Reporting on two game sessions that went on for the last two days at Toybox where I wasn't a participant except for one game. Came too late to join the other games.

14/07

When I arrived, 4 gamers were already in the midst of a busy Ra session. Even from outside, I can hear people shouting "RA!". This was possibly the third or fourth bidding game that I have already seen and it seems to be one of the better ways to eliminate the "lucky" dice roll element of board games.

The game is played over a period of 3 kingdoms of ancient Egypt and once the final Ra tile is placed, the tiles are wiped from the board. Each kingdom period also ends when all players have finished up their bidding coins. There were certainly a lot of strategy in play and one of the strategy that was immediately identified was the "chicken" method where you just play out to be the last guy remaining on the board and hope to sweep a lot of good tiles.

After that, we adjourn to dinner before returning to the shop. As there 6 of us by now, we decided to split the group into two. One group went on to play Railroad Tycoon brought by Marcus while the other group (includes me) went on to try out another Egyptian game, Amun Re.

Amun Re was another bidding game but this time we had to make sacrifices to Amun Re to generate our money. The game was split into two kingdom - Old Kingdom and New Kingdom. It was certainly mind grappling to see what strategies we can employ. Do we build everything in the Old Kingdom or do we start building on our points in the New Kingdom after everyone has developed some of the provinces up for grabs. I went ahead and tried to garner as much points in the first round of scoring (which is after the Old Kingdom) and try to just sustain myself in the New Kingdom with a few "power" cards that gave me bonuses. That worked out well as my lead was too huge to be overtaken by the end of the New Kingdom. I felt that this game was better than Ra and all of us have agreed to take on the game on another day.

After that, I walked over to the Railroad Tycoon table and "WOW!". The board was massive and I was pretty much awe-struck. I felt like I was Lex Luthor in the Superman movie except it is not really 3D terrain and there were no moving trains. I was not there at the start of the game so I can't comment much but the feedback I got was that Railroad Tycoon is a very, very interesting game. I am tempted to buy one and put it at the shop smile.gif

15/07

Was busy WoWing (World of Warcraft online) at home so I stepped into the shop late. By then, we already had 5 gamers in the middle of Amun Re. Looks like there were more Egyptian voodoo going on that time at Toybox. 5-player definitely was more interesting than 3-player that we had the previous night. As this time, most of the provinces were developed and players were trying to get to the best pieces while trying to fulfill the requirements of "power" cards to give them more points in the end. The winner was finally Hong, who followed the same strategy as I did yesterday - amassing more points in the Old Kingdom.

After this game, I was told that another group tried Fury of Dracula earlier in the day. Was not sure how that went but I won't be surprised if they have been bitten smile.gif

After Amun Re, some of them decided to leave for Saturday night plans while 5 of us stayed behind to play somemore games. 3 of them was going to try Caribbean and Amazonas so I opted out just to teach them how to play the games. Caribbean was fun at the start but it kinda went into a draggy mode in the end. That was one of the comment as they find that they were almost bidding for the same ships at the end. I did point out a few different strategies they could have tried which would not have paid off anyway because someone moved another ship away smile.gif

They were happier with Amazonas and the 18 rounds flew by pretty quickly. Some of them forgot about their secret mission cards but luckily they still managed to complete them right before the game ended.

All in all, it was another two great days of gaming and we might just drop by again tomorrow for one more session.

In conjunction with Halloween on October 31, Toybox is starting our celebration early with the hunt for the perfect dracula. Your skills as a dracula will be pitted against 4 hunters from Toybox in the game, Fury of Dracula. Winning the game against us will put you in the running for the final battle on Halloween. As a token of your hardwork, the best Dracula also stands to win a little something from us in line with the Halloween theme. Does Jack Skellington sound familiar to you?

Then you will want to get your hands on these gashapons...

The challenges for our four elite hunters will begin in August leading up to a final battle in October. To arrange for your challenge, email Nicholas Leong at n.leong@toybox.com.my or call me at 012-2675003.

No idea what Fury of Dracula is? Not a problem, just drop by Toybox before Halloween and say these magic words "I want to learn how to be a dracula" and you will be given a free tutorial on the game.

Let the hunt begin.

ps: Our Halloween event will be anounced on a later date.

Toybox is pleased to announce three new games into our expanding library!

Railroad Tycoon
Revisit the early days of the Age of Steam as you begin with a locomotive (the venerable John Bull, the first locomotive to run in North America) and a vision (your Tycoon "mission" card). From there, build your budding railroad network into a vast empire. Connect New York to Chicago, earn the most money, develop bigger and faster locomotives and maybe even span North America and build the Transcontinental Railway!

Lost Cities
In Lost Cities, another card game in the Kosmos two-player series, the object is to mount profitable expeditions to one or more of the five different lost cities. Card play is quite straightforward, with a few agonizing moments sprinkled through what is mostly a fast-moving game. If you start a given expedition, you'd better make some progress in it, or it'll score you negative points. If you can make a lot of progress, you'll score quite well. After three rounds, the highest total score takes the day.

Bang!
The outlaws hunt the Sheriff. The Sheriff hunts the Outlaws. The Renegade plots secretely, ready to take one side or the other. Bullets fly. Who among the gunmen is a Deputy, ready to sacrifice himself for the Sheriff? And who is a merciless Outlaw, willing to kill him? If you want to find out, just draw (your cards)!

Come and test them out today!

We have an active crowd playing Pokemon every Sunday. We run a weekly league over there. So yeah, there are quite a number of players selling and trading cards at my shop.

If you are there on a Sunday, ask for Alex - our resident Pokemon expert.

Hmmm.. how about fantasy themed board games? We were thinking of warcraft, but afraid it might be too long winded  unsure.gif
*
Most fantasy games are rather long in nature because of the complexity of the games..

World of Warcraft is ermm..long and its not really that fantastic of a game..

Recommended for me would be A Game of Thrones or Shadows over Camelot.

Of course, if you are looking at like a game thats 3 hours long, you can't go wrong with War of the Ring.

We did get some new fantasy games over the week, and one caught my attention - Runebound.

When is your GF's birthday? Maybe you can drop by Toybox to take a look at some of these games before making a decision smile.gif

I dunno if you guys have these in stock. Cool boardgames:

RISK 2210 AD (avg 3 hrs)
RISK Godstorm (avg 3 hrs)
Age of Mythology (avg 2 hrs)
Civilization (this is superb, hours and hours of gameplay).'

Zio any change of buying AOM and Civilization new set from you?
*
I'll check and get back to you soonest.

edit at 6pm: Checked with my distributor, he doesn't bring these two games in.

If you like the theme of the games, better games than those would be:

Civilization - Tempus or Antike
Age of Mythology - Heroscape

Haha, but if you like it because of its association with the PC game, cant help you there man.

1. Dungeons and Dragons is a different genre compared to Euro designer board games. It is more like miniature RPG.

2. Mage Knights and the huge dragons with dials belong to a genre of what we call Collectible Miniature Games (CMG). Different from Miniatures (the ones you paint yourself).

3. We don't carry D&D or any CMG at the moment. We will be bringing in miniatures from Rackham in the near future so watch out for that. The miniatures are really beautiful and its metal. We will be organising demos, paint workshops etc to help people get into the hobby.

4. Memoir 44 base set is RM219. I don't have the expansion pricing with me yet.

As for your Magic hobby, we are considering starting draft nights at our place. Let me know if you have friends interested.

edit: Memoir Main board RM219, Expansions (Terrain + Russian Army + Winter/Desert) RM219, Pacific Theatre expansion RM139

So complete set of Memoir '44 is RM577
