I heard that Huawei is struggling to grow because their R&D is lacking.. and they have not come up with any new products that can rival the big boys.. esp. in the Internet routers and switches space. Last time, Huawei was caught stealing Cisco intellectual property and was sued by them and ultimately their products were banned from being sold in US. Sometimes, the 'pirate' mentality are still in the old guards of those from communist leadership who have formed this company.. maybe difficult to transform it into a name brand global/multinational organisation.
ZTE is in a better position of surviving because they have government backing. Many telecoms vendor are feeling the pinch now. Nortel being one of the worst followed by Ericsson.
Australia was the other country which blocked Huawei from winning the national broadband network there. They claimed the founder of Huawei, Ren Zhengfei was a Chinese military background man and it was dangerous to entrust their sensitive government information with the vendor.
