imho it depends on what post you take.. i think drawing/sketching is quite critical for the post of designer... it really important ( from my point of view ) since designer are most likely have to scribble things first before make it perfect. but if u are really good in using software to sketch / drawing.. then u maybe need to ask them la..
i'm also BAD at sketching haih..

urm.. *shrug* i can't really draw but I can sketch out ideas. does that count? anyway, i think sketching can be done by anyone. as to drawing, it depends how much detail you'd wanna put in.

everybody can sketch.. but not all people can draw... it really depends on the job that you're applying and what kind of designer you are..
if you're to work in 'web' design industry.. then, you don't really need to have this kind of skill.. (but you can roughly sketch the idea of how the website's gonna be..)

sketch is a undetailed drawing.. skteches is not limited to layout only.. even for the content of a website can be sketch so that it's more clear of what the aim/result's gonna be..
drawing to me ought to be more specific... there's a calculation of height, width (needs some math skill as well).. and also short description/label on every part of it..
Drawing i know la..(drawing ur design with using ur softward) - i dunno whether that's called drawing..
<!-- Examples --> i'm assuming that you have went through form 5 (spm).. when you studied pure science subject and when there was a graph-related experiment... you can see there's a big difference on sketching a graph and drawing graph..

no matter what.. you need to know the basics before other tools.. and the basics of ideas or design is the pen, pencil, paper along with observations.. you sketch out something because you don't wanna lose the idea. you draw something because you'd like to make it concrete. if you don't the know basics of pencil shading or the study of it using a pencil, you're jumping over a boulder and just diving into digital design. if you think it's ridiculous, ask yourself why doesn't the concept artist in Star Wars Doug Chiang just use digital tools right away to come up with something instead of pencil, rulers, erasers, markers.. and etc. no matter how great digital tools are advancing, never forget the roots of things. Cheers.

imo, its quite important as when u face ur client ..coz u only can sketch out ur concept/ideas on paper to show to ur client on the spot if the client request to...u cant sketch ur stuff on ur comp unless u got a laptop tablet..

what a designer needs is the ability to communicate.
u see, a designer have lots of things going on in his/her head. unless u are a xavier class telepath, u need to convey this idea precisely and with the utmost impact. the delivery medium is also important.
some designers communicate best by sketching. this is the fastest way to relay ur ideas visually. with additional write-ups, u'll add another dimension to those sketches. and when u present the work verbally, it'll even add a few other dimensions to ur presentation. at the end of the day, u communicate with the medium that u're best familiar with.
and this is not just about u and the client. it's the same when u're studying as well!
some students b**** about "i cant draw, so i will fail". that's a total bull. malaysian design industry have been stereotyped that designer MUST be able to draw. heck, i've been around in the UK, hardly any designer could actually draw. if they CAN draw, they'd be calling themselves artists.

i can't draw...i really can't...the peeps i draw looks like aliens...i visualise it on the computer...it's faster dat way for me...and the clients will have a clearer picture of my design...i'm not planning to learn to draw..coz it doesn't really affect me much...

i think as long as you can put down ur rough ideas to paper (process of turning idea into visual), is more than enough, no matter is ugly or messy
everyone has their own style, so dun be so ashame of ur sketching
