hi.anyone here keep mata2 turtle?
any tips in its husbandry?
*
I am about to purchase one. They have shown up at local fish/pet stores recently.
Did some research on them.
They do grow fairly large (around 20inches carapace) but takes a long time to attain their maximum size as they have a long life span if cared for properly. However they do not require a large space as they are mostly sedentary.
They are fully carnivorous and feeds on a staple of mostly live fishes.
They are quite sensitive to water conditions and it is important that their water is kept clean at all times.
Since they are mostly sedentary, this is a rather boring pet to keep but pleasing to the eye due to their unique and prehistoric look.

cool.
I got mine red mata2 turtle a couple of week ago
I kept it in 2 feet plastic tray, over aged catappa leave soaked water
What about yourself?amazon or colombia variant?
*
Not sure which variant as I just saw it in the shop and reserved it. Haven't brought it home yet smile.gif
It has a nice red coloration though.
How much did you get yours and what is the size?

Mata Matas can actually be kept in deep water but they will require something to cling on to at the surface. They know how to swim to the surface to breathe.

Nice.
How big are they now and how long have you had them?
Are they hardy turtles? Any specific thing to take note of with their care?

Other than some specialized need they are ok !

Anything that swim in water will be their diet if can fit their mouth !
Cheers

Specialized needs as in?
I just got mine yesterday. Around 4" carapace.
Started eating within 30 mins of taking it out of the bag.

You deworm your babies?
I have read it is difficult to deworm mata2s because they are constantly exposed to bacteria and germs from their feeding requirement of live feeders.

Wah, now dropped to the 2nd page. Have to bump up this thread.

My Mata2 fouls up the water very quickly.
I put it in a plastic container without filter and have to change the water every 2-3 days. I doubt a small filter will help.
But its not a problem cos' I just pour away the water and fill in fresh ones. Water is only about 3 inches deep.
Its eating a lot, even immediately after a water change. I feed it baby koi with turtle pellets stuffed into their mouths for additional nutrition...

Unstable water parameters too often will cause them to shed excessively which may or may not affect their growth or appetite !
*
Yes, I have wondered about this point too.
Anyway to overcome the dirty water issue? I doubt a filter will work and the water level is too low for a filter to work anyway.

I have kept my mata2 turtle over the last 1 month.
So far I only do water change weekly basis
I dont monitor my turtle, all I did was to make sure there are fishes in the tank for it to feast on.I used catappa leaves to reduce the water pH

Hi there, just wondering how your Mata Mata is doing?
Mine has almost doubled it's size since I got it. It is now around 5" (carapace).

I am thinking of getting a Leopard Tortoise or Brown Emys.
Which is a better choice? Or a Kenya Giant Tortoise?
