Nothing is perfect. I suggest the following on your main host system assuming you're running windows
1. Install Avast (because its a good all-rounder)
2. Standard windows firewall
3. Never use the Windows as a user with administrative rights unless you're sure the program you're going to install is virus free.
4. Turn auto-run off for usb, dvd-roms, etc...
5. Use Virtual Box or Hyper-V to create specific purpose windows OS.

Make a guest OS specific for surfing and downloading running AVG. Don't test your software here.

Make a guest OS for testing of software which runs a Avira.

Make yet another specific box for important stuff like banking. Install Comodo firewall/defense+ on it. Comodo has AV too. Not sure how good but it doesn't matter because you're not going to install any programs here nor surf.

You'll only need the host for hardware intensive stuff like gaming, movies, and 3D modelling.

I'm using Avast! + Malwarebytes,
although not recommended if you have
cracked software or games
