I think the iPod Touch and the iPad Mini will have different markets to cater for. The Touch is much more portable comparatively and has Retina Display. But if you think in terms of value for money in that you are getting a bigger display (but no Retina) for almost the same price or slightly more expensive, then it's a different story. All depends. Like my niece (teenager), I don't think she would want to lug around a 7.9 inch tablet when she is out with friends or shopping. Or if you are the type who likes to strap on something small for music while jogging or exercising at the gym... how to strap on a Mini! Of course, ideally, I am sure people wouldn't mind having BOTH the Touch and the Mini! LOL!

But yeah, current iPad 3 owners really must be feeling "tulan" right now. Their only comfort would be at least all of the docking accessories out there still works with their iPad 3 without any bulky adapter!

Hi guys,

Just wanna check real quick, if i were to root my device with Nexus 7 Tool kit, will it wipe my Nexus?

Can't seem to find ne info on the XDA thread about this. As for as i know previously we need to wipe before rooting right?

thanks in advance.
*
To put it simply, to root is actually a 2 step process. First you have to unlock the bootloader (you can do this through the Toolkit also). Without an unlocked bootloader, it is not possible to root the N7. The unlocking of the bootloader is what is gonna wipe out all your user data.

I read over at XDA that there used to be a method for you to root without unlocking the bootloader. But it is a complicated process, as far as I am concerned. In any event, this method apparently no longer works for Android Jellybean 4.1.2 Build JZO54K onwards.

Rooting using a Toolkit is so much easier. But it will unlock your bootloader as a necessary initial step, and that is gonna wipe your user data. BUT, please make sure the Toolkit you are using supports your current Android firmware build. Otherwise, you will run into all sorts of confusing obstacles and you may end up with a Nexus 7 paperweight, if you are not careful.

Try this:

Volume+ (Volume Boost) by Meltus

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?...e=search_result

But increase the volume booster gradually

You've read page 1. You doubt it. Then you ask the people in the same thread having that same page 1. I don't understand you.

Guys,

I need some help from the forummers who has had prior experience. I plan to ask a relative to get the 3G version for me from the US. What sort of obstacles can I expect when she brings it in?
1. Extra tax? AFAIK, it may not be taxed as a cellular device if it doesn't have a phone function. Is this true?
2. SIRIM obstacles?
3. Would it make a difference if my relative brings it in without the box? I.e. she can just say it is her personal device.

Jpaq,
If you would like to have a brand new out-of-the-box experience then be prepared for the item to be queried - this of course depends on how the item is presented / or not when your relative brings the item in?

Make your life easier by unboxing the item, dress it up in a case (get it there in the US cos the selections here in KL is still rather....... thin) and says (if asked) its a used item. Nuff said.

Others might want to offer more opinions.....
*
Thanks for you reply. That's what I was thinking too. Screw the brand new out-of-the-box experience! LOL! Unbox it, remove all whatsoever wrappers, switch it on, log it in to a Gmail account (hell, install some apps) and say it is a used item and it is for personal usage. I already have a casing and I can just pass that to my relative to carry the unit in too! Hope that works!

Based on my experience, most of the times they won't check the content in your laptop bag. You can just tuck in the box in the laptop bag.

But the best bet is to follow your suggestion.  smile.gif
*
But the box is really rather bulky... laptop bag also kenot fit the box. I would probably have to ask my relative to leave the box behind... cry.gif

Ask your relative to go to US Postal and have it post back to Malaysia. I believe the postage won't be that expensive for an empty box.  biggrin.gif

Thought of that too! LOL!

Why go through all these trouble
There is no duty n import tax for tablets into the country
I even bought a notebook back from USA back few years ago. Just inform the custom is personal use as only 1 unit
I bought 2 handphones from spore n gladly show the custom too. He just wave me through
*
If laptop, memang no tax. Non-3G version of tablets should fall under the same category. So no worries. But if they categorise it as a tele-communications device, then I dunno. I have no idea whether a 3G Nexus 7 would fall under that category. However, you brought in 2 handphones from Singapore as well and you showed it to them without problems? Interesting... I always thought things like handphones were taxable...

Handphones also no duty n import tax
Most custom hold it n you pay rm100 for sirim permit
I travel a lot overseas n seriously most of time custom don't bother if you buy only 1-2 units electronic stuffs. Worse thing one can do is to hide such stuffs
*
Ohhh... so worst case scenario is kena extra RM100 for Sirim permit... okok. Thanks so much for you info, Benny.

If sell the 16GB version (2nd hand), memang rugi a lot. But I am not gonna keep 2 Nexus 7 tablets. Might as well sell it to subsidise my purchase of the 3G version. Try to cut cost by getting someone to bring back for me from US. At least save a bit bit on shipping and any mark up.

Anyway, 16GB unit is practically brand new... got it as a replacement unit just last week and the warranty starts afresh! Hopefully this fact will give me a few ringgit more on the price. I'll probably sell it for between RM600 to RM700. See how.

The 3G version will be made available by Google only on 13 November. So don't expect Newegg or anybody to know the ETA for Malaysia before then.

SIRIM is about RM100 (good for 3 gadgets). So max should be RM100.

Try this: http://www.service.asus.com/#!Tablet%20Warranty/ctzm OR http://www.service.asus.com/warranty.aspx#...20Warranty/ctzm

Of course, the links above are applicable for the N7 bought in the USA only

- portable

shld i get nexus 7 or ipad mini? y? tytyvm

Nexus 7. Especially if you watch youtube a lot. After all, who owns youtube? rclxms.gif In addition, it is so much easier to get your media stuff onto a Nexus 7. With an iPad, every damn thing must go through iTunes. Nexus 7, with the Android OS, is just so much more flexible.

The only drawback I think is relevant is the lack of space and microSD slot.  Honestly, the lack of camera has no negative effect on my mental health as shown by many critics. In fact, it's better this way. With my iPad I constantly am very aware of the lens so I don't dirty it while handling. Yyou'd look pretty silly holding a heavy device over to take a picture. Reminded myself of a wedding. I was next to the VIP table and there's this lady came all the way up to take pictures with her iPad. She looked so ridiculous compared to the other photographers I couldnt help laughing loudly.

Found an awesome pic

Have purchased a Nexus 7 32GB 3G through a relative in US. Bought online and delivered to New York. Has been delivered and now sitting there at my relative's place in New York. Happy and sad. Happy cos' managed to get one unit and safely delivered rclxms.gif Sad cos' my relative only coming back in another 3 weeks time! cry.gif LOL

However, not very cheap because of the tax in New York State. It is a whopping USD27.78. Shipping charges to New York is another USD13.99 (according to UPS tracking, it delivered from Louisville, Kentucky, then to Newark New Jersey then to New York - 2 day shipping). All in cost me USD340.77, about RM1043 (at exchange rate of 3.06) or about RM1056 (if rate is 3.1). The state tax really kills. There are some states where there are no tax or cheaper rate of tax. Too bad mine was New York in this instance. But I can't complain too much, otherwise dunno wait until when only see the 3G model.

So if you are looking at the 32GB Wifi only model, faster grab from Newegg. Cheap. Too bad Newegg not offering the 3G model yet. But if you are aiming for that, faster grab from Newegg once they offer. (USD299 x 3.1) + RM49 = RM975.90 only. This is assuming no SIRIM charges. If kena SIRIM charges, add another RM100 = RM1075.90. Still ok. Not sure at all whether will kena Sirim or not, in any event.

But I seriously wonder how does Newegg make money...? And how come they can't offer the 3G model when it is readily available from Google Play?
