I use acer emachine EL1700 with pentium dual core for my HTPC.
Not so powerful but good enough to play 720p & 1080p .MKV file with DTS 5.1 audio.
Runing on Vista media center. Cheap and come with small casing. biggrin.gif

Me too.. but I had to put in a low profile G210 graphics card cos the on-board graphics cannot handle high bitrate 1080p mkvs (those above 8Mbps).
*
Where u get low profile G210 graphics card? It hard to find low profile card in lowyat.
How to get 5.1 sound from PC? Are u using black jack or HDMI?

Most ppl usually use Media Player Classic as it support most of the video codec ( .mkv,etc.. ) .. and even support GPU offload to decode those HD content... 720p, 1080p

Downside is that it does not work with remote controller... I usually use my BT mouse for controlling the playback ... a bit of a hassle..
*
Why u use Media Player Classic? Install K-lite codec and u can use windows media center to watch mkvs file.
U can control media center with remote control from Pinnacle. No more hassle.

Brand is Palit.
Cost is Rm158.
Place is Computerwar in SS2, PJ.

I use Optical out from mobo for sound.
To use HDMI, u need GC that support HD audio output.
*
Thanks for info.. notworthy.gif Are u using AVR? What type?
Can ur HTPC model, transmit DTS-HD/DTSTrueHD to AVR?

Because i looking for AVR, just wanna make sure acer EL1700 can support DTS-HD/DTSTrueHD sound.

I am using a Yamaha RXV-863 which supports HD audio.
The EL1700 has onboard Realtek audio which does not support HD.
You will need a HD sound card to play the HD audio stuff.
*
Are u sure? Because my spec they put this 'Embedded high-definition audio with 5.1-channel audio support'
I'm not so sure what its means.

U can refer here http://www.villman.com/Product-Detail/E-Machines_EL-1700-019

Yes, I do play mkv files (720p or 1080p) using mpc-hc with DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) on HD 4200 IGP. Only with DTS 5.1 to my AV[cool.gifR (non-HD Audio)...
*
Right now, all MKV movie mux with DTS/DD only. I think MKV cannot support DTS-HD. That why ur AVR just display DTS 5.1
Maybe have to wait other container than MKV to support DTS-HD. sweat.gif

IIRC, MKVmerge can support both TrueHD/DTS-HD recently in their update..
*
It is a new update? Because i try search, almost all mkv not mux with DTS-HD/TrueHD.
How about DTS-HD-MA? can MKVmerge support it?

When I tried to play Bluray DTS TrueHD, the audio output via the toslink into the amp was detected as just a mere Dolby Digital.  Obviously the sound is not as dynamic as the DTS.

In Amp like this, what is the audio format being played?  My amp does come with only DTS or DTS ES etc.. but not the latest DTS lossless format.

My mobo is the 785 series, no other added soundcard or graphic card.
*
I think TOSlink cannot support DTS-HD/TrueHD. Must use HDMI to transmit that particular audio.
Or ur AVR don't support DTS-HD/TrueHD.

Hmm, how much am I suppose to spare for the AVR and 5.1 speaker? As in the market price for a fair enough model
*
U can get yahama rvx365 with 5.1 yamaha speaker around rm1500-1700.
But this model don't support DTS-HD/TrueHD.

If anyone here use low profile (LP) graphic card? I wanna upgrade my GC.
I see all LP card need minimum 300W of power supply but my PSU is 220W.

Not sure i can upgrade or not.
BTW, I only use my PC for HTPC only. Not for playing game.

what is your current graphic card using now? what graphic card u looking for or upgrade?
*
What model of your GC?

Currently i using onboard GC Nvidia 7100. U can see my spec here http://www.villman.com/Product-Detail/E-Machines_EL-1700-019

I'm searching GC that can support Bluray and HD audio such as DTS-HD/TrueHD. Do you have any recommendation? notworthy.gif

oh..you looking for GC can support DTS-HD/TrueHD now available is only ATI 5 Series. But this is latest series from ATI. confirm no low profile card available yet for now.
if your chassis cannot support full height card, you only limit for the option to get Asus HDAV1.3 Slim card which is low profile + any low profile GC to fullfill your requirement.
*
Not available yet for now? Ayaa, quite frustrating sweat.gif . Maybe have to wait ATI HD 5450 LP to lunch soon. But dunno when it lunch. Refer here http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1202/1/ smile.gif

How much Asus HDAV1.3 Slim card LP price? notworthy.gif

if refer the spec of the link you provided. you're using onboard GeForce 7100 and there is very limit of I/O expansion slot.
the spec show only PCI Express® x1 slot.

did you open the chassis to confirm can add in the discrete graphic card? how many PCIe slot or PCI slot?
*
I did not open chassis yet. But i know it have one PCIe slot from the spec they provided. nod.gif
I will try to open chassis tonight to confim how many slot available and will let you know.

if you can, wait till ATI 5450 reached malaysia.

Hahaha, must wait. Hope it will reached malaysia next month.
From its spec, this GC is perfect for my HTPC in both video (bluray) and audio (DTS-HD/TrueHD).
It just consumes 19.1 Watts at full load. Perfect with my 220W PSU.

I already open the chasssis and confirm it have 2 PCIe slot (PCIe 16x and PCIe 1).

BTW, Try search HD5450 GC at ebay and its already on sale but only ships around USA only. cry.gif

Using ffdshow for audio as well as mpc-hc. If i drag the slider to anywhere, the audio is about 3-5 sec ahead of the video.

Oh, do u have anything checked on the Internal Filters of MPC-HC?

I just tried a BDMV with DTS-HD and all I got was DTS.
I'm definitely missing something here.

Another question. When I reformatted the PC, I removed the sound card as well but I've read that people actually install the Realtelk HD audio codec? Sorry if this sounds dumb, but does the ATI 5 Series card actually have an audio chip inside? I thought all it does is pass through the audio.  Again, if it does have a sound chip inside, do I need the Realtek drivers?

Thx in advance.
*
U need to update your realtek driver. At least to version 6.0 or above because it can support/transmit DTS and Dolby.

sure you can....as long as the old cpu support PCIe or slot available and PSU support the power requirement. no issue.
*
All new low profile GC need 300W minimum power requirement. But all new and existing PC that using small form factor casing have 160-220W PSU only. doh.gif

Small form factor casing such as e-machine (acer) and slimline (hp) using Flex ATX PSU. So upgrade new GC fo this type of PC is just a dream. sweat.gif

Just a short feedback.

My HTPC that based on Gigabyte MA785G mobo with built in only GC and sound processor, the image quality actually surpassed my old Pioneer DVD player !

The only difference is that I am using HDMI cable for the Htpc, but using Composite connection to my LCD.  But the difference is huge.
