New Y500 owner reporting in.

Just got it like 2 days ago.

Btw, im planing to either replace my HDD with SSD or add a mSATA SSD.

Have anyone tried mSATA SSD in their new Y500?

I need some recommendation, get mSATA SSD or replace HDD with SSD.

Hmmm... since the SLI is using the ODD slot... i was thinking of using mSATA since il need huge space to install games n etc.

240GB 2.5" SSD seems nice, but way too expensive. So i thought of using mSATA instead and leave the 500GB as game storage.

Anyone have tried using mSATA port? any idea of the Win8 score for it.

I see... is there any software that i can use to check whether the mSATA port available/usable in my Y500? and the types (Sata2/3).

Hmmm... anyone ever used the mSATA port so far? in Y580/Y500.

I need some opinions about it.

Kinda stuck in deciding about mSATA SSD and normal SSD.
Since im using SLI... il need more storage on the go...

Got question :

If i bought Y580 and i change the HD and RAM myself, will void warranty or not?
*
Nope. It wont, i ask the Lenovo service centre already. No worries.

Wanna share some findings i gain today...

LowYat... all the shop dont sell mSATA SSD... *sigh*

Spend whole day... and none of them have mSATA SSD...

Finaly... decided to get the standard SSD... but most shop out of 120GB... got 60GB and 250GB++ oni...

I wanted to get Intel 330 SSD... that one the entire LowYat dont have... *more sigh*

Came back empty ended... waste my money for the traveling and parking.

If international warranty then should be okay but for the warranty extension I don't think you cannot do it locally. Alternatively, you can extend the warranty online via the Lenovo US webpage...
1. Correct.
2. Correct. As the port for the original HDD is SATA3, you need to put your SSD there so that you can utilize the max performance, while moving your HDD to the ODD which is only SATA2 but it's more than enough to sustain the performance of an ordinary HDD.
3. Normally yes for Malaysian market pricing, but you can get equal value of mSATA unit for the equal capacity of a 2.5" SSD at Newegg. But do note that the mSATA for Y580 is only supported until SATA2 speed so this might be a bottleneck for the new SATA3 mSATA model.
4. Yes, just go Google and you can come up with a lot of stuff for that.
*
Hmmmm... if Y580 mSATA is SATA 2... then Y500 mostly the same ah? anyone got info... im using Y500 now... was thinking of geting mSATA since i plan to keep the currnet HHD as game installation drive. hmm.gif

anyone has got their hand on Y500 ultrabay accessories? particularly the fan? smile.gif

*
Hmmmm... havnt try it, but i think the fan would be preety useless... unless if the user decides not to use the cooler pad then it would be somewhat useful... but so far... even im using SLI... during gaming its ok so far... not that hot compare to my previous laptops... im using CM U3 cooler pad...

I have some idea to share... once after gaming n if u feel the lappy is hot, u can try use the "Dust Remover" options in the power management to blow the fan to max and the temp drops in 1min... haha...

Run "Dust Remover" and end process for the apps... will it stuck at that speed? anybody willing to try?  laugh.gif

I wonder if there's any speed controller software can force the fan speed to be high all the time???
*
The app wont stuck so far... its working great.... but there is one prob... it will run the blower in interval and last up to 2mins only... after that it wil stop. If wanna continue need click again... laugh.gif

But if we can find some software to control the fan like the lenovo management software, it would be posible to blast the fan speed as high as the blower. Can cool the laptop better... lower temp. But i afraid the fan might die faster too... haha

yup, thats why  im looking for local shop thinking can trade in
*
I wouldnt recommend it... unless u plan to use the i7 for computational intensive application.

Other than that, the performance is barely noticeable in all i7 cpu. Only benchmarking software can show the diff synthetically.. practically... all the same or more less the same.

I run 3D Mark 11 yesterday on Y500, with all hardware and drivers in stock. I got P3694 score.

Il try to run again with upgraded parts and updated drivers. Lets hope for a better score.

Note:
Nvidia 310 driver has issue on Brightness control for many laptops, i contacted Nvidia and they told they wil be a new driver 313.XX coming out this January, so anyone with 306 driver can wait for this new one. It supposed to fix the brightness issue and improve the performance as well.

cool, i'm debating to get y580 or y500,
but y500 dont have optimus means gpu on at all time, but if y580 swap hdd with sdd and swap odd with hdd should improve pverall heat system right? my next laptop need to serve me another 4 years
*
I had the same debate before, i didnt know which one to take... Y580 or Y500.
After many research and etc, i bought Y500.

Im very happy with it. The performance and etc is good.
If u wanna invest for long term, go for Y500... if u wanna change it again in the next 2 years... go for Y580.

Future games will have full support on multi CPU and multi GPU.

another way to decide is also depends on ur budget, if u have $$$ go for Y500... if u on tight budget, then go fo Y580.

But GTX660 and GT650 have not much diff, architecture and etc is same, only the clock speed is diff. overclock a little and 650 wil be same as 660. (For single GPU).

If u see 650 SLI, its on par with GTX675.

btw, its just my 2cent opinion. The choice is always yours. Both Y580 and Y500 is good. icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm not sure if there's a way to make it fast without plugging in the AC, but I believe it's performance limiter for power conservation even if you're on High Performance... the profile was designed that way... perhaps, if you set Dynamic Graphics will help? I dont know... never tried... could be the battery can't provide enough power for full performance as well...

even on high performance alone I can only use for around 2 hours, if gaming on full performance with battery, 30min only perhaps?  laugh.gif
*
Yup... its true, for laptop even if u set high performance profile... the system will try to save power whenever it can when it detects running on battery only.

If game, just use the plugin power... flex.gif

im still thinking wanna upgrade msata ssd or not, coz now win8 booting very fast  hmm.gif
*
Yup... the Win8 boot is fast!

but when i run multi tasking (Installing behind, word, excel, mp3, surfing) at the same time causes lag and some delay/hangs. cry.gif

So... with SSD supposed its fast... coz curently the bottleneck for Y500 is the HDD...

But i heard that mSATA port might be SATA2 oni... so i thought of using the standard SSD... so far no one from Y500 reported any info on the mSATA SSD.

mine come with mSata 16GB, this is the msata model SanDisk U100 Solid State Drive
this is the msata spec.
http://www.sandisk.com/products/ssd/sata/u100/
so it's SATA 6Gb/s = sata 3  icon_idea.gif
*
Hi, can you use HWinfo and post the SSD sata type. Coz if the SATA port is SATAII then SATA3 SSD stil runs on SATA2 speed.

Hmmm.. or u can try the CrystalDisk Mark / Bench 32 and test the mSATA Speed.

That can show if the mSATA runs on SATA3 speed.

hmm.gif I think the port runs on SATA3...

btw, is ur windows installed on it? or is it just a separate drive u can access?

Download from Microsoft site.
I wouldnt recommend upgrade from 7... a clean installation for Win8 would be better.
Look for Win8 ISO. smile.gif

meaning my msata support sata III?..
[attachmentid=3229683]

heres a screen shot from Intel rapid storage.. it shows 6gb/s.. not sure if it means anything..
[attachmentid=3229687]

so anyone can help me interpret?.. new to me.. cant digest.. lol

Awesome! so confirmed that the mSATA port for Y500 is SATA3! rclxm9.gif

regarding the windows 7 score, it wil be up since the max for Win7 is 7.9 whereas for Win8 its 9.9, so cant compare between them.
