was thinking want to raid my 128gb msata and 128gb of ssd, i realize the bios don't have raid as an option. sad.gif
*
You can't setup raid cause bios does not support it as you rightly said but you could use Lenovo's own express cache software. Discovered it works with the y500 even though its for another notebook model. Mine's been working fine with super fast boot times.

Lol, the express cache thing can't compared with a dual SSD raid 0 setup
*

Can ExpressCache works with two 128 SSD's? I know it sounds stupid. But, curiosity kills...

Yeah, I never know this don't support raid :3
*
Ya I suppose so. When doing research before I bought my mSata, I found out that the mSata slot runs at 6gb/s and the hard drive maxes out at 3gb/s. That means that mSata ssd will perform better than your sata ssd. For me I installed a 60gb mSata then with the express cache installed I'm enjoying <10sec boot times. I cannot imagine the notebook with both mSata ssd and a sata ssd. Now you got me thinking.......... whistling.gif

No.... I guess i need a cooler sad.gif even in Air Con room i got this shyt temperature.
*
That is not normal I would suggest that you sent your unit to the service center for checking. The SC in Lowyat, the service is quite good.

Maybe your thermal compound is getting dried, suggest send to SC. (Assumptions)

What's your idle temperature for your Y500?

*
From what I know thermal compound is not suppose to dry up. Either not enough is applied or its applied unevenly. Either way SC will be happy to look into it.

Seems to me maybe Lenovo has some QC issues because some units have no problem and while some has so many issues. May I ask for those of you facing heat (CPU/GPU) issues, are you guys covering the vents at the bottom of the notebook? Or maybe using the notebook on your bed? This could be the reason why your GPU/CPU heats up so much.

If you click "Dust Removal" in power options you can see how powerful the fans are in the Y500. Impressive if you ask me.

IDLE Proc 50'c, HDD 39'c, GC 45'c. (With switching on aircon)
is it normal, the difference very low ?

Seems ok to me unless you expecting liquid cooling results. whistling.gif

But when Dota2. Boost to 70'c.
I tot Y500 can run Dota2 easily?
LUckily i never buy Z500? if not 2years BOOM ?
*
Yes run games easily but you expect the air vents to be cool too meh? Like mine y500, when playing games the air from the vents are hot but the keyboard totally normal. When GPU and CPU working hard sure it will get hot, hot air means the cooling system is working well and if the keyboard is not hot means its not over heating. Well I'm no expert but that is my reasoning when comparing y500 to my old notebook. Mine old one gets so hot that even when you place your hand on the palm rest it hurts!

Even my friend's Alienware gets very hot when playing games, the only difference is that the air vents all blow to the back so you may not notice it that much.

mine gets warm too during gaming.

Is your WiFi card from Intel 2230 or Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG? Both of these cards are problematic, as for Atheros, I do recall you need adjust some settings manually.

If not because of Whitelist, I shall change the current WiFi card. Unless someone here manage to find Lenovo's Y500 FRU approved Intel 6300 Ultimate-N if not flash the mod bios is the only way which... I still don't get it how it works, only if someone willing to teach me how to do so :/

mine Atheros so far no problem with wi-fi.

If Y500/GT750m sli pop up together with Y400/gt750m around the same price in 1-2 weeks, than he will  mad.gif  vmad.gif
*
Based on this http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForc...0M.90245.0.html

The GT 750m is only slightly better than GT 650m. I do not think I nor your friend will be disappointed. In fact this will be a good excuse to press down the price with sellers cause new spec coming. Lets see if anyone can push the price down past RM3400.

Y400 user benchmarks shown GT750m(GDDR5) performance match GTX670m.  brows.gif
Its the fastest GT750m with GDDR5 as reported in notebookcheck.
Read here for more info: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2491914/+1446

GT 750M SLI performs up to GTX 675MX according to notebookcheck.  brows.gif

Yep and this is what that website says about the GT 650m sli
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForc...LI.84953.0.html

GT750m sli= GTX675mx
GT650m sli= GTX670mx

Both cards have the same amount of CUDA cores. Its just the clock speed that is different with the GT750m having a higher core speed.

Both are good GPUs, Not huge the difference. If Lenovo locks the clock speed like the current batch of Y500 with GT650m GPU, then the difference is not that much anyway.

That is why I would advise buyers to use the excuse to push prices down for the current batch due to new specs coming. Now that would be value for money. I kinda regretted buying mine end of last month else I would use this new specs to push down the prices then use the money saved to buy more upgrades like Corsair performance rams.

But i thought the 7XX series comes with gpu boost 2.0 or something like that.. but still i like ur reasoning.. save moneh on the laptop price to upgrade SSD and RAM is also a good decision.. helps improve the perfomance smile.gif
*
Click on my link to know the full spec of gt650m. Lenovo has disable all GPU boost so GPU boost 2.0 isn't a decisive factor.

Money saved can be reinvested on your mSata SSD, SSD and performance ram which will give you even more satisfaction using this great notebook.

QUOTE(holloway @ Apr 18 2013, 06:11 PM)
thanks for the heads up bro.. i read up on lenovo y500 and yep

quote from notebookcheck " However, it is too bad that the automatic overclocking GPU Boost (Nvidia's counterpart to Intel's Turbo Boost) is not enabled. Unlike other GT 650M laptops, the core frequency is not increased to a maximum of 835 MHz during load, but stays at 790 MHz. In return, the memory clocks with 1000 MHz."

Didn't know about it, not a lenovo user here..just putting my interest to this awesome laptop  tongue.gif . So yeah GPU boost is not a decisive factor.. although the SLI capability is really attractive. along with decent SSD and RAM. Its a beast. Just to reconfirm the msata slot is user-accessible right?
*
I figured they disable GPU boost to protect the notebook from overheating. You know some people play games with the laptop on their bed etc.

I can confirm that the mSata is user-accessible. Mine is an Intel 60gb. 30gb has automatically been allocated for Lenovo express cache. Balance 30gb I set for windows turbo boost.

FYI: If you want to install windows into the mSata you will have to buy another windows copy cause Lenovo cannot install Windows 8 into the mSata. I tried in the SC in Lowyat this is what they told me after trying a few times. Bummer if you ask me but with my current setup I do get very fast boot times and basically a snappy laptop.

oh regarding the windows 8.. to install on msata need to extract the key from bios/sata that they have preloaded on the mobo itself.. changing the HDD - > SSD and reinstalling windows 8 would automatically detect the key except different slot~ abit sucky i'd say.

I'm not so sure how my friend would like his lenovo to be.. but i suggest him its better to go full fledged SSD instead of mSata since mSata SSD is a bit slower compared to full 2.5" SSD especially samsung 840 pro~

thanks for confirming the mSata is user accessible smile.gif i'll let him know. Just have to wait for him to decide smile.gif i'm here just out of curiousity and helping him to extract every juice the awesome beast have! happy.gif
*
No probs. By the way, for your info, reading the manual and spec sheet, y500 2.5" SATA max speed is 3gb/s vs 6bg/s for the mSata. Either way its still blazing fast compared to normal hard drives.

Kudos to the efficient workers there.  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif
