i can't really draw but I can sketch out ideas. does that count?
anyway, i think sketching can be done by anyone. as to drawing, it depends how much detail you'd wanna put in.
is tis really important as a designer?, need advice/suggestion

no matter what.. you need to know the basics before other tools.. and the basics of ideas or design is the pen, pencil, paper along with observations..
you sketch out something because you don't wanna lose the idea. you draw something because you'd like to make it concrete. if you don't the know basics of pencil shading or the study of it using a pencil, you're jumping over a boulder and just diving into digital design. if you think it's ridiculous, ask yourself why doesn't the concept artist in Star Wars Doug Chiang just use digital tools right away to come up with something instead of pencil, rulers, erasers, markers.. and etc. no matter how great digital tools are advancing, never forget the roots of things.
