is because those massive screen resolution. 2048-by-1536 quite huge, more than fullHD. apple push the A5X with quad core GPU PowerVR SGX535.
while for ipad4 use A6X with quad core PowerVR SGX 554, which more powerful and more efficient. should be less heat generated.
check with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerVR
Model Year Die Size (mm2)[1] Config core[2] Fillrate (@ 200 MHz) Bus width (bit) API (version) GFLOPS(@ 200 MHz)
SGX535 Nov 2007 65 nm 2/2 14 500 64 9.0L 2.1 2.0 1.6
SGX554 Dec 2010 1-16 8.7@45/32 nm 8/2 68 1000 64 9.0 2.1 1.1 12.8
compare the die size and the power it produce.
So far I feel iPad 3 is smooth enough.while for ipad4 use A6X with quad core PowerVR SGX 554, which more powerful and more efficient. should be less heat generated.

Do you think is that necessary for upgrading iPad 3 to iPad 4?
