Hi all, need your recommendation to set up mesh wifi.

I just signed up for unifi 300mbps and tm provided 2 DLink DIR-X1860Z mesh.

The router connected near to the modem can provide quite close to 300mbps.

However the other one which is in another room, can only provide up to 100mbps.

I guess this is probably because of the distance and size of the house.

Its a bungalow around 5k sqf. Any suggestions? Im considering Asus setup but not sure how and what to go for.

Thanks in advance.

Hi adrianteo,

DLink DIR-X1860Z is a AX1800 dual-band router. If you plug a LAN cable to the second unit(mesh node) LAN port and do a speedtest, you should be getting around 200Mbps.

The reason you are getting 100Mbps only is because the node are using the 5GHz as WiFi backhaul to connect to the main router and to your devices. This bandwidth sharing has reduce the WiFi bandwidth by half.

If you wish to get a higher WiFi bandwidth, you can try considering tri-band router. This is because the tri-band router will use the 5GHz-2 as WiFi backhaul and 5GHz-1 for your devices.

You won't have any problem with dual-band router if you are using ethernet backhaul.

Thank you

Can you recommend me a set up for tri band along with how many mesh unit i need? I dont have cable for the 2nd mesh unit. And my house is about 5000 sqf.

Thanks!

Hi all, need your recommendation to set up mesh wifi. TM provided a modem and also 2 DLink DIR-X1860Z mesh.

Currently considering getting XT8 because the coverage at my home is poor with the Dlink and the speed I’m getting is only 100mb (I have the 300mbps package but seems like Unifi will upgrade to 500mbps?)

Was wondering if i need to configure the TM modem or is just plug and play.

Also, will the XD5 work and be a cheaper option noting that this is not a triband?

Thanks in advance.

If you are talking about mesh node speed, XD5 will give you around 250-300Mbps when connected on the node.

XT8 will give you around 500-600Mbps on the mesh node.

The performance of XT8 is around double of XD5, hence the price is around double too.

ASUS is quite fair at pricing laugh.gif

Thanks for the reply! Side question, will XE75 better or a X95 in this scenario? The place where the router is going is around 5000sqf.

Appreciate the advice.
