Hi,

I'm planning to get another unit of Asus router to do aimesh. I have a AC88U at first floor underneath the stair case (store room).

My second floor room (closed door) barely receive any wifi signal. Probably can say bad not the worst one. My speedtest at first floor can get max speed, 500mbps but in my room when i closed door it down to 10~20mbps.

So if I just want to cover wifi signal on second floor (probably my room only) will AC66U B1 sufficient?

Another question is, can I set up aimesh using lan?
Which mean the my plan is
AC88U lan > AC66U then use the lan port to my PC.

Thanks in advance!

Under the stair case in a closed store room is the worst place to put your router. Not a surprised you are getting this slow in your room.

Yea, you can run AiMesh with Ethernet LAN backhaul. But if you want to AiMesh with wireless backhaul, forget about it unless you can move your router to another spot.

First of all, thanks for the reply!

After MCO I planned to move the router to outside of the close room by hanging on the wall. Should work better right?

Next question is that, if using ethernat lan backhaul, will my AC88U still the main unit? Cause I know that AC88U have more feature than AC66U B1.

Thanks!

Hi,

I have been using ac88u for my 3 storey house all the time and the router is located at the ground floor living room.
I just added a new router to create an aimesh network.

My set up is
WAN : ac88u (ground floor)
Node : ac66u b1 (1st floor) using LAN

My ac66u b1 is connected using LAN1 and have LAN4 go into my PC. The rest of my device is using WiFi.
But I started to encounter some network stuttering. The network connection goes on and off. So I tried to perform a ping test. The result is quite bad.

Is my set up wrong?

Hi dragon528,

Make sure the firmware is updated to the latest.

Try changing the WiFi channel of the main router until you get the most stable connection.

Ping the router also so that you know whether it is because of the Internet connection problem of the connection between the router and the node.

Thank you

Hi Asus,

The image attached in previous post is from my desktop PC. Not using wifi. Simple to say my set up is:

[WAN - AC88U] -> LAN CABLE (WALL) -> [NODE - AC66U B1 LAN4] - [Desktop PC - LAN1]

Hi dragon528,

You can try ping the router also, and update the LAN driver of your PC.

Are you able to connect your PC/laptop directly to the LAN cable connected to the node?

Or connect directly to the LAN port of the RT-AC88U? This is to make sure whether there is problem on the main router.

Thank you

I trying to use the ethernet backhaul set up. Earlier set up is not so correct but even after I set it up using ethernet backhaul, I still encounter intermittent Request timed out.

Even the connection type is wireless, my connection still same as plugging cable.

Here is my router aimesh screen setup.

Hi dragon528,

1) Can you try updating the firmware to the latest first and try again. From the image given, I can see that the RT-AC66U B1 are still using old version, the latest version is 3.0.0.4.385.20630. Do a factory reset after the update and add the node again.

https://www.asus.com/Networking/RT-AC66U-B1...pDesk_Download/

Please do the same for the RT-AC88U.

2) Are you able to connect your PC/laptop directly to the LAN cable connected to the node?

Or connect directly to the LAN port of the RT-AC88U? This is to make sure whether there is problem on the main router.

Ping the router and ping the Google at the same time.

Thank you

Thanks for the reply.

After I reset both router and reconfigure again. It work perfect now! I got no clue why.

Hi everyone! Need seek advise on Asus aimesh issue.

Currently using AC88U (main PPPoE) and AC66U-B1 (aimesh backhaul ethernet). Both flash with Asus-Merlin firmware and up to date. Using Unifi 500mbps.

Location
AC88U - Ground floor living room
AC66U-B1 - Room 2nd floor

My problem is that the AC88U main router WiFi is super terrible! When I walk from my room to downstairs, the WiFi is either not workable or barely having any speed at all! I ran speedtest on 2 iPhone and MacBook, the speed I get is about 1 ~ 4 mbps like that.

If I stay in my room, desktop PC that connect LAN have no issue. WiFi on the 2nd floor is good as well, can up to 100mbps!

I disable SMART CONNECT and make sure all devices connect to the 5Ghz WiFi before the speedtest.

Can anyone explain what exactly should I set for the WiFi settings? TIA!

Is its a roaming issue where you are still connected to the slower node although you already entered the coverage area of another AiMesh node?

I will suggest using the stock firmware due to better AiMesh compability.
*
If I feel something not right, I will off and on back my wifi to connect to the nearest node. But the wifi speed still terrible. I'm unsure why it happen like this after I set up AiMesh.

So stock firmware is more recommended for AiMesh? Is ok for my current router to direct upload the stock firmware?

Hi everyone,

Currently, I'm facing some issues with the AiMesh connection.
My current set up is AC88U (Main router) and AC68-B1 (Node).

I have successfully set up the AiMesh, but it doesn't work well as expected.
The Node I tested with Ethernet backhaul or Wifi, the connection is not stable and I keep getting intermittent disconnection.
If I direct use Wifi or Lan cable to connect to the main router, the connection is perfectly fine. But if is connected to the Node, the connection is not stable.

The way I test it to confirm the unstable connection is that I use cmd with 192.168.0.1 -t
I can see a lot of "request time out".

Any help will be appreciated. TIA

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to do a port forwarding for my torrent software. I am currently using AC88U, previously it worked, but after moving to a new house and setting up everything again, the port forwarding does not work anymore.

I even tried to disable all the firewall from my Windows to router firewall, but it still indicates the port is blocked.

I also read something regarded to nat or cgnat stuff but I totally got no idea.

Attached image that I have done port forwarding in the router and my wan IP.

That's because you don't have a public IP address. You can't have external access unless you have a public IP.

Which ISP and what plan do you use?

For Maxis Fibre, you can pay RM10 per month to get a public IP.

For Unifi, you need valid reasons to get a public IP if you are using 300Mbps or below.

QUOTE(PRSXFENG @ Aug 19 2024, 05:10 PM)
your WAN IP is in the 10.X range, which means you are behind CGNAT
think of it like
instead of your router is connected directly to the internet
you are connected to yet another router and some other users are also connected to the same router, and you all share the same public ip address

with this, you have no control over port forwarding, you just can't

who is your ISP?
If Unifi, I think you need 500Mbps and up
If Maxis, +RM10 monthly
If TIME, 600Mbps or up
If Allo/City Broadband, RM100 one time fee
*
I see, currently using maxis 500mbps. Didn't realize need to pay for it! Previously was using unifi

previously it worked because you got Public IP WAN
now you moving to a new house got Private IP WAN you isp is unifi for 100Mbps ??? will be Private IP
get 500MBPS to get back Public IP WAN settle

mine is UNIFI 500Mbps i still have Public IP no issue port forward and torrents fully speed Max

Previously is unifi. Just switch to maxis after move. That's why I did.a reset on router. Didn't realize maxis need to pay. Using same 500mbps.
