Me too.. but I had to put in a low profile G210 graphics card cos the on-board graphics cannot handle high bitrate 1080p mkvs (those above 8Mbps).

Most ppl usually use Media Player Classic as it support most of the video codec ( .mkv,etc.. ) .. and even support GPU offload to decode those HD content... 720p, 1080p

Downside is that it does not work with remote controller... I usually use my BT mouse for controlling the playback ... a bit of a hassle..

To use HDMI, u need GC that support HD audio output.

I am using a Yamaha RXV-863 which supports HD audio.
The EL1700 has onboard Realtek audio which does not support HD.
You will need a HD sound card to play the HD audio stuff.

Yes, I do play mkv files (720p or 1080p) using mpc-hc with DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) on HD 4200 IGP. Only with DTS 5.1 to my AV[R (non-HD Audio)...

IIRC, MKVmerge can support both TrueHD/DTS-HD recently in their update..

When I tried to play Bluray DTS TrueHD, the audio output via the toslink into the amp was detected as just a mere Dolby Digital.  Obviously the sound is not as dynamic as the DTS. 

In Amp like this, what is the audio format being played?  My amp does come with only DTS or DTS ES etc.. but not the latest DTS lossless format.

My mobo is the 785 series, no other added soundcard or graphic card.

Hmm, how much am I suppose to spare for the AVR and 5.1 speaker? As in the market price for a fair enough model

oh..you looking for GC can support DTS-HD/TrueHD now available is only ATI 5 Series. But this is latest series from ATI. confirm no low profile card available yet for now.
if your chassis cannot support full height card, you only limit for the option to get Asus HDAV1.3 Slim card which is low profile + any low profile GC to fullfill your requirement.

the spec show only PCI Express® x1 slot.

did you open the chassis to confirm can add in the discrete graphic card? how many PCIe slot or PCI slot?

Using ffdshow for audio as well as mpc-hc. If i drag the slider to anywhere, the audio is about 3-5 sec ahead of the video.

Oh, do u have anything checked on the Internal Filters of MPC-HC?

I just tried a BDMV with DTS-HD and all I got was DTS.
I'm definitely missing something here.

Another question. When I reformatted the PC, I removed the sound card as well but I've read that people actually install the Realtelk HD audio codec? Sorry if this sounds dumb, but does the ATI 5 Series card actually have an audio chip inside? I thought all it does is pass through the audio.  Again, if it does have a sound chip inside, do I need the Realtek drivers?

sure you can....as long as the old cpu support PCIe or slot available and PSU support the power requirement. no issue.

My HTPC that based on Gigabyte MA785G mobo with built in only GC and sound processor, the image quality actually surpassed my old Pioneer DVD player !

The only difference is that I am using HDMI cable for the Htpc, but using Composite connection to my LCD.  But the difference is huge.
