Have anyone of you ever published something which is related to your thesis before graduation?

Let's say if you are carrying a small scale project using some variables similar to your PhD thesis and you manage to publish it prior to the viva voce examination.

Now, can you still claim you have a contribution from your PhD thesis if you yourself have published it prior to Viva Voce?

Nowadays, publications is a compulsory requirement for Viva Voce.
*
Yeah, its the case for the Biology field I'm in..
I've already published 2 papers 1st, then only write thesis (Plagiarising from own papers XD) hmm.gif

May I know whether you are pursuing the traditional PhD route or the PhD by publication route?  hmm.gif
*
Err... what do you mean "traditional" bro? laugh.gif
Traditional as in need to submit thesis?

UM actually allows students to omit the submission of thesis if they publish 3 ISI (Q1/Q2) articles iinm. I've achieved that requirement, but since my scholarship will give extra incentives for writing thesis, why not write? tongue.gif

Current trend has changed to publication route (3 ISI papers compulsary)

The reason why is UM is now fighting to improve its world ranking, one of the main criteria is the publication of ISI papers. That is why.

True that, and the standard can only become higher and higher rclxub.gif

It is not easy to publish 3 ISI. Are u studying Phd in Business and Management?
How long it took you to complete 3 ISI? U think it is easy to publish 3 ISI or do a final thesis?
*
Unfortunately no, I'm doing phD in Biotechnology laugh.gif
Published 4 ISI (3Q1, 1Q2) within 2 years, hope I can get 2-3 more before I leave tongue.gif

R u one of the lucky Bright Spark Scholar with full scholarship?
or i should say UM is lucky to have u for able to publish 4 ISI in 2 years?
*
Yeah, under BrightSpark laugh.gif How you know? You also from UM? rclxms.gif rclxms.gif
More like I'm lucky to publish 4 in 2 years tongue.gif

Yes, i just completed my Master degree with UM. So i knew abt Bright Spark.
My friends told me for Science field it is easier to publish ISI, but not for social economics related subjects.

I see, grats grats!! Graduating this Oct I guess? rclxms.gif rclxms.gif
Science, depends on the field... Bio and medicine pretty competitive... Engineering should be easier hmm.gif

brightspark KPI is it 12 papers? 4 paper during your phd study (3 years), the rest you will become post brightspark to fulfill your KPI?
*
The Brightspark requirements have been altered for quite a few times and I'm not really sure with the latest requirements already, but the criteria they've set during my time is 3 ISI (Q1/Q2) papers during the 1st 3 years, and 7 more in the within one year after graduating hmm.gif

i was considered lucky. my whole thesis = 1 tier 1 paper plus other side side co-author paper.
i think in biology field, is easier to publish that kind of "me too" paper but not a valuable paper la.
*
Agreed, Other people's work always seemed to be more valuable to me sad.gif
The Bio-related work we do here in Malaysia are not as high tech

Could you give some bio-examples of those considered meaningfully high-tech or futuristically valuable? laugh.gif

I remember you have a solid foundation in Bayesian Networks. Perhaps, combining with your technical expertise, you can find many useful applications in Systems Biology, and make a difference using the open-source R software.

Hey man, good to see you again notworthy.gif
Well, I've always fancied those who get the chance to learn and try out Next Generation Sequencing, whereas we are still stuck with the "conventional" methods T_T And of course all those biomedical and applied sciences which are often deemed more "valuable" research than what phylogeneticists are doing laugh.gif
I only know how to use the program haha, I have no idea how the underlying statistics for Bayesian Inference works XD
And I've also no idea how to use R too... I only know how to do some very simple statistics on R. The rest is just to complicated.. I prefer programs with a more user-friendly interface tongue.gif

Well I've been learning bit of R, but also mostly know basic stats only.

So are you working in phylogenetics as well?
*
Yeap, phylogenetics, DNA barcoding and a little bit of tissue culture laugh.gif
R is hard to use yo because of its command-style input system. Though many of the experts claim that it does offer much, much more flexibility once you get the hang of it (which I never did) sad.gif

Well the R command-style input is just an IDE method to make it user friendly.
You can also write it in scripts and run as such. I've run some scripts like that (sample scripts, not written myself).

Cool, I'm also doing phylogenetics  thumbup.gif
Did that for my masters and now expanding on it for my phd. But mine is more on evolution. smile.gif

Currently though I'm a newbie programmer in Python. So are you more involved in lab work or computing?
*
Ahh, you mean command batches? haha laugh.gif
Pretty handy stuffs~
But I'm using other bioinfo programs that are more user-friendly than R at the emoment la haha tongue.gif

Wah, good to know that there are also people doing phylogenetics here.
My research is more on lab work and phylogenetic inference. No programming and stuffs haha, don't know anything about those sweat.gif
