Hi AsusMy

Can you guide me on the configuration for RT-N56U?

Currently my home connection is NETGEAR WIFI ROUTER - ADSL Modem - INTERNET. I would like to change the NETWGEAR to the RT-N56U.

I've tried to configure it but can't get it to be connected to the internet. Can help?

Hi M@ximus,

If can do update the firmware to the latest first, you can download it from the link below.

http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTN56U/#support_Download_35

Version is 3.0.0.4.374.130

To update, go to Administration->Firmware Upgrade(remember to unzip the firmware you downloaded). If you notice there is interface after you update the firmware, please do a factory reset on the RT-N56U. You can do it by pressing the reset button on the router for 5sec or more then the power LED light will blink then release.

After finish all that, I can see that you are using ADSL modem so most probably you are using streamyx.

If you are using the quick setup, select PPPoE then key in the user name and password for the streamyx then follow the next instruction and you are done.

If you are in the main page of the router already, you can do the setting at WAN->Connection type choose PPPoE-> then put the streamyx user name and password at the bottom then apply.
Thank you

Hi ASUSmy,

Thank you for the fast response. I've successfully connect to the internet. I will try to update to the latest firmware tonight. Will the update wipe out my existing configurations? Because I've spent too much time setting up my home network when I switch to this router as compare to my Netgear. I definitely do not want to repeat all the troubleshooting.

Few things I notice,
1. If I select reboot from the Web Config, the router shows the internet connection is connected but I can't surf at all. I need to do a cold reboot (on-off) the router to rectify it. It happen 5/5 time I test it.

2. Previously I use Wireless mode - N-only. My laptop, apple tv, iPhones, and iPad log on to the network very fast. But now I switch to use Auto, and it takes them 1 minute to log on for all devices. I need Auto because my Printer only support up to 802.11G.

My current config are as below:
Wireless Mode: Auto
b/g Protection: Auto
Channel Bandwidth: 40 MHz
Channel: Auto

Hope you can advice me. Thank you.

Hi M@ximus,

For the first question, try update the firmware first and see it happen again or not.

and as for the Channel Bandwidth, try put 20/40MHz see it helps or not.

Thank you

Hi ASUSmy,

1. Upgrade solve the reboot problem.
2. Setting the Channel Bandwidth to 20/40MHz makes devices surf faster than 40MHz. After upgrade firmware, devices log on faster as well.

However I have to comment that the upgrade firmware of this router is a bit poor. Below are my observation:
1. 2.4GHz radio automatically off after firmware upload, firmware upgrade, and even config restore.
2. Partial configuration missing or replaced.
3. SSID name change to "ASUS" after upgrade! Password remain the same.
4. Manual assigned IP around the DHCP list wipe clean! I need to key in back.
5. Configuration restore failed. Keep hanging on the page with message "Settings have been updated. Web page will now refresh. Changes have been made to the IP address or port number. You will now be disconnected from RT-N56U."

Try reconnecting by renewing IP failed and directed to the page with message above. Need to COLD REBOOT the router. End up key in myself the configuration that are missing or replaced after upgrade.

Hi M@ximus,

Can I ask do you notice the router user interface changed after the new firmware upgrade? If yes, then it is normal. As mention on my first reply on your issue,

"If you notice there is interface after you update the firmware, please do a factory reset on the RT-N56U."

Because of the change of the interface, you need to redo all the setting.

Thank you and sorry for any inconvenient caused.

Hi ASUSmy,

I found another problem after upgrade the router. I can't FACETIME!!!

Previously before upgrade its ok, now both incoming and outgoing FACETIME call, either sides won't ring at all!

Any experience on this?

Hi M@ximus,

Try update the firmware to the latest and do a factory reset on the router and redo the setting manually.

If it still cannot then you can send back to the place you bought for warranty claim.

The latest firmware is Version 3.0.0.4.374.5656.

I actually did a RESET and the router is in factory settings. Now I can't even access the router. Care to give me the address for warranty?
