Panther would be better than Jaguar definitely...but i dun think Tiger is that suited for your iBook...if you have a large HDD...try to use Panther for CS and other X appz...other than that use back 9 to run old appz...it's a lot faster for your PB G3...

Tiger is a memory hog, especially with Dashboard running in the background. You're better off with Panther instead....

I'm running Panther on my Powermac G3 300Mhz. Yes u read it right 300Mhz. But i have load up 680MB of RAM. So 10.3.9 run without problem. A bit laggy when open up drive because of slow bus speed. Other wise is ok. But I didnt do work on it, it's my file server at home smile.gif

If you want to run Tiger on ur iBook, disable spotlight & dashboard. load up ur RAM.

Yep , I suggest you to move to Tiger

Tiger is a RAM eater , if you open Dashboard up..thats it...Panther should do a good job , you could try Tiger too..It should run "okayy"

When i get this iBook , inside many data , applications , start up items blink.gif . When i boot up OS X , it seen to be loading many data and take long time to start up blush.gif , but when OS 9.2 it will start up "extreme" fast thumbup.gif ! Thats why i need to format the HDD ,and try Tiger or Panther . I now downloading MAC OS X 10.4 CD version from BT .

I have facing a problems is , the all file is "CD1.dmg , CD2.dmg , CD3.dmg , CD4.dmg" will it booting when i burn directry to disc? i mean i am using PC download and PC burn it too... (iBOOK G3 does't have CD-RW rom) cry.gif .

change ur iBook's HDD to a larger and faster (5400rpm) HDD and bump up the ram, that alone should be enough to help speed things up

your iBook's HDD speed is 4200rpm for sure.
A G3 500mhz = P3 1Ghz? I'm not sure... probably.

I know that my 667mhz G4 Powerbook can still run World of Warcraft but laggy. hehe RAM wise, you can try testing and see if ur iBook runs ok (without kernel panic) using PC Ram. Other than that, ur's an iBook so I doubt that there's much you can do to speed things up by a lot. Just stick to using OS9 and older software la.

Start >> Run >> "msconfig" can on\off startup loading items.

Ctrl + Alt + Del = Task Manager?

you can opt to format and install or jus install straight...if the latter is the case your OS9 will just become the classic mode...you won't lose your data...

if you opt to format...you either have to reinstall OS9 for classic mode or just dump in a G5 additional install disc if you can find 1 to reload classic...but might not boot up OS9 or may lose some components if bootable...

but i think a clean install is better...

no, for OS installation u need an Apple Certified CD/DVD-ROM drive. Meaning those OEM drive that come with your mac. If your old drive are giving you problem, try borrow your fren's mac and install from there. Just get a Firewire cable, connect both mac. Restart you mac by holding "T" key. You will see your drive mount on your fren's mac. Proceed the installation by choosing you drive as target.

oh i just saw ur previous post. you should change the "Startup Disk" in the preference to your hard disk. You should not boot to the CD in this way. Another thing you should check is that the CD is working or not. Try to run it on another Mac. The CD should run as soon as you double click "Install Mac OS X" icon. Then it will ask u to Restart.

YOU SHOULD HAVE ADMIT it in your very first post that your cd is el-cheapo prates from lowyat. For PC software, u can go lowyat. For Mac, pls rely on frens or from the net, or get the proper one from Apple reseller.

And I think you can close this topic now.

I've just bought an ibook g3 500 dual usb version.
http://secretmayarecipe.blogspot.com/2006/...ple-desire.html

well... it took me a week to find the required dvds to install panther and tiger in it. at 1st i'm quite satisfy with panther. But i've heard that tiger can actually runs smoother than panther. thus i took the chance and installed tiger in it.
honestly, it's isn't really that snappy. and yes widgets don't run that smooth compare to current hardware.
but i find that it's quite useful for my "leisure" (messanger, surfing, itunes, microsoft word, blogging) machine when i use it while watching tv or playing video games.
I still got my Ferrari 4000 beside when when i want to do some serious work.
Spot light is quite useful as well because i feel that the search function respond very quickly. I think it even smoke my ferrari 4000 running search in xp.
Anyway, to my surprise. the ibook actually has got a pair of very nice speakers. It's even perform much better than any pc laptops that I've ever used.
I've tried osx86 in my ferrari 4000. and end up with everything working except sound for now. Since i'm very comfortable with mac now. I guess i'm ready for a switch now.
I'll get my mac book pro by next month.

well...
shift + command + 4 and drag a selection on desktop can make screenshots in portion. instead of the whole screen.
i find this to be very useful for print production or designer.
no wonder alot of designer likes it so much.
I've a friend working in padini. they only got pc for their design dept. so everytime when they want to copy source material from website, they always have problem with print screen. but in mac, they can have option to print whole screen or portion with short cut key. and the file output is instance, no need to launch a 3rd party software at all.

I'm going to buy a new macbook pro to accompany my exisitng pc laptop for most of the work.
plus, there's a possibility to install window xp to dual boot with osx in macbook pro and imac with intel processors now.
check it here.
http://download.onmac.net/

Well... of course, booting osx in pc is also possible. but the hardware is a little choosy. so some of the devices is not working.
for my case, my ferrari 4000 got everything working including air port but the sound isn't working.
I love this os so much and i've decided to buy macbook pro because of this. so don't blame me for trying out osx86. truth is, it does encourage me to do the purchase.
and of course, the cheap ibook 500 is also a good opportunity for me to understand that a 3 years old mac product can still be in such good shape. Kudos to apple computers.

Cheers.
(hope the info helps.)
