Dear all sifu, need some advise here....

View back some recent shots with my 50 f1.4D, I found something that scare me… >.<

I realize when I shoot nearer to the subject, the outcome is sharp and nice (refer first photo)
But when I shoot more far from the subject, the outcome is soft, creamy and really cannot for me…it looks like out of focus. (refer 2nd and 3rd)
I am suspecting focus issue on my body but with another kit lens, the outcome is good and acceptable (maybe aperture fix at 3.5 max. don’t give big difference?)
Any sifu here have experience this before might give some advise? Or it is normal??
If there is focus problem on the lens, how much estimate cost me if need to send to service centre?

Maybe you can try this:
Shoot with LiveView and compare the result. If the result is different under same shooting setting and lighting condition, you might want to check for Focusing issue.
You can also try shooting using manual focus to compare.

Also check if your lens is dirty, oil marks, etc. If got filter, try removing the filter and shoot.

D7100 really worth the price? People commented a bit overprice for DX

I plan to upgrade my d3100, Not sure go d7100 or direct FX (FX need new set of lens...)
Hate my d3100, hardly track and focus flying bird
*
Cheapest FX now need close to RM6K, before that you need more. Higher end FX cost over RM10K. How do you define overprice DX?
D7000/D7100 is higher end DX, the differences are important enough for many DSLR users

As for your tracking, the lenses also play very important role. What lens are you using?
Hop in Nikon Centre @ Berjaya Times Square and try these lenses:
55-300mm f/3.5-f/5.6 DX
70-300mm f/3.5-f/5.6
80-200mm f/2.8
70-200mm f/2.8

See the huge difference in the focusing speed and accuracy

Anybody knows how to adjust monitor/lcd brightness based on cd/m2?
E.g. adjust your display to 90cd/m2? But our monitor display brightness is 0-100 (I suppose in percentage?)

mine was 2nd version, terrible. noisy focusing sound and slow
agreed with the last 2 sentences
*
For the price, it's ok la. The sound not really a problem, the speed you can still compensate, but the main issue is the "accuracy". If you shoot events, the focus accuracy can sometimes really give you problem.

Actually there is another problem, you can google Flash over-exposure for this lens (it can go up to over 1 stop Flash over-expose), but it doesn't seems to happen for every situation. This can really ruin our shot during event shooting, all of a sudden, the flash over-expose over 1 stop, and sometimes it doesn't.

For sharpness wise, it's sharp even wide open; Those not getting the sharpness might have a bad copy with issues.

that's what i tot.. compact cam can ady ma  tongue.gif
will be in ballroom all day. i was hoping no group pic is needed.. maybe just some pic of the speaker & important personnel, my bosses & etc. seems like need to use high ISO all the time! or maybe just use my 50mm prime all the way xD
*
Shoot at wide angle like 18mm is safe even using f/3.5 on your kit lens. As long your distance is not too close, but having 20-30 pax you won't be standing close anyway. On wider angle, more will be in focus even at large aperture. As long you get the focus right is good enough, most people won't go zoom in and check they standing on the most left side or back row is "slightly" out of focus. Besides, usually you will resize before you share out the photos, just resize it to lower resolution and sharpened it a little and everything will look ok.

Don't worry so much, just concentrate on getting the shot, which is more important imo.
Check your shutter speed or limit it so it doesn't go too low that result in blur due to subject movement. Shooting group photo should be less problem, but you might need to check when you're shooting subject which are moving like giving speech, greeting each other, etc.
When you review your photos, usually the problem might not due to aperture but whether your focus is accurately on the spot you intended. If your focus is off, the smaller aperture will only help you if it's off a little.

nope, i still remember my old 15" crt is very painful when using 3d software or photoshop, all tools cramp together  sweat.gif

even the refresh rate is very low when gaming, not sure colour ratio those thing, didnt check last time. LG brand one, cheap cheap RM200 can get that time
*
15" ma, but no viewing angle problem.
LCD suffers badly, those cheap ones, you sit higher or sit lower also can see changes badly in terms of contrast/brightness, left right also same. This affect the color temperature also, as you sit lower, everything looks darker and more yellowish, then you sit higher become brighter/less contrast and bluish.

1st one.

2nd one is like an additional version or some instagram filter added, when you wanna add some effect or different kind of feel (e.g. old age, classic, etc).
These kind of things are usually subjective, some people like to add these kind of effect to all their photos, some even did it to all their couple's wedding photos maybe it's their style, some people may like it, but remember these "effect" means it doesn't look natural but more like some filters added.

NR seriously destroy image quality?

Try view before and after, it will loose sharpness and details.
But if you're delivering for clients/customer, then you need to decide whether you want to keep/reduce the noise.

17-55 and 17-50 different alot? if so the i think i will save up my budget and get a 17-55 2nd hand, but most people ask to go for 1750 wor, can save money for other things...
yea most prob gonna go FF bah... thats why thinking about buy the 17-50 or don buy, save for 24-70...
brother using le.. ._.
*
How long will it take for your to switch to FF? Later you get the 24-70 you still find not wide enough and need to step back and no space, end up you may want to sell it.

If you got a kit lens, just use it. It's good enough and can save you money to fund your FF or next lens. For group photos and if you have flash, you don't really need f/2.8, most likely you'll be using smaller aperture to get more DOF.

If you want a f/2.8 and don't want to spend too much, then the Tamron is good enough, a 2nd hand unit is much cheaper below RM800 (without VC), and even if you sell it later, the price is just around there. Sharpness and IQ wise, it's comparable to Nikon's (provided you get a good copy), but the main issues is the accuracy and speed, e.g. if you want to track subject (e.g. wedding walk-ins in low light, kids running) and here's where the big different between Nikon's 17-55mm vs the Tamron's 17-50mm; but if you're just using for group photo, portraits, there's no issue, not really worth spending few thousands on another lens, in fact your kit lens is also good enough.
Fact is, you can show people photos taken from the kit lens, Tammy 17-50 or Nikon 17-55, who can actually tell the difference? I've shot with both lens and deliver photos taken by both lens, nobody knows the lens is different just by looking at the photos; only yourself will know when you use it, with the Nikon's, you'll find the accuracy, speed and silent focusing; of all, the accuracy is the primary and most important especially you're shooting action/moving subjects and in low lights.

If you want to get the Nikon's 17-55mm, then the 2nd hand is much more worth it considering the BIG dip in price from NEW, it's really not worth to get a new unit; the problem is to find a good copy 2nd hand unit and if there's problem, prepare to break your wallet because the repairs may not even worth to pay, but then you have purchase the lens. This lens is actually big and much heavy compared to the Tamron, less convenient and more worrying if you want to carry it around for normal/casual shooting.
