The guys in Lowyat is really pushing y580 yesterday when I went. with a blueray drive asking rm3400++. At that price I would rather get the y500. Just wondering if there is any msata ports in the y500 and if yes can we use it when buying local set? Original reboot times are not very attractive so it either msata or change to SSD.
*
wah... that one is the old set....
should be 1 msata port in y500.. unsure.gif unsure.gif

i really dont understand what all this sequential read and write things mean. but it confuses me cuz normal SSD the write speed is somewhere around 500 and msata is 175. but the price is the same. now just by looking at the umber you feel oh.. the msata is lamer.. and maybe it is.. but in the real world does that number difference make much difference say for things like boot up time, or copying files? how much difference would there be between the two if copying a 1gb file or say files equalling 1gb from one location to the other and also booting up the PC? and would both of them still be substantially better than an HDD? or is upgrading to an msata to keep the HDD inside the laptop not worth the price as it would be to upgrade to normal 2.5 SSD?
*
the reason why mSATA & SSD price is almost the same bcos of the usability of mSATA... there's no need to replace the current HDD when installing mSATA compared to SSD... besides, mSATA can be used as a cache drive, means no need to reinstall/migrate OS into the mSATA...
there's should be noticable speed difference between mSATA & SSD, but if you look clearly, there's different type of sequential read/write. the normal one that you mention (500 vs 175) is usually applies for large file.. instead, there's another sequential (4K) that is used for smaller files, which usually applies for os stuff that actually affect the normal daily usage... unsure.gif
and yes, both mSATA & SSD are better than hdd in term of speed, temp etc.. except price laugh.gif
as for whether the price is worth or not, it is usually depends on the user and the machine itself... for example, y480/580 can use both method, either mSATA/HDD + ODD combo or SSD + HDD combo but for y400/500 they better go for mSATA/HDD bcos the standard caddy isn't appliable to both laptop. so, if they wanna use SSD, they have to remove the HDD & probably change them into external drive. besides, i dun think that y500 user wanna sacrifice their SLI configuration just for SSD/HDD combo brows.gif

That was my question as there any msata ports in the y500. Seems it does not come with any msata card. I intended to add one when I purchase it.

Overall the y500 is a handsome looking notebook. Feels very solid.
*
well yeah.. official malaysia set doesn't come with one... you have to get it separately

Hi all, new y400 user here.
I tried to play need for speed most wanted, but it seems lag. Really lag, what should I do? What's you guys setting for this game? I choose from highest setting to medium but still lag. My specs is i7-3630qm, 8gb, gt650m

What should I do to make it smooth?

Ps: my most wanted is copy from my friend which is downloaded from Internet. Anything to do with this?

So question above Y580 or Y500, which one longer lifespan
Y580 with integrated HD4000 and GT660M or
Y500 with GT650 solder to motherboard + GT650 SLI

TQ sifu, cross finger :-)

no one can perfectly answer for longer lifespan question....
there's a lot uncertainty involved in that one wink.gif

rm2660 + rm75 for another 4gb ram upgrade.

Eh how to reformat windows 8 if i intended to do so? Browsing through the net and not really understand the disc-less features.

Anyone?
*
go to pc settings -> general -> remove everything and reinstall windows (for disc-less)
or you can just get iso online and reinstall as usual, given that you knew your serial

Hi guys,

I got my y500 sli yesterday online. Having a problem though as I don't think my second gpu in the ultrabay is on/detected. I slotted it in and locked it in position, is there something im missing here? In my nvidia control panel I don't even get the option to configure SLI options. Any help is appreciated.
*
i dunno much but probably u can try clean update nvidia driver first.

New Y400 owner reporting in...
awesome lappie indeed
I notice the integrated intel GPU is disabled in Y400... lenovo might have reason for this.
I am planning to move my Win8 boot HDD to SSD and make that HDD as secondary data storage via HDD caddy (ODD slot). Are there any 3rd party HDD caddy for Y400 right now? can someone direct me to suggested seller? Thank u.
*
intel gpu/nvidia optimus disabled bcos it may incompatible with sli....
for now, there's no 3rd party caddy since the usual caddy is impossible with the dual bay slot

Guys,How do you do a backup using the one key recovery program provided by Lenovo?Do i create recovery disc with existing backup image or recovery disk with current system? When i try existing backup image, its says file valid and the path is D:\Lenovo\OneKey Recovery\backup.wsi. But when i do the backup with current system,It says it need 58 4.7GB DVD blank CD  blink.gif ..Does it really need to use that much?? sad.gif
*
I'm assuming that if you did backup with current system, it backups stuff including your installed programs, docs, video, musics stored etc....
Currently, what's your disc used space? If its match or approx same with the total capacity used (58*4.7=272.6) then the current system backup does really backup everything stored in your laptop.
Usually I just did factory default disc as it's less hassle.

hey hey.. I like my disk drive. not that I dont want any dvd drive. i have never used blu ray and I dont know when I will use one either. but I do use DVDs. I burn all my movies and tv series there. so no thats not happening. but yeah I could sell the blu ray drive and purchase a DVD drive. that could work.

storage I am not to concerned about since I do have 1.5tb in externals. but it would be nice to have some space in the laptop itself and nit have to carry an external all the time.

maybe Ill just try n sell off the 5400rpm 1tb and swap it with 180gb SSD. whenever it gets full i just burn some disks or put it all in my external. that could work too. and who knows maybe by the end of this year I can afford to buy blu ray movies and a 42 inch TV or something.
*
what for? hmm.gif hmm.gif
well, basically it's up to you... if you're thinking 1.5tb external is enough then probably kinda fine to swap totally your hdd with ssd.
unless you're really dependant of dvd, i would strongly recommend use ssd+hdd combo rather than sell your 1tb hd

answering your 4th & 5th question before, since you're using the old unit (blu-ray with 1tb hdd), you definitely have w7hp preinstalled instead of win8
there are many ways of migrating, cloning stuff from your hdd to ssd, but you could also just prepare factory default disc via one key recovery and just recover your OS files to your ssd
if you prefer to migrate/clone, i believe someone posted the steps before, either in this thread or previous thread
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

as for mSATA, i really couldn't answer it 100% as some said y580 bios lock it = no cache option => only as drive while some said can be used as cache

on a note, the preinstalled w7hp key is different from one that provided on the bottom.. this is because by default, fresh factory laptop usually installed with oem volume key.
