I beg to differ. Flashed my DIR 615 rev G2 to DD-WRT and configured it to be repeater bridge and it is working fine. I guess you installed the wrong firmware as there's no official firmware for rev G2.I have success with OpenWRT though. It's a lot easier to configure.
However, if you flash your DIR 615 rev G2 to the rev D2/D3/D4 firmware and configure correctly it will work! (as rev G2 has the same chipset as rev D2/D3/D4)
Anyway, it's good to know that there is another alternative which is the OpenWRT you mentioned
