I have a problem I hoping ASUSmy can help with.

I just bought a RT-N18U yesterday. Flash to latest available firmware and factory reset it as stated in first page. All the setup n everything went well at first. I configure my Unifi + IPTV and plug in two ethernet device (NAS and PC). And I have a media player connected via WiFi. No other wifi devices. Not even phone or tablet.

I notice something very weird and frankly doesn't seems right. When I am streaming local media from my NAS to my media player (good speed, love the 450Mbps), if i were to do speed test on my PC at the same time, the router will cut the wifi bandwidth wayyyy down. Example if I playing a movie on my media player at 60Mbps, once I run speedtest on my pc (unifi 10Mbps) which is connected to the ethernet my wifi speed drop to below 250Kbps and stay that way as long as the speed test is running. Same thing for other type of load like Youtube or even a heavy webpage.

I try to play around with some settings but didn't help. Please advice... thanks.

I flash version 3.0.0.4.376.3754 (latest stable) also the same.

Then i flash back the original oldest version 3.0.0.4.374.4983 and it is a little better now. It still behaves the same way like before where the speed drop on internet load but now at least the available bandwidth to the wifi remains high enough that while playing a 25GB file on my media player wont have any lag.

No I don't. But I plan on purchasing the router as soon as I've settled on a suitable NAS config. Your setup sorta mirrors my intentions and so I'd like to know if it's an isolated thing or public. If so, solutions.

Yep, its quite a normal setup.

Hi WhitE LighteR,

May I know what model of media player is that? And the speed you get, it is from the media player?

Thank you
*
The issue is not just due to the media player (Minix X8H). Link rate is N450.

Last night I have also tested with my phone (Sony Z3) and my tablet (Galaxy Tab 10.1). All shows the same behavior.

So far this is my observation :

Version 3.0.0.4.374.4983 - Original firmware. Internet speed is disrupted (worst) by local streaming on wifi. The wifi speed drop from about 8000KBps to below 2000KBps (better).

Version 3.0.0.4.376.3754 - Latest stable firmware. Internet speed is not disrupted (better) by local streaming on wifi. The wifi speed drop from about 8000KBps to below 1000KBps (worst).

Beta Version 3.0.0.4.378.6117 - Latest beta firmware. Same behavior as version 3.0.0.4.376.3754

Hi WhitE LighteR,

This happen when you do the speedtest? And may I know where do you get the figure where the speed drop?

Thank you
*
Any internet load actually like speedtest, youtube, http file download (not torrent).

I get the figure from :

1. Asus traffic monitor (quite useless as it didnt update that well, kindda hang hang on heavy load)
2. On my phone Sony Z3 I have a real time traffic monitoring small apps
3. On my media player I monitor via XBMC Codecinfo function (http://kodi.wiki/view/Codecinfo)

A little update on my case. As this is my first month with Unifi 10Mbps + N450 wifi, so its all new behaviour to me. I was on Unifi 5Mbps + N300 only last time.

So, I turn the Asus router into AP only mode and reconnect my old Dlink DIR 825 (Openwrt) as primary router. Did all the same test and observe similar behaviour to Asus. The wifi speed is about 60-90 and it drop once high Internet loads kicks in. They ding dong there fighting for resources on my Dlink.

I then tweak some settings on NAS and other stuff to simulate Unifi 5mbps and wifi 35-40Mbps (my usual speed on N300) and everything seems to settle down to the old behaviour.

So I think I hit onto some kind of limit probably on the both router. No wonder this days the router has so much CPU power. But the weird thing is the CPU usage on both router seems to be low. So i wonder what limit i hit actually.

Hi WhitE LighteR,

Thank you for your update, I will have a test on my router see I where able to duplicate the problem or not and update you ASAP.

Thank you

Thanks. But after all said and done, I am still using the n18u as my router and AP. As long as I dont drive the network too hard, my daily usage so far didnt show any significant negative impact yet. So its ok for me.

I did notice one thing tho. The QOS can only manage packet priority but not bandwidth sharing ratio. So sometimes when two pc downloading a file (port 80), the bandwidth is not equally distributed to both. Anyway, I've since move this QOS function out to another AP with DDWRT and connect the clients there (misc wifi devices). It works better there.

Hi,

Need an advice.

My friend is staying in a 3-storey house. He complains that sometimes the wifi signal on the 3rd floor is unstable (intermittent connection). Other than adopting the homeplug solution, can you recommend an ASUS router that can cover the whole house ?  icon_question.gif
Forgive me if this is question of mine is not in the right forum.

Thank you.

In my opinion 3 floor is too much for a stable wifi coverage. Try homeplug and connect another wifi ap upstairs to it.

Hi, your message with email address duly noted.

I've just emailed to your mailbox the Asus router setting file for further testing.

Thanks and warmest regards.

Your QOS is turn off or no? Make sure it is off.

ASUSmy

Just wanted to let u know I found out the problem with my setup already. Its not the Asus fault. Sorry for wasting your time. It's due to wifi interference from another access point.

Thanks

Hi WhitE LighteR,

Thank you for the feedback, our RD are fixing the problem now. In the meantime, you can downgrade the firmware if you wish to use the feature.

Thank you

Thanks for the feedback. Glad to know they are working on a fix.

I considered downgrade but I would loose all my configuration right? Can I download the current config, do a reset as stated in your siggy, restore old firmware and reapply the config after the downgrade?

Thanks

Hi WhitE LighteR,

Yes, you may do that.

Thank you

Hi. Just to give you and update.

My RT-N18U with the latest firmware also has issue with Unifi redial. Once Unifi is down, this latest firmware not able to detect the connection is down and so it wont bother to try to redial again.
This to me is more serious then the issue with the speed limiter.

I proceed to do some quick test with reset to restore the default config n do another manual configuration but that doesnt seems to help. So it really a buggy firmware.

I then downgrade the firmware using rescue mode(lastest firmware doesnt allow me to rollback to lower version) to the beta version firmware 9.0.0.4.380.2695

After that i reuploaded the backup configuration and now both speed limiter and PPPoE redial is working normally again. I hope future firmware version won't be as buggy.

Hi,

Since last we spoke, there has been 2 more new firmware on Asus website for RT-N18U :

Version 3.0.0.4.380.7378
Version 3.0.0.4.380.7743

But neither shows any bug fix regarding the broken bandwidth limiter on version 7266

May I know if the bug has been fixed and on which firmware ?
Also will there be a fix be out for the KRACK issue ?

Thx
