I dont think can just base on own experience ... Some ppl also claim super accuracy from their 7s26 wat.
*
i'm not saying all 7s26 are not accurate, maybe it's just my bad luck having a lemon. but when i first looked at the Mako, and read about the raving reviews on it's accuracy, i thought why not give it a try? I did consider Monster also, but that is at almost twice the price, and Mako's style is less aggressive which can be use as a dress watch, i was sold on it la... in future i'm considering to get Monster or 007.

Rewind a bit back up... looking again at the Orient that Chopin posted.

Is it really necessary to have that quickset date button there? I mean it sorta like throws out the whole proportion of the watch.
actually sniper does have a point. my personal opinion also inclined to think it is redundant, because the day is normally the least that needs adjustment. if this is to adjust the date, it'd make perfect sense. but then at least they make these 2 crowns can be screwed down. at this price point, i can live with this imperfection.

also, the band - it feels solid (solid links anyway) and is of the type of "Folding Clasp with Push Buttons and Safety Lock", very convenient, only minus is that is end links are hollow, and the finishing is not very smooth (edgy feeling - but they say wear for some time it will be smoothed), obviously it is not hand-polished - but again, for the price i'm not expecting that too.

Seiko 5 selling at only rm229
Worth the go?

yeah at this price it is worth it. but make sure not fake - more and more nowadays. 1 or 2 pages earlier Everdying posted that can get at 199 but models are limited.

No. Orient does make other calibers with single crown and quickset day and date.
I believe they still make these since they are still popular and in demand.

Seiko did stop production of Seiko 5 during the quartz revolution in the 80's for a short period but brought it back because it was and till today still in demand.

Out of proportion? Yes. But aren't almost all watches the same with the crown and pushers on one side?
Even our faces are asymmetrical.

http://www.orientalwatchsite.com/orients-i...watch-movement/

the above link introduces more abt orient's movement. the readers' comments below are quite worth to read - but bear in mind this is an orient site, so it is inclined to orient watches, interspersed with some negative comments on orient.

sorry for my excitement about orient at the moment, because it was so under the radar and i regret that i didn't appreciate its value all these years, didn't do justice to this excellent watch maker. but at the same time, i admit that seiko, citizen, and ETA all all great movements too.

i find tremendous satisfaction when able to spend the lowest possible, and yet get an item that's super worthy in value! kudos to those great watch makers that make great mechanical timepieces at the price of cheap quartz. hurray thumbup.gif

Well the story goes like this.

I've only recently taken an interest in watches which started after rediscovering my old Tag that was lost for many years inside storage boxes and learning about its origin etc.... result = poisoned by mechanical watches.

Anyway, one thing lead to another and I wanted a mechanical beater watch so I went hunting for the popular Seiko divers but they didn't really speak to me contrary to the internet photos. During this hunt... while looking at heaps of watches, its always the Seiko 5 military's that caught my attention.

I didn't get it immediately as I was put off by the Seiko 5 shield. As a watch noob, my impression of Seiko is that its just another mass manufactured el cheapo watch usually sold in uncle/aunty watch shops and Seiko 5 being the el cheapo version of an el cheapo watch until I read more about it.

Seiko 5 stands for 5 design principles:

1. It has the Diaflex unbreakable mainspring
2. Diashock shock protection
3. It has to be an automatic
4. Day/Date
5. Water resistant

Seiko 5 sub-brand itself has been around since the early 1960's primarily in Asian countries and the Seiko also have a history for making military styled watches (and real military watches for Japanese Imperial Army and war criminals alike )

Then it starts to make sense, here we have an affordable, unpretentious, tough as nails everyday joe nelayan, roti canai seller (before they become millionaires anyway) etc tool watch... with a display caseback (bonus for aspiring watch nut), great lum, backstory and a manufacture movement to boot... heck this is the perfect beater.... all for a measly RM400.

So I bought this... the SNZG13J stainless steel bracelet version.

user posted image

It also looks good on NATO and other straps as shown in this more professional review http://wornandwound.com/2012/09/26/seiko-5-snzg-review/

Other versions are also available ... bead blasted ones with canvas band and a black pvd bracelet version with lumed numerals.

So far I find the SNZG works with everything from selipar tat seng to dress down fridays. And I could've sworn that for some black magic reasons, the bracelet seems a lot more scratch resistant than my rollie.

Noteworthy moment is that its freeze resistant too....

Hi everyone,
I was doing some window shopping when I came across this Orient watch. The salesman tell me it is one of the Orient SP series.

It is priced at RM430 and a discount of 25% will be given. How do you guys think of this as a simple dress watch for dinner occasions? I am a fresh graduate now so budget is limited but of course they will be plans for future upgrades once my income is secured. Very interested in collecting watches so please guide me. tongue.gif

is it auto or quartz?

it certainly looks very nice and classy. a swiss that looks as nice will cost at least 5 times.

Chopin,
It is battery driven, we call that quartz? Not auto. I am also attracted by its looks too when I am looking around.

P/S: doh.gif Pardon my noobness lol. Still a newbie here trying to learn. blush.gif

quartz will be much more accurate and requires maybe once a year adjustment. but if an auto, it would be much nicer, as the mechanical movement inside is like a piece of art and craft, though it may not be that accurate, but my Orient has been accurate to about -2.3s per day, so i only will adjust it about once per month, not bad for a RM400 timepiece.

For the orient you showed, it looks nice whether it's a quartz or auto. but if i were you, i'll try to find a similar style one in auto, as i love auto more than quartz. just personal preference.

Do you have any other recommendations for similar style in auto? How about the price range? I am still looking around so I am open to any inputs as you all sifu here know a lot more than me. notworthy.gif

hi, i'm not a sifu, i just started to use auto watches since a few years ago only. there are many other here who are more qualified to be sifu. :-)
my current watch is Orient Mako, which is quite close to your budget, but it is not classy, it is a diver. sorry i haven't been checking out this kind of classy look watches, so can't suggest anything, it also depends a lot on your own taste. if you want a budget diver, then Mako will be one of the best model to start with.
I like to browse at lelong.com.my, just type "orient automatic watch" (or seiko, oris, whatever brand you like) in the search bar and a long list will come out, you can slowly search for a nice model that's within your budget. there are a few main distributors there: citytime86 (Sarawak), superbuy (selangor), Davies, and someone from Penang (Jenny?). I haven't bought from anyone of them, so can't comment on their realiability, but they have been around lelong for quite some time, seems to be ok. for other online sellers that are proven, you will have to ask those experienced sifus here.
I will also go to KL (assume you are from here) those bigger shops to look around, and compare prices, try it on your own wrist. I tried Mako in a shop, then bought it from a forumer later.
happy hunting, and let us know your results... :-)

the sg wang shop on the G floor (or 1st floor?) is the main dist. for orient. so far i have seen fake seikos, but not fake orients. fake or not, you hold it and look carefully, you should be able to tell from the finishing and the details. These proper shops would not be selling fakes.

haha, don't worry, even though sg. wang sounds not so high class, the watch shops there are decent, this shop that sells orient also sells seikos, titus, etc. same with the shops i saw in the mines.

swiss watches lovers would love these:

http://watch.chinese-luxury.com/watch/20121204/25068.html

too bad it is in Chinese, but you'd recognise the brand and model numbers. The site says these "only cost below 20,000 yuan (rm10,000), good for beginners.... " muahahahaha....... cheap for those nouveau riche of China i supposed?!

This is for some of the slimmest dress watches, of course, they MUST be all Swiss:
