I think what generates happiness depends on the person's goals and lifestyle.

A simple dude who isn't materialistic earning 5 figures might be happy because basic needs are covered.

A dude with constant material needs may not find 5 figures enough because demand keeps increasing. There will always be a new car, new gadgets, new clothes......the list goes on.
