Ive received some PM about buying guitars lately, all ask the same question

"How i buy my first guitar"

buying your first guitar is not easy, my first guitar was an el cheapo given by a drummer , i paid him RM50 out of courtesy. how much that guitar is really worth i dont know but i doubt it will be a lot. i made a few mistakes, first i didnt know it was a classical and used nickle strings on it, needless to say during the time i was playing that axe it was problematic.

fortunately the guitar market improved very much well since then, for a mere 300-400 bucks today you can get a number of OEM brands and there are a lot of sellers today compared to those i knew existed. (bentley n guitar store).

firstly,

to Kapok or not to Kapok

for those that dont know, kapok is an indonesian budget brand of guitars often made of some man made form of wood (i think its plastic) with super high action and strings that can pierce your fingers. the guitars cost about RM80-150.

kapoks hold very dear influence to a lot of musicians in malaysia because its cheap, but its an ill advised move. kapoks are notorious for their high actions that cause a lot of pain and most times that pain doesnt help with anything. the gutiar is also hard to stay in tune and generally very hard to play.

IMHO,buying a kapok its not buying a instrument; its buying musical self mutilation.

The simple answer

if you ask me any day, "what acoustic i should buy?" my answer will be the yamaha 310. what eletric? yamaha's pacifica 012

are there better value guitars? yes
better playing guitars? yes

so why this guitar? the answer is simple - safety, and this will be the basis of my lesson for today. when you first start buying your first guitar you would have 0 knowledge over this "thing", so to me the best way to go about it if you know nothing, is to get a safe bet. im not advertising for yamaha, but i acknowledge that under the beginner field they are pretty hard to beat, a lot of their instruments rank in top 10 best budget/beginner lists for a reason.

for an eletric guitar you have a range of choices, a squire tele is a good guitar so are some of the GRG models, i would however recommend you to stay clear of non-fixed bridges of any form, they kill your tuning fast.

the more complicated answer

but if you dont want a yamaha and want to dwell deeper to find the "right" one here are some tips:

Budget

First you need a budget and my recommendation for a budget? Rm300 - 400 (if you can afford a taylor well i wont stop you). why RM300 minimum? cause well you want to improve your choices. there are some folks that naturally try and sell guitars to you cheaper, you dont want to get stuck in 100 land and only see crappy guitars.

for electrics i recommend RM500-600, for the same reason as the above

What i need to look at?

When inspecting a guitar the first things you need to see are dents and scratches, similar like how you buy your first car. you dont want the guitar to come dented and stuff. some major ones is to see the straightness of the neck, easiest way i can think of is yuo look at the guitar from teh headstock towards the bridge, if its straight you are good to go.

in eletrics it becomes a bit harder, you need to test for eletonics wear and tear, do the pup selector/vol knob and pickups work? i find eletronics being the first thing that fail in cheap eletrics. you also need to do a tuning test which can be found Here

The harder stuff

playability

why i recommend yamaha comes down to this and this alone, if you have a friend that knows guitar he can test it for you. you need to play the guitar, being someone with 0 knowledge this will be challenging. why play the guitar tho? you want to find for bad frets, dead notes, or bad action. unfortunately to know those is the most important aspect of guitar selection and the part that needs experience. this doesnt mean that yamaha wont have such problems, but considering their reputation its a safer bet.

how do you check for bed frets or action? first to the bending test, bend each string on the guitar to see if there are any metallic rings ((the ring comes from the string hitting the frets). if there is, it means that the action is either too low or the frets are too high. dont buy the guitar

how do you check for bad frets and dead notes, play each ntoe on the guitar, if you hear a note that doesnt have a metallic ring but doesnt seem right in any form or function of the guitar (like a muted note). you might have a dead note: dont buy the guitar

what is a mute note?
well put your plam on the guitar hole and strum one note, you will notice that it doesnt vibrate and produce sound. that is muted notes, dead notes sound like them because the frets might be doing the muting for you.

Feel

everyone talks about feel, i do also its the most important thing in your guitar which decides which guitar you will use for most of the time. unfortunately, feel comes with experience, you dont know which guitar you want by just picking it up and strumming it. you need to go through tons of guitars, get used to some styles and functions to know what exactly you want. some people spend years and never find a guitar that feels right, this is perfectly normal.

end notes

i personally will recommend an experienced guy to look at it for you, but if you know nothing at all i would recommend a yamaha just because they have a reputation. but if you like to venture out on your own and find one that is right, then i hope this article helps.

you can find mroe indepth details on the guitar parts and function in this thread

cheers

UPdate: i was made aware that yamaha F310, has increased in price and now is not cheap anymore, hence the previous advise to take the F310 should be taken in the context that it used to be a budget guitar. there are plenty of options to day that can replace the yamaha, unfortuantely i am not familar with any of them

i've never felt pain while playing kapok, cos it has a shorter scale, so lesser string tension.
but also due to that, and also crappy construction, it was never easy to get the low E in tune.

kapok(and the likes) isn't really that bad, just swap the damn steel string with a classical set and it's pretty playable and decent. it's not meant to be an acoustic(no trust rod), but still some shop owner would recommend it doh.gif .

also, you might want to address acoustic body type. i would never buy an F310. why? because for some reason, i could never play anything perfectly on a dreadnought body cry.gif . it just don't feel right, and i'm not a small person shakehead.gif .

i would say recommending someone a kapok as bad advise, generally bacuse its lazy. "hey you want cheap? here kapok!"

i didnt touch on specifics because i dont think people will understand stuff like dreadnought body or solid/laminated top. it poses a lot of questions which have no solid results.

its like thin neck vs thick neck, i dont like thin necks despite everyone saying its great, but generally it doesnt make the guitar a lesser guitar.

back then 20yrs ago, kapok was the cheapest.
of cos nowadays, with plenty of china made guitars at rm150 or so invading the market, there is no real reason to buy a kapok.

basically, a china made rm150 guitar, while almost twice as much as a kapok, will probably play 3-4 times better.
while a china made rm150 guitar compared to yamaha f-310, the china guitar being more than twice as cheap probably will play the same as the f-310 biggrin.gif

inspecting the neck for wrap/bend/twist is not easy.... requesting tip for this too....

the only way i can tell is by testing to play note on each fret. i can look at wrap neck from the bridge to the headstock and still look straight to me

while i agree the choice of solid/laminated top is too technical and specific(i'm still not too sure about it too). body type is hard to ignore, even for beginners. if one can't sit comfortably with a certain body type, all the other arguments becomes useless(neck type, top, scale, action and what not).

generally, just check the neck relieve on all strings. press the string on the 1st fret and on the fret where the neck joints the body(eg, 14th on an acoustic, 12th on a classical etc). your neck should be a little concave right in the center. in most cases, if it's the same on all strings, your neck is in good condition. much easier than lifting the guitar up and risking dropping it blink.gif . my 2cents on how i do it. sweat.gif

i do somewhat agree, then again the recommendation of the f310 is cause of the safety, you can opt for a c310 (i used to own one, quite nice guitar) if you want a smaller classical built.

i do admit that im not too familar with the differences in body types for a acoustic guitars, personally tho i never really judge a guitar because its hard to play. my fav 2 guitars are probably the hardest two to play tongue.gif

i'm not disagreeing or anything. i'm no expert sweat.gif . i just thought it'd be a good addition in the "feel" section. i've seen new players aiming for a V, when clearly a V is not that comfortable to play with. rclxub.gif

not meaning you are, i do understand very well

unfortunately as far as it goes, to tell folks that "feel" is kinda hard. ive tried explaining before, got me no where. then again on a totally different level, most experienced players also fall for the same trap.

i remember when i got my first non-contoured guitar, it was damn hard to play. the body kept hitting my arm sad.gif

i still gas for an RR tho

first guitar? my 2 cents:

ELECTRIC

absolute budget: <1k
Craftsmen - good QC but often not traditional specs/wood
Samick - good overall, designs a matter of taste
SX - QC is not as good, can be superb after setup

medium budget 1k-2k
Squier - safe choice, good designs and playability, lots of choice
Ibanez - like above, designs matter of taste
LTD - a bit overpriced here but overall good quality
Epiphone - overpriced imo
used MIJ - probably the best deal in this range if the condition is still ok

My advise for absolute beginner:

1. BUDGET - Never buy a cheap shxt guitar, your progression and passion will be affected badly (some ppl thinks that when you are not playing then you not losing much $$ sweat.gif )

2. BRAND - Always save up and buy a branded guitar (lower end series) because it hold its value better. Squier or MIM Fender is a good beginner choice for bluesy. Epiphone is more thicker sound and slightly pricey but you can find some good used around RM1k++

3. THE LOOKS - Buy the guitar which looks a killer/cool/awesome/beautiful/lovely/gorgeous to you. Whenever you looking at it and your hand will goes itchy and wants to pick it up

After selling guitars for pretty darn long ...i've learned a few things .

Here's my RM0.02

Your first guitar , should be a guitar that you like .
Something that inspires you , something that looks like what your idol play , or something that you think is damn cool .

The whole point of the first guitar , is to make sure you don't leave the guitar a side and collect dust .
What you want is - this guitar pushes you to move on and continue the learning journey no matter how hard and how tough it gets.
That is why it is important to buy something that you really really really like ...

When you are gonna purchase your second guitar , then value for money , tone , specs , setup , brand , resale value etc etc factor kicks in .

Agreed on your points. Brought my student that day to get his first guitar and after trying out many guitars, I advised him to go with the Yamaha 310 as well. Affordable, nice and wholesome sound and on top of that, the people in Yamaha set it up really nice with superb action and neck feel.

@+3kk!

Hey, I am new to guitar, but not music. I play piano and orchestra percussion (auxiliary, timpani, mallet etc.)

I know most time signature, articulation, dynamics and chord (min, aug, maj, sus). I know here and there when practicing with some guitarist ( e.g. how to tune guitar with chord). Is Yamaha F310 a good start for me?

Edit : I can read treble, tenor and bass clef but not guitar tab.

hello,

i recommend yamaha cause its a safe bet, however if you have musical experience i think you would understand what kinda tone you are looking for. this might prove complicating as the f310 is only 1 kind of guitar in a sea of various body shapes and sizes. there are some quite good china/korea OEM brands running around that can challenge them, ie: cort or farida (personally my fav but can be quite unpredictable) hence to pick out the right one from a sea of wrong ones can be quite daunting. if you want to find out some better opinions and try out yourself, i suggest you visit TGS Cheras as they can be quite helpful to beginners and last time allow you to test guitars side by side to feel what you prefer.

that being said, its also dependent on what you use the guitar for, im mainly an electric player hence the c310 (the classical version of the f310) suits me perfectly as im not too bothered about how the tone or projection sounds like. so a second hand yamaha suits me well (i think i bought for hundred over bucks only)

I have yet to know strumming, is it possible to ask the sales man to play and I choose depend on the intonation? (Sound funny to me ^.^)

hello,

i recommend yamaha cause its a safe bet, however if you have musical experience i think you would understand what kinda tone you are looking for. this might prove complicating as the f310 is only 1 kind of guitar in a sea of various body shapes and sizes. there are some quite good china/korea OEM brands running around that can challenge them, ie: cort or farida (personally my fav but can be quite unpredictable) hence to pick out the right one from a sea of wrong ones can be quite daunting. if you want to find out some better opinions and try out yourself, i suggest you visit TGS Cheras as they can be quite helpful to beginners and last time allow you to test guitars side by side to feel what you prefer.

that being said, its also dependent on what you use the guitar for, im mainly an electric player hence the c310 (the classical version of the f310) suits me perfectly as im not too bothered about how the tone or projection sounds like. so a second hand yamaha suits me well (i think i bought for hundred over bucks only)

they are both technically acoustics, but in acoustics there are many kinds there's classical which is smaller, shorter scale length and use nylon strings (they also tend to have wider necks).

then theres the standard acoustrics that we all know about, in that you have the different body size for different applications. generally in the lower end budget range i dont think this is common, they have only 1 or 2 sizes only.

easy on the fingers is classical, but they are meant for single note playing and less so for strumming. you CAN strum on them yes, but they dont offer the bright sparkle that acoustics are known for and also with the wide necks you might need to learn the classical posistion.

there are pro's and con's to both

Hey guys,

I've been playing acoustic guitar for about a year. Now I'm planning to jump into electric guitar field. Can you suggest me what guitar and amp combo should I get? My budget is bellow RM1000, but maybe can increase a lil bit. I want to play something like Muse, Green Day, Sum 41, Arctic Monkeys, MCR kind of stuff. Not really into shredding so Ibanez might not be suitable I think.

I researched a bit that Squier and Cort guitar might be good for beginner. And for the amp, Roland Micro Cube is fantastic. I'm planning to get Squier Affinity Strat or Maybe even Squier Standard Strat.

Still, wanna hear you guy's opinion and suggestion.
Thanks in the advance. biggrin.gif

What about Marshall? The price seems quite good. Actually I dont really know about the guitar, whether it is suitable for that genre or not.

personally while loving marshalls, i find that their lower end modelling ones are quite erm....

i would recommend a peavey VIP vyper, RM800 bucks. tonewise is ok ok, but you have like a whole recording studio in an amp.

arghh crap i didnt see "combo"

i will go by most effective to least effective then, you pick and choose which is best

most effective = line6 usb interface.
why its good = computer based, you wont have recording issues, volume issues. a lot of things to mess with.
why its not good = not an amp, no gigs, back of the head you want an amp

most tone = vox AC4 series
why its good = natural OD
why its not good = limited in the range of tones you can create.

most "amp versatile" = vox valvetronix circuit amps or Roland Cube
why is it good = get get heaps amount of variety, the former is btter at classic tones than the latter
why its not good = tonally can be very limited as both normally are good like for 3-4 effects and mods.

My first acoustic was a kapok. I cut out the soundhole to be v-shaped, sanded the neck and did a lot of mods and it sounded and played totally different as in a lot better. I still have it till now but no longer playable.

My first electric was a Marina with a body like Satch's JS. Great sound, great neck but heavy as hell. Can only play standing up for 10 mins. Sold it off, later on bought a used Yamaha RGZ and loving it. Now I only buy used gems.

Very nice explanation you got there. Thanks a lot. Maybe I'll go for roland cube, since I want to experiment with the effects and stuff. Or what about Peavey solo and rage, their prices are quiet good.

Also, is squier Affinity a good guitar for beginner like me? Been considering this, cort and ibanez but still can't decide.

i made a mistake on the modelling amps its nto heaps of tone sad.gif as far as amp is concerned i think most of them in the market are ok. there are some concerns with workmanship but that happens at any price point.

the squiers are good guitars, but you need to test a lot for them, you might want to look at spear also.

picks are dependent on what you want to play, but for most guitarists yea

eletrical tuner is needed,

capo again depends, ive only bought one RM20 capo my whole guitar life and ive only used it like a handful of times. if you play a lot of strumming guitar, it might come in useful.

as far as the yamaha yes there are better brands, but other brands need some degree of the right person to guide you. so if you feel adventurous give other brands a try

Okay, some questions left.

Do i need to purchase a metronome as well (which i don't know how to use it exactly even though i have read up about it)?

How much would a tuner costs? I just need one that can get the job done, it doesn't need to be of high end product.

Thanks for your advices, i'll purchase an F310 from Music Bliss after this. smile.gif

1. traditionally yes, but now you can use a lot of things for metronome. i personally download it on my phone or use audicity.

2. tuners? cant rememer, but i think its like 50-100 for one.

they are both very different guitars, the ibz gets bashed about here a lot lol.that being said, bridge problems are commonplace in cheaper guitars. its not that you cant do anything about it, the ones that notice issues are those that likes to do the whammy many times too often.

hence the general rule of thumb, block the damn thing.

Feel

everyone talks about feel, i do also its the most important thing in your guitar which decides which guitar you will use for most of the time. unfortunately, feel comes with experience, you dont know which guitar you want by just picking it up and strumming it. you need to go through tons of guitars, get used to some styles and functions to know what exactly you want. some people spend years and never find a guitar that feels right, this is perfectly normal.

end notes

i personally will recommend an experienced guy to look at it for you, but if you know nothing at all i would recommend a yamaha just because they have a reputation. but if you like to venture out on your own and find one that is right, then i hope this article helps.

you can find mroe indepth details on the guitar parts and function in this thread

cheers
*
Kapok had been my first guitar before. I learn strumming and chords/keynote, type of string, strum pattern using it. About string, i use the original that comes with it. Price also cheap, anyone can bought. So its good for beginners to learn, based on my experience. No need fancy2 wan to be beginner.

If you already serious with guitar, and you want to go through next level, choose acoustic or classical (more fingering).

For first guitar, i recommend find a middle range quality so that beginner will feel comfort to learn if the quality is quite good. Else if like kapok brand, the string distance is quite high from fretboard causing beginner feel frustrated.

sad, is it really not that painful playing other brands of guitar?
can i do anything about lessen the pain? switching strings perhaps? I read about adding superglue, wtf?

EDIT 2: Ok, so seems like it is impossible to not cut my finger while sliding... :'(

kapok is a brand of guitar that is associated with cheap plywood, high bridge, and non-truss rod neck. the problem with these guitars is that they are normally built based on teh spanish guitar instread of the common dread then folks string it up with razor wire to cut any unsuspecting victim

over the years due to the lack of truss rod, its not hard to find a kapok bowed upwards making the action even higher than it already is (tho this is somewhat rare)

naturally with the above "issues" and that its cheap, its a common beginners choice and often not one that ends up to be the beginners first and alst guitar.

because "kapok" is a brand, you may get one that is not bad, and will not be a problem likewise you might get another brand that behaves like hte infamous kapok.

for beginners all guitars are hard to press, it takes a while before the callus starts to form.

if the kapok is the kapok of legend (the one thats super hard to play) one of the easiest ways is to put nylon string on it.

yes, the guitar is quite decent for a beginner. if you have doubts, just go for the Yamaha F310.

Else, like i always comment (sorry, i'm bias), save up and go for a taylor. smile.gif

RM500 can get you a pretty good acoustic guitar. Yamaha F310 is about RM500 new.

If you have a few hundred bucks to spend in a month, it is better to go to class to learn as they have a proper module for you to follow. Else you can try to learn from a friend. self learn can be a little tough if u don't understand the basics as you will try to memorize rather than understand the theory.

Thanks for the guide mate wink.gif

Beginners ask me all the time questions that you've answered for them in your post, so I will have something different to show to them when they come to me with their questions and when they won't be satisfied with my answers biggrin.gif

kapok is not that bad if you know how to sand down the nut.
but beginners wont know how to do that.
if you string it with extra light strings, put a magnetic pickup, it can give quite good tones. serious.

For beginners, there are many to choose from.
yamaha F310, cort ad810 or af510 smaller body, epiphone, fender, ibanez.
they do have decent beginner guitars

when you are better and want to move to a better guitar, i strongly recommend against yamaha because their guitars except f310 are overpriced in malaysia. if u really want a yamaha, go to singapore to buy.

there are good value solid top guitars from epiphone, cort and tanglewood.

You can check the retailer with us. I dealt with musicbliss before (not shipping though) and they're good.

Still it's best to visit the shops and try those guitars yourself.

Hi, can i know if there are any acoustic guitars other than f310(seems too pricey for me) for my first guitar? (actually learnt for few months when i was very young but gave away my old guitar) As I plan to buy a cheap one, maybe a second hand then play for some time first, and if it's not 3min temperature then I will invest in better ones.

U want cheapo guitar, go to that shop in jln silang downtown. Nowadays hard to find cheap guitars because every guitar is imported and USD = RM4.3 thanks to you know who...

Online search for qwenkay. They sell low end guitars there.

It is recommended that if u buy a cheap guitar, bring it to a friend who knows abt guitar to adjust it for you. Normally the nut and saddle may need sanding down to make it comfortable to play.

If you do not have kawan that can help you, u need to spend more to buy at least a yamaha or epiphone

best u can afford is a rather arbitrary concept though
if u apply this principle in life, u end up not being able to afford many other things
if i so happen to have rm200k spare in my bank account, should i buy a rm200k guitar with gold inlays?

i rather buy the cheapest most decent quality instrument befitting my ability

go broke or go home id say, all the way,

if you had that amount of monies, you must spend it on a Custom Order Gibson with Braz RW neck, Gold Inlays and the works man.

Why settle for 1k? pifft, how can one go anywhere playing guitar if their guitar is soo cheap?

eh kapok is very easy guitar to play la.
very light tension since its like a shorter scale classical guitar that they threw steel strings on.
just the higher action makes it quite hard to shred...but its not meant for that anyway tongue.gif

Is Cort AD Mini ok? Other than this model or brand, any other recommended 3/4 size guitar with price range RM450-500? I am newbie and I don't want to spend too much on a guitar yet as I don't know whether I would be motivated to actually learn.
