She was your FRIEND? Oh my God. I feel for her. She got fired from her job just because of one facebook post. I feel that was really really harsh to end someone's career just because of public outcry.

Thank God I am not a public person. I joke so much, I guess I may end up losing everything.
*
Yup. Caught up with her again about 2 years ago when she came up to KL. In fact, she was going to make another trip here but as you may have guessed, it ain't happening.

It wasn't just one post. I believe she was having a debate of sorts within that post, replying to comments.

Whatever the case, it's pretty bad la and she isn't a public figure by any stretch of the imagination so Imagine if she was.

Like it or not, some issues are labelled "sensitive" whether you or I like it or not. I can say I think that the way to address these issues aren't to scrutinise it but in fact, to make light of it but what do I know? I grew up in a generation where we would make fun of one another's race and have a laugh. In fact, I don't much get hurt when someone calls me 'cinapek' but that's just me. I mean Russel Peters makes fun of Chinese and other races and we all laugh kan?

Sadly, it's always the minority that makes the loudest noise. And it doesn't help that the governing bodies are reinforcing it.

Just wondering though, when you said the government has spoken out against her, was it the Oz government or the Singaporean government?
*
The Singapore Government la. She became instant celebrity/hate figure over here. I had wanted to propose to her to be full time blogger and write a book. haha.

Just apologise and join some Muslim community for charity and then the table will turn. biggrin.gif

Kobe Bryant did not use it in public but got caught. Different. Fair enough.

Again, are 'gays' any lesser as compared to us heterosexuals? Why should it be in the middle of a banter?

I used to use it but after realizing that when we use it in banters, we are indirectly saying that heterosexuals are superior. Hence why I don't use them anymore. smile.gif regardless of the mood

So, by your logic, had Suso called Enrique a "girl" instead, would he be a feminist because he's implying that men are superior?

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong condemned the post, that's how big it was.

erm, I wouldn't know how would the feminist activists react.

But a girl differs from a guy, that would hardly be considered as an insult no? In this case that is.

Don't understand the fine. A warning would have sufficed. Why does the FA have to bother about footballers' twitter accounts these days? If they want to, they should learn how to differentiate what is a banter/joke and an insult.

But having said that, what's done is done. Everyone should carry on and get back to footballing matters.

This is a tricky one and I think it comes down to whether or not it causes an uproar amongst the public.

QUOTE
The sanctions meted out to Suso were welcomed by the Gay Football Supporters Network, but their chair Chris Basiurski said in a statement he thought the fine should go towards the fight against discrimination.

This leads me to believe that some form of complaint was filed and if he had used the word, "gay" instead and feminist groups unleashed all hell and brimstone, I reckon he would have been fined as well.

Unfortunately, the context and tonality is given little consideration especially when governments are trying to protect the rights of all, preaching equality.

I still feel that it's harsh to end her career just like that. If she was made to issue a public apology and pay a fine for disciplinary issue then probably it is justifiable. But to the extend of ending someone's career, that is pure madness.

Imagine FIFA steps in and ban Suso for 4 years from playing football. WOW.

See, this is the thing I don't get, why does it matter what the feminist groups think? I mean, I could start a fatties support group and if somebody calls another person 'fat' publicly, we could cause an out-roar too. In fact, we should ban the word 'fat' from all conversations! Am I being ridiculous? Why isn't my cause legit? I don't see us different from gay rights group... After all there are studies that suggest fat people are less likely to be hired in the workplace, that in itself is a form of discrimination. My point is, if we are going to take care of the feelings of everybody in the world, we are probably better off keeping our mouth shut in this growingly sensitive world.

Secondly, when it comes to judging one person's action, shouldn't his/her intention be a far more important factor? Why is it ok for stand-up comedians to poke fun at religion and race but it's not ok for somebody to use the word 'gay' in a banter? Comedians get the artistic license because in their context, their words are meant to entertain and not to offend. Is that no different from a banter? What harm does using 'gay' in a banter cause to the fight against gay discrimination anyway?

Just my 2 cents worth.

It's gonna take a long time to type this out properly, I shall just put it this way.

"FAT - A choice"

Mentally challenged - NOT a choice

Sexual orientation - NOT a choice

Race - NOT a choice

Not the best way to put it but I haven't had lunch so, yeah tongue.gif
