Motley kernel checking in. Anyone?
*
I am still with Motley's stable. Battery life is good, getting minimum 1 hour SOT per 20% on heavy wifi usage . If I am doing things like mostly reading articles on Pocket or etc, can see it jump to 1 hour and a half or more with 20%. I have not tried the recently updated kernels by other devs since I am happy with the battery life and performance with CM M2, no slow down/lags even when I compare it with a friend's stock N4. Pretty happy with the current setup, so I only do the occasional xda checking to check whether M3 CM is out or new motley's stable.

me twoo.

maybe i should greenify all the app inside my phone.
*

that'll drain your battery more. Use BBS and Greenify those apps that are holding partial wakelocks
QUOTE(illuminarias @ Mar 29 2013, 03:28 PM)
Should be? Custom kernels have the ability to change your screen colors. Useful for fixing the so called "bland washed out" screen on the N4. Personally it looks fine to me lol
*

after tweaking the colour with motley's settings, this was way back, when molesarecoming of PA first started tweaking, I noticed that there are actually grey background in G+ app. Definitely liking the tweaked colour, they look richer.

I am currently on xylon. Tried dirty flash to xylon just now and notice I got FC with my gmail.

By the way, if we dirty flash do we need to flash gapps again after flashing the updated ROM?

Pls help. Thanks
*

depends on the ROM, CM and other CM based ROMs that have addon.d support, you don't have to flash gapps again, for other ROMs that don't have addon.d script feature, you'll have to. BTW, you can try to fix permission if there are FCs.

My device reboot few times after trying adjusting the CPU voltages. After few reboot only then it settles down
*

perhaps some of the voltages are a bit too low. Use scaling test to check the stability of the voltages.

not all chips are equal, if you are getting random reboot, the UV might be a bit too low for yours.

falcon have my vote too. A very polished experience I'd say. Used to love Tweakdeck.

QUOTE(iceman31 @ Apr 2 2013, 09:35 PM)
battery life are depending on how you use ur phone .

but changing kernel do give alot of impact.

franco is good, motley is good, trinity is good too. not to be bias to a particular kernel. you should try one by one and see which one suits you smile.gif
*
QUOTE(Calex @ Apr 2 2013, 10:43 PM)
To simplify, all kernels aim to get the best balance out of battery and performance.

But for example, one kernel trades speed for more battery, while the other does the opposite.

Also, some kernels have different default color settings, one might look warmer, the other more colder or more saturated etc, some even offer the option of tuning the colors.
*

this! I used to switch kernels every weekend when I first got the phone, and I can honestly say that most of them are roughly the same in terms of SOT(this was back then) . Why I prefer motley's, I can tweak most of the settings like screen colour via userinit.d, and detailed changelogs. I have a preference for detailed changelogs. in the end, just go for a kernel that you feel comfortable with, they all strive for good battery life. The only changes I made on motley's is to tweak the colours, everything else is on default settings.

Surprised to see that not many people over here are using aokp.

But still cm is rock solid for me and yet to try aokp. Started to be lazy to flash back everything even titanium is really convenient.
*

I am still on CM M2, a friend is using AOKP b6, the extra tweaks in AOKP are nice, but I don't really use them, so I have not jumped to AOKP as daily driver. Can vouch for CM M2, rock solid.

Well at first glance in my exp using CM 10.1 M2 not much setting can be done like my previous exp using xylon. quite smooth.
*

yeap, feature wise, other distributions have more features than CM. CM is AOSP like with some added features. AOKP/Xylon/Carbon/PA or other distributions provide more features out of the box.

i lazy flash, stable than just use only... hahaha
*

my flashing period has ended, it lasted for two or three weeks when I first got the N4. I have settled down with CM+motley thumbup.gif

Just want to ask, just recently flash CM 10.1 M2. So to flash motlet, just dirty flash & flash motley right ? no need to revert back to stock kernel only then flash (Franco case)
*

yeap, just dirty flash cm m2 again, and then flash motley.

with CM, you only need to flash gapps once(cm have addon.d backup function), so if you are switching kernels and currently running CM, just dirty flash CM again, and flash the new kernel. your gapps would be automatically backed up.

QUOTE(Decky @ Apr 3 2013, 06:59 PM)
Is that good?

My whole family uses the iPhone 4S and I see that they have to charge their devices halfway through the day. That's a concern to me because I usually spend my time in college where I'm unable to charge my phone (because my classmates occupy all the charging ports with their iPhones)

I guess you can say that my usage in college is basically the occasional text message, whatsapp, twitter and FB with some web browsing. I don't watch alot of videos. I plan to use the phone as an MP3 replacement though.

Is a powerbank reliable?
*

regarding the cost of device. buying off contract vs on contract comes down to your usage. original LG malaysia set is available at 1.5k now (search at lelong). I find prepaid plans by various telcos to be more flexible than Digi's postpaid. with RM48 Umobile, you'll get 100 mins calls to any network + 2GB of high speed data, after which it'll be throttled. I am using RM28 per month, 100 mins + 500mb data, so far, it is adequate for me. so RM28 or RM48 monthly cost, it is still affordable for a student.

my advice is to calculate your rough usage and compare the various available plans with your usage.

regarding battery life, I can survive a day of class in uni (social networks, viewing notes etc). if it is not enough for your usage, get a powerbank. they are always handy.

which motley kernal u using?
*

still at exp b40. the newer versions add in touch sensitivity option and faux's audio enhancement option for the speaker. I am still at b40 since there are not much changes to the performance parts of the kernel and I don't use the newer touch sensitivity and audio tweaks. (there have been some setups for these new options in the thread that you can try if you want)

Would probably update if there is a newer version after b49, or when CM releases M3.

polarzbearz ultra crystal is a fingerprint magnet. it is quite hard to make it less fingerprint magnet unless you are will to sacrifice clarity (matte sp). the naked glass is definitely better

If speed is the most important thing that you look for in a browser, I'd say give Naked Browser a try.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?...ev.nakedbrowser

It is very spartan in UI, and there is a bit of learning to do on how to use it, but it is the fastest browser I have used. It even works better than stock webkit browser in my aging Desire Z.

This + send to my computer + chrome to phone + LastPass bookmarklets is enough for me to move over from Chrome

Thanks you guys for the feedback.

Luckily the person who pickup it up is super duper kind to return me the phone ... oh god !!! It was a super nice aunty from the restaurant ! Will need to go back there more often to eat and tip her !

Will do more research on the few of the apps you guys mention and give it a try.
Sorry, I am lost here, what are you are you guys planning to group purchase ?
*

time to install a good anti theft app. I have had a similar experience and Cerberus performed brilliantly.

short story, accidentally left my phone somewhere quite public, noticed the phone went missing, triggered the lock command via Cerberus website. triggered GPS remotely and pinpoint the rough location, sent the take picture remotely command (this allowwed me to narrow down the area), and lastly when I was around the area, I sent the ring alarm command and managed to find my Desire Z.

paid one time license fee of $4(RM12.23 by today ER) for the app, and managed to find my Desire Z that costed me RM999. That is just 1.2% of the value of my Desire Z and you can use the same license up for five devices simultaneously (still have it on the Desire Z, and now on my N4)

the most noteworthy feature of Cerberus is if you have an unlocked bootloader, you can flash the Cerberus zip file into /system, so that it'll survive a factory reset, so you can still activate it even if the thief do a factory reset, granted that he is not savvy enough to flash a full factory image. this is one of the benefits of having an unlocked bootloader, if you are rooted, you can use Bootunlocker app to relock your bootloader on the fly.

you can read Android Police's security apps review here
[Mobile Security App Shootout, Final Roundup] Out Of A Sea Of Apps, Just One Emerges As A Clear Winner In Keeping Your Device Safe

Android Police's full review of Cerberus here
[Mobile Security App Shootout, Part 3] Cerberus Faithfully Guards All Your Devices With Ease

flashable zip of Cerberus available here Cerberus Flashable Zip - Download

IINM there is a two weeks trial period for the app, so you can try it out first before purchasing. Remember to enable the options like device administrator, and remote wipe feature if everything else fails.

you can get it from the Play Store too, but I'd recommend getting the flashable zip since it'll push it to /system. personally I am using the hidden/disguised version of the flashable zip.

Good luck, hope this'll help someone too icon_rolleyes.gif

azrash interesting app.. Most will he rendered useless after the device performed factory reset. The license is tied up alongside with Google account? Cause might be installing in different devices with different email.
*

it is not tied to your Google Play account, it will be tied to an email that you provide.

so say you want to flash/install it in your sister's phone, just open the Cerberus app and login using the credentials that you have used when you signed up, and tick the options that you want to enable, and you are all set.

Interesting. Will give it a look soon as I've previously indirectly experienced (not me but my partner) loss of device (stolen or pickpocketed, no idea rclxub.gif) and it really sucks cry.gif cry.gif

One thing I'm curious about tho, will it cause battery drains or kernel wakelocks? Given the nature of the app.
*

very minimal, only a few seconds of partial wakelocks frommy oobservation. It'll hold a longer wakelock only when you have triggered the tracking mode, and other commands etc.

azrash Just checked out Cerberus and indeed an impressive apps. Gotta test it a few days to check for battery usage and purchase it if no heavy draining.

thumbup.gif
*

there are other nifty features like take a picture without the screen showing anything, and also send a text message that can be played as a speech. During my initial test, I also tried the remote wipe feature on my Desire Z and it did wiped the phone and Cerberus is still active.

There is no noticeable battery drain when the app is notttriggered from my observations via BBS.

The UI of the app is however very spartan. I have emailed the developer the other day and the next version would support CM's addon.d backup script so you don't have to reflash the Cerberus zip file when updating your CM ROM. you can already do this now by changing some values In the gapps script.

QUOTE(polarzbearz @ Apr 6 2013, 05:02 PM)
I don't think it'll survive flashing as flashing a ROM will overwrite system.img; but surviving factory resets / wiping data wouldn't be a problem. (I have yet personally tested it tho, now only testing if there's any battery drain)
*

that is correct, hence my previous advice in the previous thread about using bootunlocker to lock the bootloader if you are rooted. The thief would need to wipe your device if they want to unlock it, so it'll at least keep your personal info relatively safe.

how much is a nexus 4 now?

i wonder if i should just wait til the next nexus phone to decide. should be released during google I/O in may...
*

most likely they'll announce Nexus 7 only at IO.

Nexus phones are normally announced in Q4. Both N4 and Gnex were announced in October and available for purchase in November. Nexus S was announced and available in December.

But who knows what Google is thinking.

*

Hmm I highly doubt this. If the app is not triggered or activated remotely, it will just stay 'asleep' like it is not installed.

Pretty sure others can corroborate this, I have used it since the Desire Z. Are you sure it is draining your battery while it is inactive? Check your BBS.

Hi bro, also another question which I don't understand.

Mine is a 16GB. How do I corelate Total space 13GB but my Available space is only less than 2GB?

I do not have much stuff inside my n4...
*
This could be because of many things, might be your nandroid backups too. What I'd suggest is to install storage analyser, enablethe root feature, and let it scan /data ppartition. You'll find out what have been using your storage. Disk Usage is another app that does the same thing

What i mean is location access, when i remote to locate the device, location access doesn't turn on, the phone just searching for gps and i cannot locate my phone. They said Sorry, Cerberus could not find your device location. If location access is turn on then they can find my device.

But if i login using website i can locate my phone without enabling location access, hehe.. smile.gif
*

so if you use the Cerberus remote app, it won't work, but it'll work just fine with the Cerberus website? If that is the case, email the developer. They'llddefinitely response to your email. They are beta testing a new release now.
