Hi AsusMY,

I am current user of DLink DIR890L and recently got VPN (ExpressVPN). I am thinking of doing full system replacement by getting a router which could be installed with the VPN app, based on EVPN website, the applicable models are Asus RT-AC56(U/R/S), Asus RT-AC68U & Asus RT-AC87U. The reason i am going for Asus (most probably 87u) is also to leverage on the AiMesh by buying two Asus routers so that the coverage is sufficient for my double storey house without having to manually switch whenever I go upstairs and vice versa.

My question:
1- If the router was bought in Malaysia (Unifi-compatible) and i perform the app install of ExpressVPN, will i lose the ability to connect to Unifi (probably due to VLAN missing etc)
EVPN Asus Guide

2- Is there any other router from the latest series by Asus that can similarly be installed with the App but ExpressVPN has not updated their website?

My apology if the questions seems too amateurish as I am just learning up on VPN and not an advanced networker. I am just worried that if i were to spend the money and buy I would not be able to totally leverage on the capabilities of my router and would have to go back to manually activating VPN on each devices as I am struggling with right now.

Hi Lord Suave,

The ExpressVPN APP provided by ExpressVPN are customize firmware to connect to ExpressVPN easily. The AiMesh feature will be gone if you use their firmware.  I would suggest you to have a look at the video below, this setup doesn't need to install the APP, ASUS original firmware will do the trick.

Thank you

wow, thanks so much for understanding my predicament!
decided now that will be getting AC-86U as my main router and AC-68U as my node under AiMesh or AC-88U as main and 86U as node.

Can i confirm that both 68U or 88U when act as main router, both 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz can be setup under one SSID and traffic would be automatically assigned to minimize the clog of bandwidth? also can i confirm that the node will not require manual activation of node when i roam into area of coverage?

oh btw, the main router will be upstairs and i have ran network cable to downstairs area where i could plug in the node to allow aimesh via ethernet

Hello, can you guys help with my problem.

So, I've a 2-floor house with total around 35 wifi devices. The unifi internet package is 800mbps and I'm using a stock unifi router only.

Now, the issue is some users having problem using the internet like the speed is so slow and sometimes the browser shows no internet page.

I suspect it is because the unifi router cant handle that too many devices.

Thus, my question is, is it enough to buy like one RT-AC86U and put in downstairs for all users, or buy 2 aimesh routers and split the users?

not an expert but from reading the earlier advisory from the sifus here, i went with the option of two 86u in mesh setup, the best awesome decision i ever made and ensured as much possible to go on LAN connectivity for devices such as Smart TVs, Apple TVs, PS etc

Just download it and upload it then perform a factory reset after that for the best experience.

ASUS already removed 3.0.0.4.384.81039 from their website due to multiple bugs.

just a slight guide, say if i backup my current setting and perform the above, and after that load the backup setting, all my settings will be intact right? critically as my cctv is using port forwarding and i am not very familiar with the setting up thus worried that i might have to call the guy again and pay him another 80 bucks for setting up something that is supposed to be so simple.

hello all sifu
I wonder if I go for ax11000 stand-alone unit or two units of ac86u to cover no dead spot for a double storey terrace ?
Just so I can deploy wifi network camera.

Ax11000 now on Lazada about 2k
Ac86u about 850 each

hi Asus team, since i upgraded my routers i realised that my VPN list with ExpressVPN intermittently disappear and i have to perform the setup all over again only to be losing it again. tried searching online but there seems to be no solution.

also at times, certain servers fail to connect specifically LA3 but that could be EVPN end of error but the disappearance and reappearance of the from the VPN client list is definitely attributable to ASUS. My two routers are AC86U setup on AiMesh

Hi Lord Suave,

Can you try factory reset the router and reconfigure it again? If the problem still persist, you may downgrade the firmware to the older version.

Just download the older version of firmware and update it manually.

Thank you

ok thanks will try that but will use my previous back up as i have settings for port forwarding etc done by my cctv vendor and they wont be able to come in to setup for us again until MOC over.
