For future reference.
Jet fuel prices dropped further in 2016, and AAX has now hedged 100% of its expected requirements for the rest of FY16 at c.USD56/bbl, and 45% of FY17 at c.USD58/bbl.

For 2016, it should be good move. Current price per barrel is around USD60++.
It remains to see if 2017 will be a good move since they still have room to maneuver.
Low cost carrier usually hedge their fuel price. I read, up to 75% is common.

In previous financial year, they were operating at loss with high fuel price.
Thus, expecting they will remains profitable for 3Q and 4Q.
3Q16 maybe marginally profitable.

Yup, its lower now compare with previously..
But seema like Saudi is threatening to increase output to flood the market.. So the fuel price could drop future hmm.gif hmm.gif

They can still average down for 2017.  biggrin.gif.
Oil price is hard to predict. As long as the cost is significantly lowered, AAX stands to gain.
Anyway, Tony Fernandes has been very vocal in social media about AAX turnaround. He also shouted 2017 is year of long haul.
This happened before/during 3Q16 preliminary operating statistic was announced which imo, very good.

TP RM0.49, BUY

Conclusion

MQ Research upgrade AirAsia X to Outperform from Underperform as MQ Research increase its TP to RM0.49 from RM0.33. The substantial revision is driven by earnings upgrades as the company’s ability to garner higher yields, while expanding in an industry seeing declining yields, has caught us by surprise. With four consecutive quarters of profit shown to us, MQ Research change its rating methodology from P/BV to 7.0x 17E EV/EBITDAR. MQ Research came away from a recent meeting with the CEO positive.

MQ Research believe the company will be able to sustain this profitability trend in 2017 as it maximises aircraft utilisation, leading to lower unit costs, and route maturity to drive unit revenue higher. MQ Research believe the earnings beat will be the main driver of the share price re-rating, with MQ Research’s revised FY16-17E PAT 7-55% ahead of consensus. The stock currently trades at 6.7x 17E enterprise value/expenses before interest, tax, depreciation, amortization and restructuring (EV/EBITDAR) vs its average of 10x and AEJ peers’ 6.6x.

Impact

Maximise aircraft utilisation. The company is guiding for a ~30% capacity increase in 2017. While no new aircraft will be added, capacity expansion will be driven by higher aircraft utilisation of 16 hours from current 14-15 hours. New capacity will be utilised for 2-3 new destinations and frequency increases.

Routes achieving maturity. Of its 21 destinations from Kuala Lumpur, management cited only KL-Perth to be faring poorly, mainly due to an aggressive newcomer. Its China routes were the star performer in FY16, and MQ Research expect minimal competitive pressure on its China routes in the near term due to airport congestion. KL-Busan has finally turned around after five years.

No impact from PSC hike. Management did not see any demand impact from the 1st Jan 2017 passenger service charge (PSC) hike (from RM32 to RM50). PSC represents ~9% (from 6%) of AAX’s average fare.

Positive operating cashflow and net cash in FY17E. With no additional aircraft until 4Q18 the earliest, MQ Research forecast the company to be in a net cash position by end 2017. Net gearing stands at 0.8 as of Sept 2016.

Risks to MQ Research’s recommendation. Weaker yields (-1% pax yield = -17% 17E PAT) and weaker Ringgit (+1% US$/RM = -18% 17E PAT).

Earnings and Target Price Revision

MQ Research lift FY16-18E revenue by 14-30% and incorporate better-than-expected yields and faster-than-expected capacity growth. MQ Research change its methodology to 7.0x 17E EV/EBITDAR from 1.5x P/BV to derive a TP of RM0.49/sh.

AAX now gets license to fly to the US, the first low cost airline in Asia to do so...

Will this further boost the share price?

Moved up to 42.5 cents just moments ago..
