"Very, very difficult (possibly impossible?) to open the device without damaging the rear case. This makes every component extremely difficult to replace." - iFixit

"The display assembly cannot be replaced without removing the rear case—this will make the most common repair, a damaged screen, nearly impossible." - iFixit

Does this mean most probable HTC will going for 1 on 1 change if there's any problem happen to our unit... Hmmm  hmm.gif

Rationally speaking, this is going to cause massive headaches for their service centers. Sales stock needs to be carefully weighed against RMA stocks, and they had better ensure that QC is good enough to drive it down below 1% faults.

This means that for those who dropped the device and cracked their screens, how is the user going to have it replaced, EVEN if they wanted to PAY for a replacement screen???

even the glass not replacable?

Needs a heat gun to loosen it and a suction cup to remove it. I don't know if that's actually good engineering serviceability practice. How will you secure the screen again?

HTC must have enough replacement for RMA purpose.
with the phone seems like very difficult to NOT DESIGNED TO BE repaired.
one-to-one exchange is the only way.
HTC Malaysia better dont screw up.
Imagine phone send for warranty but got no replacement stock. people gonna rage.

There, corrected that for you.

LOL.

this will make future owner thinks twice.
premium feel but cannot repair.

I think i certainly will not get this because of this.

technically if ur phone warranty period is over, then game over coz the phone is unrepairable.

But it's PREMIUM ALUMINIUM !!!! Feel it !!!!! You can get an orgasm just touching it !!!!

Why blinkfeed? Aren't there mods or apps that can do the same? Or an extract of the Blinkfeed apk when it arrives?

Zoe, I don't know, if hardware is powerful enough, anything can be emulated in software.

I conjecture that the difficulty in disassembly likewise applies to assembly ?

I recall reading some articles writing that it took 200mins to create one from start to finish due to the fine craftsmanship? In which case they'd need A LOT of machining sets.

6000 x 200mins = 1,200,000mins, what, about 3 years?

Assuming they ramp up to 100 sets every 200mins, they'd still need 60x200min = 12,000mins, which is about 8 days.

It can't be that they've only gotten 6000 sets of stock just enough for Taiwan, as they launched the product 1 month ago. So .... hmm.gif

Unless they get some serious capacity ramp up or process simplification, the prognosis is not rosy.

Perhaps as a metaphor, how long does it take 1 woman to get dressed for a nice dinner vs how long 1 man takes to get dressed for the same dinner? laugh.gif

BTW I think we have rationalized quite a bit tonight. Let the would be owners deal with the implications. Again I say it's a fine device, but I'll pass on the pleasure of owning one.

On a different note, any news on Zoe portability? We still don't know if it's tied to hardware yet, do we?

Thank you kind sir. I think we should civilize the uncivil. I hope we are not anachronisms. Then again I like the Society for Creative Anachronism.

About Zoe:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoetrope

Zoe is the contraction of Zoetrope, which is a series of moving pictures. So, since Zoe seems to be linked to the gallery function, I am not sure of its real utility.

http://blog.htc.com/2013/03/htc-one-zoe-camera/
When’s the best time to use Zoe? Whenever you want to to capture the perfect photo. After all, you don’t want to miss the moment if you aren’t quick enough (or perhaps just too fast) to capture the best part of the shot. HTC Zoe turns your smartphone into a living photo gallery of memories and interests. After all, capturing a moment takes more than a single image.

http://www.htc.com/www/smartphones/htc-one/#how-tos
Bring your gallery to life with HTC Zoe
Inject life and emotion into your memories using HTC Zoe. Then, share them right away on HTC Share.

Would unlocking the bootloader or S-on/S-off thing void warranty like what Sony practices? That said, I haven't read enough about S-on/S-off except to know it's an unnecessary pain.

This is HTC official statement ( some excerpts) about unlocking bootloader:

It is our responsibility to caution you that not all claims resulting or caused by or from the unlocking of the bootloader may be covered under warranty.

Our devices have been designed with our hardware and software specifications in mind and unlocking the bootloader will change the software and may cause unexpected side effects. It is impossible for HTC to ensure the proper functioning of your device after this. In the worst case scenario, it is possible that your device may be physically damaged due to overheating or the behavior of your device might be altered including, but not limited to, hearing aid compatibility (HAC) and specific absorption rate (SAR) values.

Some content on your device may also be invalidated and cannot be accessed any more because of invalid DRM security keys. This includes content that you may have purchased through a 3rd party vendor and through HTC. Furthermore, although you will still be able to receive updates to your device via FOTA (“firmware over the air”), we do not guarantee that updating your device via FOTA will not render your device unusable. Please understand that you will not be able to return your device to the original state and going forward your device may not be held covered under the warranty for all claims resulting from the unlocking of the bootloader. HTC bears no responsibility if your device is no longer usable afterwards.

It simply means , you do at your own risk and pray hard any claims might be entertained by HTC and its at HTC discretion
