Anybody in Sabah heard of celcom timur?

I live in Tawau Sabah Post Code 91000 and my house is currently not in the unifi service area.
Technicians recently pulled fiber cable to the front of my house although the cable is not the usual black
with a yellow stripe but black with a blue stripe. The people pulling the fiber told me it was for celcom timur
which I have never heard of before and just yesterday they installed a Fiber Distribution Box on the pole outside my house.

I googled celcom timur but their website "www.ctsabah.com.my" is inaccessible.

Anybody has any info on this outfit? It would be cool to know what packages and pricing they offer for their fiber service.

Damn, just found out from a friend who told me to avoid celcom timur fiber service in favor of unifi because celcom timur's service is subject to bandwidth caps.(quota)

Are these on every pole of just one or two every few km?

What are the nearby buildings? Commercial shophouses/factory lots, business centres or just homes directly in front of them?

They seem like termination points for wiring up mobile base stations or providing end to end leased lines for commercial sites such as banks etc.

Celcom Timur is a joint venture between Sabah government and Celcom in East Malaysia which deals with laying dark fibre for leasing. They're not into providing internet and ISP business but leased their dark fibres to other ISPs/telcos who needs them for backhaul.

If you're interested to know more why not contact them by phone directly or give them a visit?

Celcom Timur Sabah

Address:
Lot 100, Block K, Alamesra, Lor Plaza Permai 3 & Sulaman-Coastal Highway, Alamesra, 88400 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia

Contact: +60 88-484 999

In Sarawak, they've a sister company called Sacofa instead.

https://www.sacofa.com.my/web/

Nothing on their site saying that they're providing internet services except fibre leasing and backhaul links for mobile base stations.

These pictures are from a housing estate. Notice that there is a Celcom Timur D.P. box every five houses or so along this
particular street which fronts roughly 40 houses. There are 4 other shorter streets with roughly 10 houses each.

I see a mobile transmission tower at the end of the road here. Could it be that it's leading to that location?

Rarely, telco place overlapping infrastructure for consumer based internet services unless demand is really high. Even landed homes in Klang Valley with very high demand, you don't see more than 1 company which is already providing FDP boxes on poles will have another rival company placing another right next to it. They are always exclusive to only 1 fixed provider. If another company wants to provide internet plans, they'll just rent ports inside TM's FDP/racks at the exchange office for their own use.

These FDPs might be fibre closure boxes for branching and organizing splices.
One thing is for sure, if UniFi already have existing HSBB facility why would another sister company such as Celcom would lease theirs for consumer home broadband services?

Try giving CTS a call and ask.

The transmission tower you see off in the distance is located on the neighboring Kukusan army camp and has been installed since 2009 if I am not mistaken. It forms part of a communications array which supports
a radar surveillance system operated by the joint task force (ATB) which was supposedly donated by the U.S. government to detect sea borne threats from as far as 70 K.M. away. Link to News Story about this Radar

All TM internet connections Unifi and streamyx have been offline here in Tawau, Sabah since a couple of hours ago,
I heard the outage has also affected the whole of neighboring Lahad Datu town.

Having similar issues here in Tawau, Sabah since late morning/noon today.

Slow downloads and buffering when watching youtube.

I am on a 800mbps Turbo-ed connection.

user posted image

Did a speed test using speedtest.net and getting less than 1 mbps while upload is normal at 165 mbps.

user posted image

When using http://speedtest.tm.com.my/ I get 757 mbps download and 195.5 mbps upload.

I have long suspected that http://speedtest.tm.com.my/ is rigged to give better than real world test results and this proves it.

I have reported the issue to TM support.

Well, TM Speedtest is using Ookla too and doesn't seem to be rigged. It just happens some connections within Malaysia are still okay. I can get good results with TIME Speedtest and fast.com that matches TM Speedtest now even though other speedtest and downloads are less than 50Mbps.

Even two servers in Singapore give way different results

Can actually prove that TM Speedtest is accurate/not rigged. It shows 90+Mbps result if I purposely cap the connection between PC and router to 100Mbps. It just only test connection to KL server and does not represent the speed obtainable when connecting to other countries. For that we have to use speedtest servers located in other countries.

I did all tests on speedtest.net with local servers located both in K.L. and Sabah and got less than 1 mbps down.
Compared to the TM Speedtest site located in KL, which showed my speed at 757 mbps.

I admit that saying their results are rigged may have been overstating it but at the least, their results do not accurately represent what their customers will experience in actual use even if they just browse local sites. Most internet users will probably access foreign sites as well.

If they wanted to give their customers accurate measurements of service quality, they would make their site included tests from foreign servers as well, seeing as it is powered by ookla anyway. sad.gif

why is my router/modem LOS red light blinking? my internet is down. just apply not up to 2 weeks already got problem

L.O.S. means Loss Of Signal which means that the optical signal through the fiber cable has been lost or degraded. It could be a problem with the fiber cable coming in to your house and plugged in to your fiber modem.

If you have moved or relocated your fiber modem since installation you might have dislodged the fiber connector on your modem. If so just try and re-seat it by removing the fiber connector from your modem and reconnecting it making sure that the connection is secure.

If you still have the red LOS led, then check all along the fiber cable and make sure that the cable does not have sharp bends especially when going around corners. The recommended bend radius is more than 30mm for a 3mm length of cable. If you do find that the fiber cable has become bent by roughly more than say 80 degrees then straighten it out and secure it carefully with cable clips.

If you do not find any likely kinks or bends which might be affecting your signal then you need to call TM because it might be a problem with the drop cable outside your house or even the connector at the D.P. or white box on the pole outside or even a problem further upstream.

Good luck

Here we go again. Less than 1 mbps download and 170++mbps upload when testing on speedtest.net.

Even http://speedtest.tm.com.my/ is giving me the same crappy result.

At least when i called the hotline to complain this time, the support drone admitted up front that there was a problem at my service area and offered to open a report right away instead of telling me to wait and see.

Hope this is not going to be a recurring problem.
