Brendan Rodgers has defended the way he uses Steven Gerrard, rejecting suggestions that the Liverpool captain is struggling to adapt to his manager’s playing style and insisting that his form will improve.
Gerrard was uncharacteristically jaded in Liverpool’s goalless draw away to Swansea City on Sunday and has scored only one goal in the Barclays Premier League this season. Whereas in previous campaigns the 32-year-old has been deployed in an attacking midfield role for his club, he has appeared to operate in a more deep-lying position since the arrival of Rodgers.
The Liverpool manager is hoping that the imminent return of Lucas Leiva after injury will give Gerrard the platform to get back to his best, but Rodgers maintained that the England captain’s talents are not being wasted by his present role in the team.
“I don’t think there has been a clear change in his game in terms of what I have asked him to do,” Rodgers said. “I think what Steven has been over the years has always been the player who makes the difference and, OK, he may not have had the goals this season that he has wanted but he has still been effective. There has been nothing more or less I have asked in terms of defensive responsibilities. Of course, we want the midfield players to score goals and go and get into the box and gamble, and we have seen when Steven has done that he is fantastic.”
Liverpool head into tonight’s game away to Tottenham Hotspur with their plans for the January transfer window already at an advanced stage.
Talks to sign Thomas Ince, the Blackpool winger, are at an advanced stage and Rodgers is hopeful that the appointment of Rafael Benítez as Chelsea’s interim first-team manager will not jeopardise a move for Daniel Sturridge, the forward.
André Villas-Boas, meanwhile, has in Jermain Defoe a striker whom he is determined to keep, and who he compares to Radamel Falcao, who played for the Tottenham manager at Porto.
“He’s been [scoring goals] for all of his life,” Villas-Boas said. “I certainly put him alongside Falcao.”

Nope. I can watch it very clearly. Why did we release Tommy Ince by the way? Irked. Now we gotta pay $6million according to the newspaper. Madness if this is the value they are asking.

We are getting rip off, left, right and centre.

well to be fair to the club..its not that we dont offer him a contract..he chose to leave coz he got better offer ie higher wages+chance to play 1st team futbol..its the same situation with other big clubs like barca..fabregas,pique,alba all leave barca in search of 1st team futbol

IMO we didn't play all that well and were really lucky. That being said, great substitutions by BR, changed the game. And doesn't Downing look comfortable in LB?

how many times we played well but still lost or drew?..about time we played not so well and got 3 points..top teams got this kind of result almost every month

Lucky lucky win, but I'll take it. Yesterday the midfield was completely overran by Diame N Jarvis, with crosses showering in from left and right flanks.

Completely owned by West ham until dillonyong almost gave up but somehow Joe Cole's equalizer galvanized the team back in contention. Add Diame's injury to the cause as well.

Shelvey still got a lot to learn. Losing possesion and misplaced passes. Joe "sideways" Allen hardly contributed anything to game except conceding the penalty. Raheem could have gotten a few but he will learn with experience.

Still got tonnes of work to be done in midfield. This midfield is probably the weakest ever in the past decade. With Gerrard approaching the last leg of his career we are desperately in need of a playmaker who can dictate and lead the play in the middle of the park. That guy is definitely not Shelvey at the moment but he will be definitely given 3 yrs just like the other blokes eg Jay Spearing.

i always wonder why do ppl spew stuff out without checking?
woy's short lived era was actually slightly better.
woy's win % at LFC was also better than what BR's currently is.

i think location also is TBC.
we got two choices, either join some established beer like tiger or heiney that will do some event...and which they will definitely do for that game...
or do our own smaller gathering...easier to find places to sit etc etc.
i would prefer the latter...so guess let duke see which of his friend's places are available...
sunway giza will definitely have something on...and getting a table etc is not going to be easy...and very likely it'll be overrun by MU fans.

winning percentage doesnt mean better midfield..our gameplay that time is hoofing from defense to forward..its the worst gameplay id ever seen from liverpool

True. I support long term stability rather than short term quick fixes and then land us in big debt.

My only 2 critical views of them was their mistakes in first, hiring Damien Commolli as Director of Football, an awful decision as we know now, then releasing Caroll to West Ham. They have done alot of good for the club but they must share responsibilities for these 2 blunders.

Other than that, I am happy that they saved us from the financial shamble caused by the 2 disgraceful yankees. I was never one that support spending big because looking at Chelsea's awful spending on Mutu, Kezman, Shevchenko and lately Torres, we have a big case study to learn from.

Clubs should not make costly mistakes if they want to sustain long term and it's been a while now since we are making healthy profit. Seems like we are still making a loss every year, which is not a good way to run an organisation. So I am glad they bring in all the sponsors and with the plan of getting more secondary sponsors which will definitely help to grow the profit steadily.

I dont believe we are lacking that many players anyway, to compete at the highest level. Once the players are used to the system and gel together with the newbies, we are there.

After the deadline day debacle, Liverpool are attempting to correct their mistakes by completing business early when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Two players strongly linked with moves to Anfield are Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge and Blackpool attacker Thomas Ince.

The Mirror and The Guardian both report today that Liverpool will secure the duo for a combined £18m, and will do so swiftly once the window opens.

£12m of that is expected to go towards signing Sturridge, a player Brendan Rodgers attempted to sign in August but the deal fell through when Liverpool wanted to loan the England international but the player himself preferred a permanent move.

Sturridge, 23, has struggled to hold down a place in the Chelsea side this season, making just 12 appearances, scoring twice. A Man City academy product, Sturridge’s most prolific spell in the Premier League was during a loan spell at Bolton in 2011 when he scored an impressive 8 goals in 12 appearances. His versatility to play either of the wide roles in Rodgers’ three forwards makes him one of the manager’s top targets.

Similar to Sturridge, Ince is also capable of playing either side of the central striker in attack. The 20 year old left Liverpool for Blackpool when his contract expired 18 months ago – seeking regular first-team football. He has impressed with 13 goals in 20 games for the Seasiders this season. Liverpool are believed to have a 35% sell-on fee as part of the original deal, taking the fee closer to £4m for the England under-21 international.

ince is priced at 6m.
if u read properly there is believed to be a sell-on fee of 35% which is what LFC gets as commission from any transfer dealings of ince to anyone, and in this case works out to around 2m...
so actual total LFC pays for ince is 4m, but technically he still has a price of 6m...
