no la.... lan port basically port that looks like phone port but a bit bigger
and router is illegal in his case bcos his university dun want troubles caused by internet sharing etc...

Lan port is LAN port aka physical port for you to connect to desktop or laptop(which have ethernet port)

it's slightly wider than ordinary telephone port
some university doesnt allow wifi router ...because many people just simply use router + use wifi with open network ...so unknown people will access your wifi anytime anywhere ...when he/she doing illegal stuff (like torrent or whatever) ..University only can detect all these packets aka data is sent/receive from your room port ...then u will kena explain until no body

make it short ..security issue

but still got way to overcome this restriction la ...if u want to connect your phone ...

u can create virtual wifi hotspot using your laptop adapter or the most simple way is create ad-hoc network(wireless) with internet sharing (if your windows phone allow to connect ad hoc network)

last time my uni also having such strict security system ...so just create ad hoc or create virtual wifi hotspot ..done
===

argh ..out of topic already ..btw ..some ppl claimed that they went to nokia roadshow and

920 - get umbrella n t shirt
820 - 100 voucher + t shirt

is that true?
*
Erm... so LAN port is ethernet port? I have a modem and I guess it has an ethernet port.... My modem is connected to fixed telephone line and the computer as well... But then, if you are using LAN port, how do u access to Internet since it is connected to laptop/ pc but not the smartphone...

LolXD I'm planning to get wifi router at home.... If I can access online using my existing fixed line internet.... it will be great! smile.gif

I went to lowyat yesterday and they offer umbrella + t shirt + bluetooth earpiece (the salesman said bluetoothe earpiece he gave me personally > trying to lure me to buy LOL) Some people only got umbrella/ t shirt, so I guess you need to get the right salesman.

I'm not sure for Lumia 800 but that's what I heard as well. =)

LAN is pen!s in hokkien, so, LAN port = ......  brows.gif  brows.gif  brows.gif

That offer thingy, maybe just lowyat or every outlet? For me who preordered it get RM 150 voucher - applies to both 920 and 820.
*
Ya, only at Low Yat roadshow... till this Sunday... There's also another roadshow going on in Peneng.

QUOTE(orenji @ Jan 8 2013, 09:45 PM)
I wanna get white lumia 920 too, is it any ready stocl around kl?

shud i wait for roadshow , perhaps will have some free gift?
*
The roadshow is already launched at Low Yat yesterday. It will last till this Sunday. They are only offering umbrella and t shirt as freebies. And there are red, black and white units when I visited yesterday. But I heard that Red is running out of stock.

Guy, if you all are eligible for the rm 200 rebate, it is really worth. By just looking at Digi plan, if you total up the monthly fee and the discounted price for phone + rm200 rebate, it will be less than 1999. drool.gif

Digi offering balk and white only right?

for your case got few way to do that

1. get a wireless router and plug it in between your modem and your pc ...then your modem set as bridge mode and you config your wireless router to PPPoE

2. get a wireless modem router and take away your modem ...straight plug it to telephone line and pc ..then config using PPPoE setting

3. get a wireless adapter and create a ad hoc network or virtual wireless access point / hotspot for you to connect to your smartphone
*
So, which one is the best option? In terms of stability and price? Thank you.

better router instead rather than use connectify... you can say connectify is last possible option as there's some limitation about it
*
QUOTE(fantasy1989 @ Jan 9 2013, 07:31 AM)
perfect stability = wireless modem router
connectify is the temporary option and not really stable
that 1 only work if hie have wireless adapter ..if he use desktop which doesnt have wifi adapter ...cannot
download pdf reader?
*
Thank you. I guess the difference between wireless router and wireless modem router depends on the modem I'm using at home right? If I'm using fixed line modem, I will need a wireless router instead of a wireless modem router right?

Any recommendation on good wireless router?

Thank you so much!

if u using wireless router(A) ..u need to have separated modem ...if u using wireless modem router(B) ...u no need to have modem ..because A doesnt have function to dail up/connect internet ..it's only create a VLAN to multiply your connection from 1 to many ethernet port and create wifi hotspot

while B is all in 1 function ..just switch your device ON ...then it will automatic do everything (with proper configuration)
*
Oh ty^^ But then wireless modem router I need to get from my fixed line telco to switch my internet pln to wireless plan right?

If I use wireless router, L920 supports that? I mean searching hotspot (After setting up the wireless router, am I able to browse using Lumia 920)? Cuz I remembered reading something that Lumia 920 doesn't support hotspot search....

Thank you smile.gif

Nope Think it this way
If you are on streamyx
With streamyx modem
What you need to share internet connection
Wireless Router - only handles router

What you can do ?

Option 1

Let the router manage the modem dialer for you set the modem to bridge mode

Option 2

Set the modem to router mode then the modem will manage the dialer for you.

Option 3
Get a wireless modem router this device handles everything for you

PROS of the above setup
Either one failed either modem or router you can immediately replace one than all. You are able to access both setting control using their IP address
CONS
Too many devices and will consume more power.
If you are talking about 3G Broadband Router
Usually handle both wireless and modem
*
Thank you! But I have no idea how to carry out Option 1 and Option 2. With Option 2, does it mean I can straight away do it on my existing modem without buying a router?

I think I will need to spend money and ask those telco people to set up for me >< Ty^^

The easiest for you now is to get a wireless modem router. Setting option 1 is easy for me but for you its alittle challenging.
*
Haha yaya I think so... Ty^^ But buying wireless modem router, does it mean to change my internet plan?

of course NOT

If you remember properly when the guy come to install your maxis fixed line they will give you a slip with user and password.

This information is required when setting up your router. Most latest router today have auto mode it ask you to type a few things the rest it setup for you from my experience like belkin.

If you do not have username and password call maxis tell them your modem spoil you bought a new one request for the username and password.
*
o.O if I'm buying a wireless modem router, what do i need username and password?

So, just buy wireless modem router from any shop outside, then? Ty^^

pratically its just like that. so if u do not have username and password who are you?

Different from simcard the number is already registered to you but broadband they do not know who you are they only have a line to your house. The router do not know who to call? we are telling it where to call.
*
So I can buy wireless modem router at all those shops that sell accessories? Which brand would you recommend a? Thank you smile.gif

QUOTE(fantasy1989 @ Jan 14 2013, 02:32 PM)
just set to malaysia then register your credit card using malaysia info ..then only change the region to US ..u still can use your credit card to buy apps

OR

u just dont ever change the region to US ..just go to windows store (using pc) and push/purchase apps from there ..then it will sent a apps link to your email ..just download from there
*
o.o I thought need to register debit card under the country to use the country's marketplace? If not, why everyone needs to go through all the troubles to register a US address?

Thank you smile.gif
