Still can't understand this game, what's it about? and what makes it so high popularity and "fun" from yours opinion?

I'm starting to gain interest in this game..what is it all about? i read some posts "eat to stay alive" etc, i thought Dayz is zombie game? whats the objective of this game?
When it was released earlier i thought it was similar to Warz which was panned by critics and gamers alike..how come this is so popular?

Yesterday i played for a while just want to test. When i died. Then need to respawn. But the screen keep black. dunno why. so i just leave server and start again. Died again. and still stuck at respawn. black screen. By the way, actually i dunno which where to go haha.. Just walking blindly.. try to loot into all house. only can found a tin of sardine. Then walk a bit further. until i found place like storage house. So decide to go there using off road near within grass. All of sudden i heard someone shout at me. When i looked back, a guy with axe. He whack me till death. End of sad story.
