I don't think your bro is very big or muscular then if he believes using dumbells won't give you big muscles. Machines are good for those who're rehabilitating from injuries or saved last in a workout when your stabilizer muscles are exhasuted.
Free weights > machines
Dumbells > Barbells > Machines
Free weights equals greater CNS force proprioreception due to more stabilizers brought into play = more CNS stimulation = greater growth hormone production = greater muscle mass.
This is an old pic of me maxing out on a bench press machine. They're too light for me, i had to attach extra plates by the side. Machines are inferior compared to free weights.
