*

Lenovo
Ideapad G780, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M + (1600x900)@RM2299[3.0kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm); W7HP

Hello all. This is kinda cheap given the laptop size, compared to rivals.

Im not up to date with IT nowadays, last purchase dated 3-4 yrs ago.. anyone can advise is it good?

Im using it for online ie: bloomberg and related activities. Sometimes will have light gaming.
Will the spec not good/sufficient enough for my utilization?  icon_question.gif
*
they are good enough. since you are into light gaming, you dont need a powerful GPU, so save the rest of the money and throw in a SSD. plus, this massive 17" screen is capable of watching HD movies. biggrin.gif

Then what is the use of i7 tongue.gif?
How much SSD storage can I exchange for the 1TB HDD storage?
Anyone have the pricelist? tongue.gif
*
the use of i7 is for professional projects usage like AutoCAD, programming code compilation which needs the power of processors. like sifu TJ said, if you intend to game only, i5 is enough. and the rest let your graphics card to do the job. most of the games now are depending on graphics card, not the processor.

about HDD exchange, max is 128GB. no pricelist provided unless you ask it directly at shops or at the garage sales section.

The largest is 128GB? Meaning that 1TB HDD = 128GB SSD?
Or I should put in both? (Can I?)
*
the price of 1TB HDD equals to 120GB Intel 330 SSD. the Z400 is a single hard drive bay, so its impossible to place 2. unless you want to get a desktop replacement, which is 17" screen and above. sweat.gif

however, save the money bro. SSD upgrade can be done in the future, not now. the price for SSD is yet still skyrocketed.

But our sifuTJ suggested to get a SSD instead of i7..
Okay, I will just get the original z400 with these spec:

Z400T, i7-3632QM + Nvidia GT740M + (1366x768, touch)@RM2799, 4GB, 1TB, W8; 2 years warranty

I prefer touch because it won't be old-fashioned so soon tongue.gif
I'm gonna use this laptop for the following few years!
*
yes, he did suggested get SSD instead of i7 because if compared to SSD, i7 only boost loading performance around 15%, which you cant feel the improvement.

but since you dont want to be old-fashioned, we cant force you to buy the laptop we recommended.

I would love to have that model if they can exclude the Nvidia Dedicated GPU (as I really don't need extra heat) and W8 (awful GUI). Any idea if that configuration available?
*
no but they currently have this :

Z400 touch, Pentium 2020 + Intel HD + (1366x768;touch)@1699, 4GB, 500GB, W8

Thanks for the reply.

i7-3632QM (35W Quad-Core) is good for me as far as the quad-core power efficiency is concern. Pentium 2020 seems a bit too low in term of power efficiency for its kind performance.

Any other model that you know that come with i7-3632QM but without Dedicated GPU.
*
im afraid no, as they do come with dedicated graphics card. even most of the ULV i7 in 14" laptops do also have graphics card.

I guess it is too bad for me. I am doing CPU intensive task only thus I really, really don't need the extra heat on top of the CPU that already running at 100% utilization. Any further unnecessary increase (from the dedicated GPU) in heat is going to really working against the reliability if my notebook.

I saw some models at our garage sales that fit the bill but sadly to say they are all grey import model. Wonder if our country (any brand) have that kind of model too.
*
you shouldnt worry. if you dont want excessive battery drained due to graphics card, you can select models with nvidia optimus graphics switching technology. if you are not gaming, the chip will be automatically switch to intel HD graphics mode. under heavy tasks like gaming, the chip will detect the task and automatically switch it to dedicated graphics mode.

select weaker graphics card to avoid money wastage.

I see. How much the Dedicated GPU will consume while in idle/standby mode where Integrated GPU is the one running the show? Can we actually turn off the Dedicated GPU permanently so it wont use even a milliwatt?
*
idle mode consumes maybe around 20W if unused (depends on card). im not sure if intel can disable nvidia dedicated graphics but nvidia can disable the intel integrated graphics.

Thanks for the info bro. 20W is a big no, no for me. It even worst than ULV TDP (17W) and more than half of what the i7-3632QM (35W) TDP.... But I still wonder why with the grey import model we can easily find model with Quad-Core i7 (35W) without Dedicated GPU but not with the official Malaysian version. shakehead.gif
*
like you said, grey import, means its imported from other countries which may have various specs that are not in our country. they are just like automobiles, example honda legend in malaysia, which is a rare car. laugh.gif

Raymond, ??? smile.gif
Elitebook 6930p, 1 clip take out the batter. 3 screws take out HDD. 1 screw access RAM. 1 screw access WIFI card (iinm). Getting to the fan and heatsink involve a lot more work tongue.gif laugh.gif

And users generally don't game on Elitebook.
I seriously don't think the Z400/500 for gaming is a good idea at all  sweat.gif
*
yeah. i have to remove the touch sensitive panel and keyboard also to get access to the cooler. well, i do game on my elitebook but not heavy games. only light games like simcity 4 and games from the past.

and yeah. gaming on Z series is not a good idea. chance to accumulate dust is more than Y series do.

I check thru review online, lenovo limit CPU boost up to 2.5 GHz only..

Not so sure for such claim. Boost may needed if i play FIFA or some car racing game/graphic games? Nowadays game easily exceed 1GB.. last time my game is CS and F1, rarely reach 500mb nia... hahahaha
*
the I5-3210M originally clocked at 2.5GHz. only turbo boost overclock the processor to 3.1GHz sweat.gif

modern games now depended on graphics card (which the G780 has a GT630M graphics card in it), not the processor except if you use intergrated graphics. so the boost function is not needed. and yeah, games nowadays are in the size of 1GB and above. so far, the largest size i ever heard is 20GB for single game without expansion packs/DLC.
