QUOTE(zeusu @ Apr 14 2008, 03:56 PM)
well OFS1 is basically like an orientation for SLB (1-2 weeks depending on location), you'll get to meet ppl from other locations & different departments, go for lectures about QHSE & SLB's training structure & resources, department managers or somebody quite high up will also be there to explain your career path & what you'll be doing, get your laptops, prepare your bank accounts (I'd recommend Citibank GEB, unless you can qualify for HSBC Premier/you have an HSBC account in Brunei/you're interested in offshore savings), sign the contract, do a driving test, (and for some, defensive driving school), etc.

Mine was done in KL, in Renaissance Hotel. Some ppl did theirs in Dubai/Abu Dhabi/Houston/Melun/Rio de Janeiro/etc; depends on where you are posted. It was really fun and it's a good opportunity to know ppl who'll be in your same location. Basically, giving you a good time, before they ship you out to the "wilderness"...lol

QUOTE(warezmastr @ Apr 15 2008, 02:26 PM)
I have a friend working in O&G... this is the story:

As a fresh grad, you earn RM2xxx
After one year, you earn RM3xxx

It is normal. After five years, you will definately earn 5 digits...

Bonus depending on the company. Some give 6 months (like Petronz), some give based on percentage of your annual income, it varies.

If you work offshore, you will be paid more. Additional half of your monthly salary, or around that. reason being:
- Its very risky. HIGH risk.
- when you fly using helicopter, if the heli crashes, you die
- if you use boat to transfer, if boat sinks, you die
- to transfer from boat to platform, you need to 'tarzan' to the other side. if you slip and your head knock the steel, you drown/die/bit by big fishes
- when you work on the platform, totally no life. there is astro, tv, food, gym etc. but imagine you work in an environment as big as your house in two weeks. you dont see anything out there, just the vast emptiness of the sea. its very stressful, and in some cases, people go nuts
- if you are a contractor, you have limit to call home. can only call 2-3 times a week (maybe)..
- if you are a contractor, if you are forced to work more than 4 weeks, you can go crazy
- no hang phone coverage
- only a few computer to surf the net. 100+ people using it
- if you work on a drilling rig, if there is a blowout, you die

and finally
- if you work too hard and go back home less, your gf find other guy, leave you, you die

hahaha.

so why work with o&g? cuz they pay good? is that your justification of a good job?

think again.
*
haha... you got some point there, but i would say that O&G is certainly far more better than lots of other industry outside.

For other companies:
1. fresh grads' avg salary 2k
2. no allowance
3. stick in the lab/factory/ office as well
4. doing same thing over and over again--->boring & no life
5. Some job need u to work more than 10hours per day but only get half og the pay given by O&G companies
6. risk in some jobs, eg: chemist--> exposed to chemical stuffs. if explode accidently, also die--> life's a fate, if destinied to die, sure will die regardless of how, where and why.
7. After 30 years, pension, not even enough for the rest of the life, think about goin travelling? better dreams when sleeping

NO MONEY---> DUN EVER SICK, if sick, better die directly than suffer
---> No dreams, no big houses, no fancy cars, nth to enjoy, imagine, born into this world eg: for 70years, doin nth but study, work,
nth to enjoy, no money for travelling etc
---> Wan to own a business after working for 10years? think again and plan. money? experience in business?
---> dun even think of want to give family a better life, no money no talk

There are certainly many industry which u could earn a lot, eg
1.network marketing, but too many ppl have negative view on it, pandek kata, coward malaysians, especially, dun even dare to know what it is.. some even say tat its a scam, cheat ppl's money etc.. sorry, system=dead, onlp ppl cheat ppl. so nth's wrong
2. Insurance, need to find customers, some ppl dun even know how to talk
3. Financial planner, more or less need to find customers also
4. business, no money no talk
5. etc

Life is not only about urself. how about ur family? ur parents? your future kids? Its about responsibility. Sometimes u need to sacrifice in order to get sth better in your life. Like kevinling said, no pain, no gain. This is one of the industries which makes u really tough, both mentally and physically, at least you're paid with all the 'pain' u gain through out the process. i believe if one could survive in this industry, he or she will be able to survive in other industries as well. Hence, why complain when O&G trainu to be better and gives u money, thus, dreams and better life etc.? laugh.gif and not all ppl work for rest of their life in O&G. It is also a stepping stone and financial foundation source for your other future planning.

Why not? Lots of oil and gas companies, including oil and gas service companies have loads of data to manage, run servers round the clock around the world, their own staff's IT services to manage, etc.

Yup, Waremastr's outlook on life is too narrow leh... There are 1001 ways to die, drive your car in KL, can also easily die wut... Just pay enough attention during your Helicopter Underwater Evacuation Training and Basic Offshore Safety & Emergency Training, then you'd be all right laa. The rest is all just fate...

Taking my last survey, just TD the well out here in Qatar's finest location - middle of the dessert! Cheerios...

Hi Kevin & Christine,

Yes - I am with BH INTEQ. LWD field engineer based in Qatar, on rotational. Life's good, but USD depreciation affected nearly everyone in this region dealing with Oil & Gas! I call it involuntary pay cut... Sigh...

Well, soon you both will join the ranks in SLB, and I can only wish you both the best. Oh yeah, safety driving courses, offshore safety and helicopter emergency training - you'll love those things...

I am getting so weary of tomorrow's prospect, rigging down...
*
yea... USD's value is going down.... Kevin keep complaining bout that too... laugh.gif thanks for youw wishes and yea, looking forward to all the trainings and prospect that will be offered by slb.. cheers! icon_rolleyes.gif

That's a lot of choices...but are they all overseas companies? I dare not set my sights too high, was hoping to get placement somewhere in Malaysia but I don't really know the proper way.

So far I have explored some companies website such as Exxonmobil and Cameron and found that all of them have online systems where you submit in a resume. I'm still a student, haven't had working experience yet so I don't know what to include in my resume. Anybody been down this road before and can share or point me in the right direction?
*
hey ya, tell u something, confident is a very important point.... every company look forward to have employees with high confidence. u should believe that u have the qua;ification to get into any of the companies regardless whether its oversea or a local company. try out all the companies, be confident and show ur willingness to learn. Yes, u're still a student, but that doesnt means that u'll not going to be 'somebody' sometime in the future. u know what, i've been in Shell fpor internship last year... when i check back with my seniors, i heard that none of them have ever go for internship in Shell. i asked y? they said, 'errrmmm... tat is a big company, i dun think they will accept us'.... my God..... they din even try..... when i went to Shell, the employees there told me that they have been waiting for interns to come for years, but there's not much student that had applied for any intership program wt shell.... so, could u see the point? dun say no be4 u even try... it will only be a waste of chance. Maybe you're able to get in any of the international companies, but u urself who jeopardise the chance... relax, and be enthusiastic if u wan something better fpr urself. cheers and good luck! thumbup.gif

my friend went for shell srd before. she said that the most important thing that they are looking for is your ability of looking for long-term solution in every question given by them. also, they wan to know whether ur management skill is good or not, that it, whether or not u could differentiate or determine the real important point in any of the situation given. smile.gif u'll be questioned a lot, but just be relax... otherwise, u'll really feel stress bout it... be ypurself and dun try to be smart... give the answer after u think bout it properly, coz they will always see whether there's any contradiction in the answer given by u. they're really pro in determine whether u're telling the truth or not... tongue.gif

QUOTE(allenultra @ Apr 24 2008, 01:52 PM)
HR = Human Resources.

I'm from UTP, undergo my internship now.
I have met a lot seniors who holding the scholarship.
At first when I joined in UTP and I din get the scholarship, well I was a bit "unhappy" or disappointing but I don't find it that way anymore now.
A lot oil n gas companies nowadays do not take Petronas scholars as their interns, nor permanent staff.
Simply because most of them will be called by Petronas and work where ever Petronas "throw" them at, other companies will not want to train a student on behalf of petronas, right?

I have seniors, high scorers in E&E, now working as trader/procurement personnel in Petronas subsidiary, some in marketing, some in HR.
Those lucky one get into oil n gas sector but how many are lucky? Small amount only.

Let say you stayed in HR for 10 years to serve the bond, do you think you can switch back to engineering line by then?

If not mistaken, UTP has risen the tuition fee which mean now 1 year scholarship = 3 years bond.
Fellow UTPians, correct me if I'm wrong.

There's always option to break the bond, pay one lump sum.
I have seniors did that, who get offer from SLB/Baker Hughes.
I rather consider paying back PTPTN by installment than one lump sum to Petronas  tongue.gif
If you holding JPA/MARA scholarship in UTP, then u are safe.  icon_rolleyes.gif

IMO, its always good to take up the scholarship if you have no intention to join oil n gas, if you have intention for it. Think again.
In the company I'm at now, a lot senior engineers told me not to join Petronas in the future, go to other companies. They were from Petronas previously.

If u a non-petronas scholar in UTP, you stand a very high chance to join oil n gas sector.
Check this URL, how many oil n gas companies came to UTP few weeks ago for career fair.
http://www.utp.edu.my/news/TEC2008.php
I'm 'working' in office now, crapster used to do so. You can consult him about the "office" atmosphere as most of them here are offshore people.
Consultant, fabrication, installation, servicing, client, maintenance (integrity management) = Oil n Gas

p/s : Sorry for my messy post.

i agree... dun u think its better to get more experince from other service or oil companies which could offer u wt variety of intense training then sticking wt petronas which is a bit 'relaxing' company? biggrin.gif Also, u rather to be bonded even when there're other companies which could offer u with much higher salary tat enable u to pay back the ptptn in a very short time, perhaps 1-2 years. if u ever go to petronas, dun even think of going to Shell... they are 'enemies'. After u finish ur contract wt petronas, they have the choice of either dumping u, or keeping u, depending on ur performance. By that time, u keep to review ur own capability and what have u learn in petronas before u apply for other company. i dun think there's many companies out there who willing to accept someone who're being dumped, except if u're the one who dump the company. so, think about it properly. i dun say that petronas is not a good company, but i rather said that its a safe option when u've work in other O&G companies for perhaps 10 or 20 years and you're thinking of having a 'calm' life. tongue.gif

thanks christine! I'm confident, I'm just talking about overseas companies in the sense of applying for internship overseas. Anyway, I see your point. You did internship at shell before? Where is that? In Port Dickson? May I know what steps you took to land the gig? Thanks in advance, just trying to learn the ropes here.
*
welcome smile.gif yea, been in shell last year, in miri.... the interview is quite simple, just a phone call interview, with 3 main questions, which are, '' about yourself, apart from academic achievement', 'how would u react with a given situation', and the role of something, for example, jail. The last question is pretty tough, cause you would never expect the kind of question they give u. They like to ask why, how, what etc, the 5 W to make sure whether or not u know what u're talking about... for me, it takes around 1 and a half hour, but guess what, u'll never know it took so long when u have points to say. they always wan listen to long term answer, not the short one.... The internship period took about 10weeks, and honestly, it was great. really unforgetable. WHY? the first reason is the culture. ppl there are really nice, i means those i work with, at least. They are really helpful, warm and trying to help u to adjust with the surrounding. teamwork is the thing that they are emphasizing on. Not selfishness, or backstabbing. Second, they are really serious bout the training. i heard that some companies didnt really care much about the trainings, perhaps becoz they think that interns would mot be able to catch much within the short period, but not for shell. they make sure that u learn as much things as u could. Not only for me, but for other inters in other departments as well. Also, the HR ppl always gather all the interns so that we could mix well and at least have some same-age companions. Manager and co-workers work together in order to breakdown the gap between them. Besides, they have work hard play hard on every 3rd friday of the month. sometimes they'll hold some activities on day, eg: charity work etc. Another reason that makes me enjoy this period so much is because of the ppl i know there, including all the interns from other universities in malaysia, and one from holland, and the staffs there as well. i dunno how to describe it in detail but we just mix so well and there's clique within each ppl in the group. we share each other's experience in our own department, the assignment given and gives opinion in everything we do. short but sweet. We also join the Gawai celebration in June(the celebration of sarawak's bumiputere). One more important thing is to work closely wt ur manager, which will help u a lot if u decide to work wt shell in the future. they are really frank and direct in asking whether u have the interest to work wt them or not. As for me, honestly, i told them that i wan to try out service company first before going back to oil company. the main reason is becos they dun have any vessel, and that the training given by the service company will be far more intense than the oil company like shell. My colleagues there also advice me to try out other companies out there first before going back to shell becoz once u have the experience, u'll be very valuable especially in the huge oil companies. That is for me, a geophysicist laugh.gif however, they have platform etc, so still ok for engineers who want to work offshore... hehe.... that is my experience. wish u all da best and hope that u know what am i talking about... biggrin.gif

P/s: The allowance quite high o~ its rm900, among the highest after schlumberger(rm1000). tongue.gif

Guys, usually how long does it take to know your final interview result? I had my 2nd face to face interview with Shell about a month ago and until today no results has been given.  i was told after the interview it would take around 2 weeks for the final decision.  I've checked my status online and it's still under final assessment. I've called the HR a week ago and they too haven't got any info from the respective dept.

I have received an offer from another company but I've been stalling my answer.  Btw, do they let you know via mail if you're not selected? Thanks!
*
hmm... i admit that Shell's system is a bit slow... perhaps u should check the benefit of the company that offer u first and compare it wt shell's.... i bet u'll be suprised to know the benefits and salary etc of each of companies. also it depends on the HR ppl whether or not they give u any reply on whether u made it or not. Or, pretty hard to say. Anyway, my advise it keep pushing them and check ur status continuously while try to drag the date onconfirming about the offer as long as u could. but of coz, dun mention to the company tat offer you about yourself waiting for another answer from shell.... tongue.gif Good luck..

Thanks for the insight christine. Just one more question, how to apply? I am confused as to the division between East and West Malaysia for Shell application...my friend interned at PD which is WM and when I asked him, he said to apply online through the website but when I visit the website, I get lost in it.

Basically, do I need to choose whether to apply for East or West Malaysia and can apply for both or I just submit one application and they will determine the placement? How did you apply?
*
hmm.... i dont remember much, but of course its better to choose the one nearest to ur hometown. if u're west malaysian, just take west malaysian or otherwise, if u're east malaysian. tell u secret ''actually shell is more keen to take east malaysian nowadays since the reservoir there is quite big, and there's not enough human resource there''. laugh.gif that is the thing that a HR ppl told me.

Thn, the HR Ass. Now waiting for my Final Interview confirmation mail again and they MEAN it the FINAL INTERVIEW......I've a bad day!!!!dun like to be based in office...dull life plus lower salary....Hope i can pass the final interview or is it their excuse to ask me to go for the final interview n later tell me that im failed???really sad and disappointed......

hey, Kevin, dun say that it is a dull life be4 u experience it... Office life is surely different from the land operation life but that does not means that it will be dull or boring. i believe u lknow that they do offer lots of training etc which perhaps will make u too busy to learn new things until no time to think whether or not its boring or dull..... Different companies diff culture. Dont utilise or compare wat u see or experience in sapura crest with schlumberger which u havent even work wt be4. Like what i always said, Experience first be4 u leave any comment. Many ppl out there who have better qualification than u do beg to work wt SLB. SO, stop complaining and be contented wt wat u get, otherwise, yet another chance will slip away like wat u just experiencee. U're just a fresh grad, 5k is already a lot compare to other jobs. I think its better for u to anticipate about wat u will learn and what u could do for the company instead of how much u'll earn or wat the company could give u becoz the experience is the thing that will make u valuable, not the placement or whatever.

pc123, I'm not quite sure how the petronas scholarship (convertable loan) running in UTP. I don't think christine can answer you on that, she's in USM.

As far as I know, when u receive the offer to study in UTP, it comes with the scholarship. So take it or lose both.

Your best bet will be, take the scholarship if you get into UTP, do well in your study.
Pray hard that you don't get recommended by Petronas and they willing to release you for a small amount of fee.

Else, take loan/starting saving now to pay back the loan when you ready to break the bond.

If you joining UTP without petronas scholarship, you still stand a chance to grab JPA/Mara[if u are bumiputra] scholarship which usually unlikely to be bonded.

Think about it after you receive the offer.
If you joining UTP this july, find me while I'm still there tongue.gif
*
yea... Another thing is that if Petronas din give u any posting within 6months, u'll be dropped from their list and u wont need to pay back any money to them... laugh.gif

Hmm, im not saying a better life, but rather, it will be more challenging if u work in other companies first. hey guys i'm just wondering, do o&g companies offer internship or summer job(during academic break) for 1st year students?Currently i'm doing petroleum engineering. Actually a management guy did offer me and my friends summer jobs in Aussie, just wondering would it be better if i finish my 2nd year or is it better to start early?

christine85, thanks for your posting in this topic, really appreciate your feed-back and opinion.

hi there, first of all, welcome, its my pleasure to share my experience and opinions. Bout the internship, i would advice u to go for it. Actually last time when i was shell there's a intern from holland who actually did the internship twice in Malaysia here. i dunno why, but i think its because her dad is in shell, and she could gain more experience and try new things in different department to reveal her interest in oil and gas industry. Today, u're given a chance to start it early, so, i think it will be good for u to try it out. I mean, u can also have it for the second time if u like it after u experience it for the first time. frankly it will be a good thing to be written in ur resume because at least it reflect that u're a kind of person who likes to learn new things. Trust me, though i havent start to work, i believe tat nobody wan to involve in technical thing for the rest of their life. perhaps after 10 or 20 years, many ppl would like to switch to the management side which is less tedious and could earn even more money. Also, u could get a picture for urself of which line tat would make u interested in more. Believe me, ppl with more experience is always more precious than book worm because it could make u look further into the future and ideas given by experienced ppl is always more concrete and useful as well. So, my advice it, start to involve in the society earlier, get the experience, and never stop learning. all da best! laugh.gif

hi there, my direct senior is working in Dugeo. We're of geophysics background as well. Actually the most important thing tip about the interview is to show ur full interest on the company, which was said by my another senior there when he came to our university for recruitment. they dont have any offshore of field operation and only utilizing software for processing. Good company where u'll have chances for training in other countries, eg:Australia. My seniors who work there like the working style which is relaxing, and not tension and even think of working in Australia there permanently. hence, when they interview u, try to ask as many question as u could to show that u're interested wt them.. haha.. good luck laugh.gif

How to apply for a petronas internship? i've looked through their website but I can't find a link to apply online
*
Halo~ actually Petronas does not provide internship for students anymore except for their scholars. SO, its better if u try out other companies.. happy.gif

petronas does provide internship to non scholars.... i hv few friends get the internship offer eventot they are not frm UTP... they said they apply tru internet, but i doubt.... i think they use backdoor to secure a place in petronas....
U can try petronas penapisan melaka if u r frm malacca...  every year they will take few student frm Public University, i got few coursemate and junior get the offer frm them, but all frm malacca....

but why u wana apply petronas? they dont hv proper training programme for internship students, u may end up doing some tiny tiny thing..... or read the manual everyday.....
I got one friend did his internship in Shell Global Solution, Marvelous experience...  they never treat u like trainee, he hv to design reactor on his own, do presentation to stackholder, and even got chance to fly to german for few days meeting.....
I guess Christine can tell u more coz she did her internship at shell rite?
*
actually there are students who are not from UTP but also are Petronas scholar, so, those ppl stand the chance to have internship there. U're sure that ur from is not a Petronas scholar? hmm.gif weird.... recruiter from petronas last year told us that they dun wan any non-scholar students anymore for internship. Maybe change their mind again.... laugh.gif
Yea, i did my internship in Shell... only one word can describe it. FANTASTIC! especially when i compare it to other companies. Last time they gave me a project on seismic processing. they assign me a mentor who taught me how to use the software. Colleague there also very nice cox they will help u whenever u need them. they emphasize on teamwork a lot. Because i was also interacting with other interns from different department, i seen and understand that they also learned a lot of things, or should i say, too much to be compare to other companies. u'll get involve in their meeting, courses etc, which makes u feel like you're also a part of them. So it will be better if backspace go for other companies like shell, exxon, slb etc to get more precious experience. ciao~

nope, my friend is not a petronas scholar,he taking ptptn.... one of them said he ask someone working in petronas to help him get the internship... if u wana get a permanent job in petronas without network, for non-bumi and non scholar... the chances are less than 1%
...different story if u hv recommendation letter, can straight enter without any interview.... that why some of the petronas staff ask me to pakat with those petronas head  thumbup.gif ...
But, their yearly increment only around 7-9% which is very low compare to other operator, bonus around 4-6 months.... so, i guess better stay at my current company first, hahhaha
*
o.... i see.... yea.... Good network is more important than the capability in Petronas... haha.... really pathetic..... sweat.gif

I`m starting stpm now,it`s hard n suffering..n i hope my 6years(2 stpm+ 4 deagree) will affect my salary later on in life..
1). I wish to ask wat course you guys took b4 ending up in petrol type work in OnG companies. Chem engineering is 1 rite?mechanical? wat bout chemical n biomolecula engineer? any other? petrol enginner is the straightest 1 bt i`m afraid we might face oil problems later on..might as well major in sumting on both petrol n non-petrol.
2). Neglect my interests(i mean i hav), any idea how much a freshie tat works in OnG earns? Lets say..offshore n office jobs..i heard ppl who work offshores in MIri earns only 2k while sum may get >5k as a freshie eventho he`s workin in the office..wat r the reasons behind this? I`m kinda $.$ face..let salary talks now..
3). I`m oso interested in stuying in S`pore(NUS/NTU) nex time, just asking, is there any OnG indutries there? i noe nth bout sg! wats the job prospect in sg(jobs related to oil)? Second plan---> local univ...by ranking for the course i wanted(chem engineer) shud be like this rite?  USM>UTM>UTP....
i need advice bout my future...sry for messy post n thz in advance...
*
LEt me add some more..
1) Geophysics. There is only one university tat offer this course in malaysia, USM and for every batch, there is only around 30 students, hence, u could see how big our market is. Also, geophysics are very demanded as these ppl are responsible in detecting the precise location of oil. Dont worry bout the oil problem, it's too early to think bout tat. there is only around 30-40% of oil&Gas being dig out from most of the reservoirs. SO, u can imagine, there's still a lot of oil, plus the discovery of giant reservoir lately.
2) Salary depends on the company but i could assure u something. For most of the O&G companies, the geophysics' salary is the same as engineer's. High salary for geophysicist because they are scientist, and usually we call them geoscientist. Eg: schlumberger, basic salary for fresh geophysicist=5K, Shell: basic salary+allowance=also 5k. others are 2-3k for basic salary, plus allowance some more.
3) I dont think that u need to waste so much money in private college etc. If u could, gettin' into local university is really not bad either. Think twice, is it wise for u to waste more money just to earn the same amount of money as the local uni students? Also, some companies, for example exxon mobil takes degree holders from local students while for oversea students, they are pretty much prefer the master students. Im malaysia, experience is more important than education level. U know why? because not all the things u learn in uni is used in ur future job. Hence, u'll need to learn new things when join the company.

Geophysicist also got lots of chances to travel around just like the engineer. Eg:Fresh geophysicist will be going to Abu dhabi with the engineers for 6days to attend the introductory trainings. If everything is alright, then the next destination of training will be in Houstan, texas. Engineering course is very good, but somehow, geophysics' market is bigger due to the low production of students every year. That is a course tat not many ppl know. Cheers~ smile.gif

1) If u r worry bout the oil and gas retrenchment because of oil shortage (which i think wont happen so soon)... then u can choose Chemical eng major in Process Engineering... but this is more to downstream or processing plant, for upstream drilling activity, mechanical is better....

2)Salary for freshie in oil and gas could vary frm rm2400- rm3500 depend on ur job scope and company backgroud...

for process/project/graduate engineer
Technip is rm2400
Petronas rm2500
Shell rm3500
contractor/vendor rm2200-2400
I am not 100% sure bout this salary range, just for ur reference....
I dont think STPM will gv u any advantage for u to enter Oil and gas MNC, STPM was one of the hardest and recognized exam in the world, but not anymore...
*
I was a STPM student. Its true that STPM would not give any advantage to enter O&G company but in fact, it helps u to strengthen ur academy foundation when u enter university. most of the things u study in STPM is relevent to wat is studied in university. I dont think that it is hard, provided tat u're consistence in ur study.ANd let me correct sth.... The basic salary for Shell's engineer is actually around 2.7k, but high housing allowance etc which makes the total salary to be around 5k.

yeah, enthusiastic is good, but we'll see what you say about working for SLB after 3 years wink.gif

Haha... who said that im going to work for SLB for the rest of my life? This company is a stepping stone for the bigger planning in the future. Working for ppl is not my only option, there are lot more things to do outside, eg: business. i never think of working for ppl for the rest of my life. tongue.gif. Also, how bad do u think it will be for me when im work in office? Im not an engineers, but a geophysicist who deal with nothing but data. biggrin.gif

i asked my senior and she said that SLB is short term, fast cash .. people leave after 5-7 years  and less benefit ..
and she said shell is long term, career until retirement .. but basic for freshie not as good  lor ..

But yet another friend told me tht shell has alot alot of people, so theres a high chance you get ignored when working with them as a freshie

anyone can comment ?
*
i have 2 seniors in Shell. What they adviced me is, go try out few years wt service companies, get the experience, get the high salary, then come back to Shell to get more benefits! laugh.gif Another employee from Pakistan told me tat 30 years in Shell is too long. Not worth it. ALso, service companies provide more intense training than the OIL companies do. U need to dig a lot of things on ur own in oil companies. But of course more benefits from OIL companies, eg: exxon, Petronas and Shell. Talking bout being ignore, its not true. Ppl in Shell work in team. They help each other to achieve higher quality outcomes. But of course, maybe it would differ a bit when we magnify it into different departments. tongue.gif But form wat i see last time when im doing internship in Shell, they took a great care about the things that i learned even though im only an intern, not to mention the among the colleagues~

Christine, i'm office based too, Production Engineer. btw, never mentioned that you'd be at SLB the whole of your working life, just saying that you will get jaded working here.

SLB as a stepping stone is very good, although jumping to another Company after WG is a little tough. You're going to be doing what at WG? DP? Then your outlook is a little bleak though, although Jason has a presence here.

LOL! we'll see how it goes when you actually join! Look me up, I'm in Rohas as well, though at the towers most of the time.

---
allenultra, I know that Christine isn't going to the field, but there are challenges to desk jobs as well! smile.gif although kalau betul DP, biasa je kot.
*
Haha... yea... i know, seen those situation in Shell as well, exhaused, tired sick etc. I'll be working in the processing team, along with my 3 other coursemates. See u there when there's a chance. btw, what do u mean by ''your outlook is a little bleak''?

Thz for the advises..yeah i agree many ppl aren`t aware of geophysics yet..dats realy an advantage..hey, wat actually does a geophysics do? other than searching for resevoirs and data stuffs..do they get to work upstream? or just on land in office?

1 conclusion bout salaries..it usually depends on the candidates abilities and how good the company is right? theres no telling tat a person frm office job(a bit easy but dull) could earn higher than a person frm offshore(tiring n hard)..true? I still hope i could achieve 5k as freshie..

Christine..
3) I dont think that u need to waste so much money in private college etc. If u could, gettin' into local university is really not bad either. -->yeah agree! its mor advisable do local degrees if u wana work locally..unless u plan to work outside m`sia, lets say s`pore ,then its better to get a degree frm their univ...correct?
Christine u work in an office? tell me bout the life of geophysics in an office..i`m mor interested in working in an office environment rather than the offshore..

welcome~ laugh.gif Geophysics work is related to find anything under the ground. Besides looking for oil, we can work in the mining company as well, as long as to find any related things the company want. Besides, because what we study about is mostly on the seismic wave, we can involve in jobs that are related to earthquake, tsunami etc for other countries. We're mainly concentrating on inspecting the underground condition by using different geophysical method such as gravity, electromagnatic, seismic etc, which consume lower cost compare to engineering method such as boring. That is why geophysical method is so demanded. and Yea, geophysical's jod also ranges from technical to management stuff. They are either based in office, marine, or land operation. All these 3 options have their own advantages, depending on the demand of the individuals. geophysicist can be divided into 3kinds as well, data aquisition, processing and interpretation. Data aquisition is mainly on acquiring the data from the site, modelling the reservoir etc, processing is on QC the data, to increase its quality for better interpretation. Interpretation is on interpreting the precise location of oil, the quantity etc. Hence, we need to deal with the data by using software.

Salary. Yea, depending on the company and the capability of a person to upgrade hinself. Salary of office based is not much different from that of offshore-based in term of digit and number. The main different is that offshore-based salary is count in US dollar... while for home country office-based, the salary is in malaysia ringgit.... haha... now u know y.... But if u're based in other country's office, then ur salary will be very high also... Tell u sth.... it wont be very hard for geophysicist to work in offshore. Like what i said, we deal wt data. For example, for data-processing, all we need to do is to sit in the room and deal with data, but those hard work will usually be done by engineers. Hence, engineers are really tough and impressive.

Haha, even if u wan to work in other countries, u dun have to go to oversea's college as well. My senior is working in Dugeo. She's trained in Australia and i heard that she'll soon be based in australia as well. Ha ha... Many malaysian working in spore nowadays even though they are not graduates from spore.. I would say tat highly demanded geophysicist are those with vast experiences. With experience, u'll be valuable, and many companies will start to dig and look for you with attractive benefits and $$, as said by my great great senior who has been working in exxon mobil for 27years. laugh.gif

Office life... Not as dull as ppl say. y? Because u'll face a lot of challenges when dealing with the data. Small mistake might lead to big problems... Office environment is depending on the company as well. I havent start to work wt slb but i can share wt u some experience when in doing internship in shell. Office life is really depending on the ppl working there, the culture. In shell, teamwork is very important, hence, makes the relationship between every colleague very good. Communicating openly, making jokes when free, and some even bring food to share. Some of the data processing step will consume a lot of time which need u to leave the computer there to finish the job before proceeding to another step. That is the time when u begin to see ppl walking around, joking, having tea, some titbits, going back to fetch kids and come back again to do the final touch of the day. It can be tedious also sometimes when u couldnt get the good result and need to do the correction over and over again. Seems to be scary huh? smile.gif But something important, i saw the joy on the face when they got good result, satisfaction on the things they do. I dunno where the energy come from but i saw a colleague who work day and night in the office, sleeping only 4hours a day to finish the job and dun even wan to waste a minute to rest even when the manager told her to take some break. Haha....Sometimes u need to attend meeting, presenting the result, going for courses in both local and oversea etc. Maybe it will be bored sometimes, busy sometimes, tiring sometimes but if to compare, what other jobs outside that can make u earn more money with little effort? haha... there is but not many... not matter what path are u going to take in the future, i wish u all da best... laugh.gif

Nicole, here`s sth bout O&G benifits:
--very good argument rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif
In any conditions, after years of xperience, cnt yur hubby simply juz shift to the management side/consultation,office jobs? Sinz u said yur hubby is in offshore n tat it`s abit tiring and being away for too long(soaked iwth sweat, intense heat frm Sun,etc etc...long rotation periods)

christine, yur gona work in an office rite? can brief me a lit mor on the office life lik wat u seen in the shell internhsip? so, shud b mor relaxing rite? nothing much dif like other office jobs? --work in morning, lunch wit collegues, back home at evening, then dinner with loved ones,shop/clubs..etc etc? btw, r u working in malaysia or outside the mainland? is there a department in penang?lol.. then hows the upgrade of salary thing is done? evry year got automatic salary increment? at the age of 25(assume grad at 25), earns 5k at slb.. How bout salary for office jobs offered by other companies--shell,petro,etc...
*
smile.gif thanks for the compliment. hmm... if u look back on my previous posts, i've mentioned about the office life be4. Yea, the office life in O&G companies is pretty much the same as in other companies. there are times when u'll be really really busy, especially when u're required to pass up a report in the given time frame and there are also times when u;ll be really free, ie when you finish your assignment. However you still can do the routine with your loved ones anytime u want especially when u're working in O&G companies as most of the O&G companies allow you to access their system at home. i'm based in malaysia, and i dont think there's any office in penang. About the salary increment, it is usually given to those who have more experiences and for certain companies, passing exams are required. For slb, i heard the recruiter said that exam will be held every year. Hence, u'll get a chance to upgrade urself once a year. Im not sure about automatic increment. for other companies, the salary is approximately:
Dugeo:2.5K, i think got plus allowance
Shell: 2.7k, plus allowance which makes the total=5k
Petronas: 2.6k, i dunno got plus allowance or not but bonus quite high depending on the performance.
Talisman: 3k, plus some allowance
CGG&Veritas: ~2.5k also...
some companies give allowance and some dont...
