet available on WP8, and some are still in BETA or half-baked.

It is OK for WhatsApp and light browsing.

There is no official YouTube app from Google on WP8, but there is a YouTube app made by Microsoft though.

Most if not all Nokia stores already have stock. They've just chosen to not display it because it could technically steal sales from the L520 because it's got better specs and L520 stocks are the largest for the Lumias (due to overwhelming demand for it over the pricier phones). That's just my theory though tongue.gif

There is currently none. That's why I said someone needs to create it.

As for L520 price, you can get it for as low as MYR 399.

Thinking to get l520 as my GPS phone, just GPS only. Wondering how's the battery consumption ?
Has anyone tried it without sim before? When accessing GPS.
I would like to use it when traveling outside the country and I guess with l520, an upgrade to here+ is a must, so it's either Nokia with here+ or l520 upgrade here+. Hmm...
